We adopted him a year ago on Dec. 16, 2017 from PAWS and he has been a spunky addition to our family. Spark loves to talk to us and is always howling and making noises to try and communicate. He also loves going to the Northbrook Dog Park where he has tons of friends. Obsessing over squirrels he sees out the window is another favorite past time. He loves to hide his toys around the house and just learned how to shake hands when given the command “paw”. Northbrook Village Board Glenview Blaze eyes Northbrook for new training facility Chris Pullam Freelance Reporter Glenview baseball could be coming to Northbrook — at least, for practice. During the Northbrook Village Board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8, trustees considered a preliminary application by Glenview Blaze Baseball to lease a vacant 4,200 square-foot space at 1880 Holste Road for use as an indoor training facility. The space is part of a 43,723-square-foot property zoned as an ICS Industrial and Commercial Services District. It’s located on the north side of Holste Road, approximately 500 feet east of Shermer Road, and has 39 parking stalls. Glenview Blaze Baseball is a not-for-profit organization teaching competitive baseball to children ages 10–14. The facility would be used for pre-season training (November through March) and baseball playing season practice (April through July), primarily in the evenings and some weekend hours. The organization has a total of seven, 12-person teams of 12 players each maintained and trained by the organization, but there wouldn’t be more than eight players and three instructors in the facility at any given time. The maximum occupancy is 11. As proposed, the typical hours of operation would be 10 a.m.–10 p.m., seven days a week. There is no outdoor activity proposed for this use, and no exterior changes would be made to the building or the site. Indoor space would be remodeled to accommodate the proposed use and a building permit would be required. The drop-off and pickup policy for the facility is to have the parents/guardians escort the children in and out of the facility. None of the trustees voiced any concerns with the use. However, the issue still needs to make its way through the village’s zoning process, which may include a public hearing and recommendation from the Northbrook Plan Commission. Green Resident Award to recognize eco-friendly households Eco-friendly households in Northbrook will finally receive their due. Applications are due by the end of February, and the Environmental Quality Commission, which created the award after a referral from Village President Sandra Frum, will select the winner. The winner will be announced at an April board meeting to coincide with the Village’s annual Earth Day/Arbor Day celebration. According to Trustee Robert Israel, the Village wanted to create a program where resident “can come forward and highlight their activities in a green and sustainable manner to [us] and then we can make noise on their behalf to promote these activities to others within the village in the hopes that others might take up those practices and extend those practices.” To qualify, applicants must be located within the corporate limits of the Village of Northbrook.
