Statistics from the CDC showthat morethan one in three Americans
(84 millionpeople) has prediabetes –acondition in which aperson’s
bloodglucose is elevated, but not yethigh enough foradiabetes
it. However, with awareness and proactivechanges in behavior, people
with prediabetesmay prevent the onset of type 2diabetes.
10 %
of those with prediabetes
knowtheyhaveit.
To combatthis epidemic on alocal level, the North Suburban YMCA
will launch anew Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) in February. This
comprehensiveeducational program, designed foradults who areat
risk or havebeendiagnosed with prediabetes, encourages healthy
eating and physical activity in asupportive, small-group setting.
Alreadyimplemented at YMCAs across the country, the CDC-endorsed
curriculum has been shown to help participants achieve significant
weight loss and increased activity.DPP runs forone year and is often
coveredbyinsurance.
“Weare very excited to introduce the Y’s Diabetes Prevention
Program to our community,” says Megan Vazquez, NSYMCA Senior
Director of Wellness. “Prediabetes and type 2diabetes takeaterrible
toll on individuals, families, and the health caresystem overall. We
want to givepeople the tools to understand their risk and takesteps
that will help them avoid the disease.”
Financial assistance may be available to those who qualify thanks to
agenerous grant from the estate of John C. Wood, afounder &past
