14 | January 17, 2019 | The Northbrook tower news northbrooktower.com D28 students prove math skills in national contest Submitted by District 28 It’s one thing to be good at math, it’s another to prove yourself in a national competition and score among the top 1 percent of your grade. That’s exactly what happened for eighthgrader John Raub Jr. when he joined 26 other District 28 students in the American Mathematics Competition 8, a 25-question, 40-minute exam competition. In fact, this year’s results also netted the highest three-person score for the district since students started participating five years ago, according to Becky Heller, the Gifted and Talented Coordinator who organizes the event. The first 10 questions on the AMC 8 “are a breeze,” Raub Jr. said, then, “it gets harder and harder.” He began taking the test in fifth grade and has participated each year to see how much his knowledge District 28 students (left to right) John Raub Jr., Jeehyung Yoo and Oliva Zhao had the top three scores in Northbrook Junior High on the American Mathematics Competition 8 to combine for a school best. John scored in the top 1 percent in the nation, and Jeehyung and Olivia scored in the top 5 percent nationally. Photo Submitted has grown. His score this year was 20 out of 25. “Math is the one thing that I’m good at. I’m proud of myself for doing so well,” Raub Jr. said. Not only is he measuring his knowledge, he must also be sharing it with his little brother Josh, who participated for the first time this year and earned the top score in the fifth/ sixth-grade level. Seventh-graders Jeehyung Yoo and Olivia Zhao placed second and third at the seventh-eighthgrade level, scoring in the top 5 percent nationally. Please see d28, 17 Longtime Northbrook firefighter honored following retirement Chris Pullam Freelance Reporter Village Trustees recognized retired Northbrook firefighter Driver Fred Korf after nearly 29 years of service to the village at their regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8. Before coming to Northbrook, Korf spent four years in the U.S. Air Force as a security specialist, attaining the rank of sergeant, and served as a firefighter EMT with the Houston, Texas Fire Department for seven years. Korf served Northbrook as a firefighter paramedic and then became an engineer driver in August of 1988. He retired Dec. 15 after 28 years and 11 months with the Northbrook Fire Department. Korf was a certified Firefighter 3, fire apparatus engineer and a fire service vehicle operator. He was also certified in hazardous materials operations and had many letters of appreciation and recognition in his file. Korf worked diligently on the department’s prefire site plans for eight years and was on the Foreign Fire Insurance Board for 15 years — 12 as president. He also ran the Wayne Luecht Memorial Fund Golf Outing for eight years, raising thousands of dollars for the church and the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance Burn Camp. “Firefighter Engineer Korf will be missed,” read the board packet. “The Village Board and staff wish him all the best in his retirement and future endeavors. … On behalf of the Village of Northbrook, the Northbrook Fire Department and the greater Northbrook Community, we offer our thanks and appreciation to [Fred] for the nearly 29 years you so proudly served this community. Congratulations and may our retirement years be as long and fulfilling as you so richly deserve.”
