Rebora’s legacy continues through competition
Michal Dwojak
Sports Editor
Mark Rebora left his
impact on the Glenbrook
North community in many
different ways, and the
Spartans made sure to continue
one of his beloved
traditions.
The former GBN coach
and educator, who died of
a heart attack last March,
always looked for different
ways to make exercise
fun for not only himself,
but also his students. So six
years ago, he built off of the
triathlon the school already
had and helped incorporate
a new challenge for physical
education students at
the school, one that focuses
on the CrossFit trend and
challenges students.
“It evolved into something
we wanted to keep
going and wanted to honor
him directly,” GBN coach
and teacher Justin Weiner
said. “This was something
he wanted to do.”
GBN students — and
even some teachers — took
on the challenge in what
became known as the first
Mark Rebora Spartan Challenge
in the school’s fieldhouse
on Jan. 9-10.
The workout involved
nine different exercises that
needed to be done in 25
minutes. Every PE student
went through the challenge
of the test, while also remembering
Rebora’s impact.
There is no official competition
with a winner, but
Weiner and the other teachers
hope to grow the challenge
a little more as the
competition continues in
the years to come.
Rebora came to GBN in
1992 as a physical education
teacher by GBN. He
was also named head coach
of the winter wrestling
team, a position he held
through 2013.
Many Spartan students
felt Rebora’s impact during
his time at the school,
and Weiner was one who
felt it both as a student
and coworker. According
to Weiner, there was never
a doubt that the challenge
would continue.
“We just want to take the
messages he gave to students
each and every day
and continue to do that for
as long as his legacy lives
on, which will be forever,
as long as we do things like
this.”
The challenge is also
a good way for students
who never knew Rebora
to learn about his impact.
The current freshman class
never had him as a coach or
teacher, so for those who
were close to him like former
football head coach
and current teacher Bob
Pieper, it’s a good way to
teach students about his
impact, while also remembering
a good friend.
“We get to explain who
he was,” Pieper said. “So
I think it’s good for us, we
get to talk about him, we
get to talk about the influence
he had at the school,
all the lives he touched.”
He will continue to
touch the lives of the Spartan
community for years
to come. The event was
important to Rebora, and
coaches and teachers hope
his legacy will continue as
the competition continues
to grow each year.
“Anything with fitness
is a good way to remember
Mark Rebora,” Pieper said.
“There’s no better way to
remember him and honor
him than fitness.”
