Kia Ora, Happy New Year and a very, warm welcome to 2019!
Before I start looking ahead to the New Year ahead, I just want to take a little time
to reflect back on the happenings of an extremely busy and action packed
December as we celebrated the end of yet another year.
Earlier in the month, we had the very popular Old Timers Day and whilst the
numbers were slightly down from last year, I received great feedback from those
who attended, with many really enjoying the entertainment provided. (Sorry to say
that wasn’t you, Andy)
The Family Gala day was a massive success. We had a huge turnout of families,
heaps of children that just had a ball with the pony rides, bouncy castle, face
painting, plus entertainment from Sports Suzie, the hugely popular Princess Bonita
and of course the visit from the big man himself, Santa aka Shaun.
The day went without a hitch which resulted in fabulous feedback from the
attendees; young and old. It would not have been the success that it was without
the big volunteer contingent lead by Andy Chivers, Colin Tupuhi, and their fellow
Board members. Tim, Ella and Amy, who perfectly complemented our brilliant staff,
and of course a team of very passionate club members who so generously gave
their time on the day. I personally want to thank each and every one of you that
was involved; I can tell you it made me very proud as your President.
Then to round off the success of the day, we had Christmas Carols performed by
the Canterbury Brass Band. They were superb and if you didn’t get along to hear
them, I would truly recommend you put it on the radar for next year.
Christmas Day at the club was a sell-out, creating a very special day of festive celebrations
and of course camaraderie. Accordingly, my thanks go to the staff in acknowledgment
for the sacrifices they made to ensure this day was such a special
one for everyone that attended.
NEW $10 LUNCH MENU!
OUT NOW!
The last 3 months of the year have been very hectic, and very financially viable for
the Clubs’ survival.
To carry on this momentum into the New Year, Board member Michael Backhurst is
leading a strategy focus group which is tasked to come up with fresh, new ideas and
initiatives to boost our Clubs’ performance in the quieter months of the year.
Should you wish to contribute to this important project, please do not hesitate to
share your thoughts with Michael, Tim or any of your Board members. Any idea, no
matter how big or small will be passed to the Strategy Focus Group for consideration.
There is an old saying, “many hands make light work” or in our case, “many ideas will
make the Club prosper!”
On a personal note, my New Year begins with a change of job; I have taken up a
position as a cargo handler at the Lyttelton Port Company. Ironically, I will be working
at the very institution which was a catalyst to the birth of the Woolston Club!
Looking ahead, 2019 has many exciting activities, events and international
tournaments to look forward too. Liz and I would like to take this opportunity to wish
all of our members and their families a positively happy, healthy and prosperous new
year!

Retro Roast, Wednesday Quiz Night & Vege
Bingo will be taking a break and will return
on the 23rd January!
Happy New Year to all,
I hope that everyone had a great Christmas and New Year, with some time to relax and
spend with family and friends.
December was a busy month with a number of external functions and I would like to
thank all the staff for their hard work and commitment to giving these guests a great
time.
Once again, it was terrific to see so many of our regular patrons and some new faces in
the Club over the festive season, and we had a great time celebrating with all from Old
Timers Day, Family Gala Day, Xmas Day luncheon to bringing in the New Year.
I’d would really like to thank each and every one of the staff that provided their services
for our guests on Christmas Day. It definitely would not have been possible without you
so thank you for making this year’s Christmas Lunch a huge success once again.
2019 promises to be another exciting and challenging year.
This year, we have some fantastic entertainment lined up for you: 80’s Throwback
Show, OZ to NZ Country Music Dinner Show and Amy & Adele Songbook to name a few.
The entertainment committee is working hard to provide some quality live music and
events this year to show case the great venue we have here. We will also see the return
of some of our much-loved annual events such as Pink Ribbon Quiz so make sure to
keep an eye out on our events calendar for details.
All areas of the Club including the food and beverage offers will be reviewed and
fine-tuned to ensure that they attract current members and new members back in on a
more regular basis, while still looking after our already very loyal members who are the
back bone of the Club on a day to day basis. We will revisit menus, wine lists,
promotions and entertainment and all areas of the business so that we keep our
services current, fresh, relevant and fun.
QUOITS SECTION:
The Quoits section had their Christmas breakup
meal in the Club restaurant on Friday 14th
December. What a wonderful evening it turned out
to be. There were 26 of us dining and not one
negative word was heard about our lovely meals.
Many thanks to all the staff on the night.
On Saturday, we played our last game for the year,
playing the Papanui triples. Richmond ran the event
on the day and it was lovely to have players from
Ashburton there too. Thanks to Richmond for the food they organised
from our restaurant, again it was great.
The weather was awesome, wonderful conditions for quoits. The
Woolston team took the trophy; they were good enough on the day.
Congratulations ending the year on a win!
We weren't good enough the week before to obtain the Gray Shield from
Richmond, but another enjoyable day was had by all. Congratulations to them too.
We were outside on Gala Day demonstrating our game, some of the people who tried had a
natural ability which was good to see. They also discovered it's not as easy to play as it looks.
We also had raffles which proved very popular with 7 or 8 draws for each ticket and the winners
getting pick of the table, but the most popular of our stalls was the lucky dips for the children.
There seemed to be way more people than last year so we could have sold twice as many lucky
dips. Next year we'll have more. The Gala Day was a lot of fun for young and old alike. The Club
and all the board, helpers and entertainers did a wonderful job. To also have the Brass Band
again just topped off the day. It felt like Christmas was nearly here.
We'd like to thank Ella for reminding us monthly to get our stuff in, what a good job she is doing
with the newsletters.
Merry Christmas to everyone!
What a fantastic afternoon on Sunday for our annual
Family Gala Day! Great turnout, and fun for the whole
family!!
Thank you to all our staff, volunteers and sections who
helped make the day a success!
Thanks to our entertainers & activities
