6 | January 17, 2019 | The Northbrook tower news northbrooktower.com From Jan. 12 State trooper fatally struck on I-294 in Northbrook Staff Report An Illinois state trooper was fatally struck by a vehicle at approximately 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, while investigating a traffic crash on I-294 in Northbrook, according to a statement from Illinois State Police. The trooper was identified late Saturday night as 34-year-old Highland Park resident Chris Lambert. Lambert had been a state trooper for five years, according to state police. State police said the crash was a three-car, incident that was likely weather-related. Lambert was struck while standing outside of his car. Lambert sustained serious injuries and was given CPR by an off-duty nurse, per police. The crash occurred on northbound I-294 near Willow Road in the left lane as Lambert was investigating the crash on the interstate. Lambert was then transported to Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview. He was pronounced dead at 7:19 p.m, according to official records from the Lake County Medical Examiner’s office. “Trooper Lambert was a great trooper and was respected by those within and from outside the ISP, this is a tremendous loss which could have been prevented and should have never happened,” Illinois State Police Director Leo P. Schmitz says in a statement released late Saturday night. “Trooper Lambert deliberately placed his vehicle in a position to protect the lives of the victims of the previous crash, and took on the danger himself. He will be remembered for his dedication to the Illinois State Police and for giving the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve the citizens of Illinois.” Lambert, was a prior member of the U.S. Army, who was married, with a 1-year-old daughter. In a press conference held Jan. 12, Schmitz said Lambert was on the way home and not on duty. “We lost one of our own — we lost one of our best,” Schmitz said at the press conference. “Everybody loved him.” As of publication time, Lambert’s visitation and funeral arrangements are pending. Police Reports Northbrook residence burglarized; several rooms ‘disturbed’ Northbrook police officers were dispatched to a residential burglar alarm at 5:39 p.m. on Jan. 3 in the 2000 block of Mallard Drive. In other police news: Jan. 10 • A complainant advised that on Jan. 7, 2019, his human resource supervisor received a suspicious email from his email account asking to move his direct deposits to a different bank account. The complainant did not send the email. Jan. 8 • John G. Boyer, 60, of Medinah, was charged with theft (felony count) at 3 p.m. in the 300 block of Anthony Trail. Northbrook detectives conducted a follow-up investigation into a theft case, which was initially reported in 2018. The investigation led detectives to Boyer, who was found to have been writing checks to himself fraudulently. He was processed on a felony charge after approval from the Cook County States Attorney’s office. Jan. 7 • Babatope I. Babafemi, 25, of Chicago, was charged with driving with a suspended license and expired registration at 11:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of Dundee. • A complainant reported unknown subject(s) used their credit cards to make unauthorized purchases. Jan. 6 • Kristin Kuhn, 25, of Prospect heights, was charged with driving while under the influence at 3:04 a.m. near the intersection of Techny and Lavigne. Jan. 5 • A complainant reported they observed three females and two male subjects remove bottles of liquor from the CVS store, located in the 900 block of Willow Road, at 5:29 p.m. without paying for them. • Andrew M. Russell, 26, of Northbrook, was charged with driving while under the influence and improper lane usage at 5:05 p.m. near the intersection of Dundee and Sanders. Jan. 4 • Bonifcio Baltazar, 43, of Chicago, was charged with improper lane usage and driving with a revoked driver’s license at 10:57 p.m. near the intersection of Dundee and Skokie Boulevard. • A resident of the 600 block of Dunsten reportedly found the rear sliding door of their residence partially open and slightly damaged at 3:15 p.m. The resident does not believe that entry into the residence was made. Hass, 71, of Northbrook, died Monday, Jan. 7, at a ski resort in Breckenridge, Colo., according to Summit County Coroner Regan Wood. Hass was found unconscious on a ski run at the resort during the early afternoon. He was pronounced dead at 1:38 p.m., per Wood. In a statement emailed to The Tower, Wood said the manner of Hass’ death was natural, and related to severe coronary artery disease. Wood confirmed that it appears Hass did not crash into anything while skiing.
