For future generations, facing competitive
challenges will be the norm. Consequently,
the 21st century learning methods are
more inclined to cultivate the full range of
children’s ability, as proven by the strong
promotion of Higher Order Thinking Skills
(HOTS) by Ministries of Education worldwide,
including Malaysia.
HOTS is a concept of educational reform
based on learning taxonomies such as
Bloom’s Taxonomy. It is the ability to apply
knowledge, skills and values for reasoning
and reflection to solve problems, make
decisions, innovate and also to strive to
create something.
Traditional rote learning methods are no
longer sufficient to develop future creative
problem solvers. It may be helpful in
developing children’s basic calculation skills
but not in developing their HOTS! Most
employers are seeking for effective problem
solvers rather than just merely looking at a
candidate’s past academic performance.
Cultivating the combination of critical
and creative problem solving skills and a
growth mindset will enable a student to
be an all-rounded thinker, ready to take
on the challenges of the future.
