Kia Ora and welcome,
As we head into spring, many of the winter based sectional
activities are drawing to a close.
Our card section almost trumped the majority of clubs in New
Zealand by earning the runner-up spot in the National teams
aggregate at the ClubsNZ tournament recently held in Blenheim.
Their silver medal performance was an outstanding
achievement and is covered in more depth later in this publication.
Congratulations again to one of our associate members,
Linwood Rugby League, on winning the Canterbury RL
Premiership competition for a record fourth consecutive
season, this was last achieved in the 1970s!
Celebrations went late into the night to mark this wonderful
achievement!
The one thing with that is not as visible when celebrating this success is the work that goes on
in the background, probably from early January in putting the building blocks in place to make
this success come to fruition. On that note I would like to highlight the work of the Footy
club’s President, Hanna Kakoi, a busy working mum with a young family. The stuff you do in
the background goes predominantly unseen, however we do want to acknowledge your input
and trust you will have a well deserved break.
While speaking of unsung heroes, I would also like to acknowledge the huge work load of one
of our boxing sections leaders, Holly Sullivan.
Holly has a great team around her in providing boxing opportunities for our youth, potential
stars of the future, and it is her passion, drive and organisational skills that make this happen.
Thank you Holly!
September sees the clubs of Canterbury Race day out at the Methven trots. We have a bus
load of members heading down for a day out. I believe there may still be a few seats available,
so get in quick for a fun day out, first in best dressed!
Enjoy the lovely daffodils and longer days ahead!
Hi to all,
Just when you think the season has changed, Winter pops back with a little sting in
the tail. We can’t be far away though as the front gardens are starting to show
plenty of new growth, daffodils are out, the gardeners have even been getting closer
to mowing the front lawns but the wet weather forecast this week might put this
back.
So with the change of season around the corner Amy, Steph and their teams have
taken the opportunity to freshen up the restaurant and bar food menus, weekly
rituals and promotions and you will see these roll out across the month of
September with some great deals and the return of some old favourites.
On there way are several great value food & drinks rituals, steak, ribs and pizza
deals. Kids eat free on Fridays (T&C apply). Good food at a great price, so spread the
word to fellow members, neighbours, family and friends. We really appreciate your
continued support in the bar and restaurant. The two course “roast buffet”
continues on a Sunday evening.
Whitford’s bar will see a seasonal “Spring Fling” cocktail promotion commence with
some traditional classics at great value pricing to put a spring in your step. New wine
menu, bar games and a wider range of beverage products to showcase local
producers will be introduced.
Congratulations to Linwood Rugby League, the senior men’s side is back to back
champions now four years in a row and the reserves also won their Grand Final,
awesome results. Cashmere Technical also had a stellar season and compete in the
English Cup final this Saturday 7th, well done. Cricket will be back out on Garrick
Park from the beginning of October, welcome back.
The Rugby World Cup commences in a couple of weeks, can the AB’s make it a three
in a row?! We have booked the Sky package which means we will be able to show all
matches live, although the timings of some matches won’t suit the New Zealand
audience. There are Heineken promotions, food & beverage details, TAB vouchers to
be won so keep an eye on the noticeboards for all the details including which
matches are on when. Go the All Blacks!
The “Vague as Brothers” and “The Bottlejacks” headline the entertainment
schedule during the month, always crowd favourites. Put it in your diary.
Catch up during the month.
Regards, Tim.

both the travelling and aggregate trophies for the Club.
Thanks must also go out to our regular players and the Cards committee. Cards are fun and
FISHING SECTION:
The season kicks off in October for the start of the trout season. A reminder that
Take a Kid fishing is on at The Groynes on Sunday October 20 with a 9am start..
There will be plenty of keen fishing people there to offer advice and prizes available
for the kids.. age limit is up to 12 yrs old.
Recently we had a night out to celebrate some birthdays amongst us and it was
deemed a good night by all. We feel we are getting just a wee bit older as some of
us are getting the grandchildren joining the section and that has 2 ways of looking
at it..we ARE getting older or it's safe to say the Fishing Section will continue with
the younger members coming on board. Roll on October so we can get out and
challenge our skills once again, and there’s a trip to Otematata to plan for in
November.
QUOITS SECTION:
Quoits has started again for the season. We had the Open day for the Richmond
Quoits section at Woolston on Saturday 24th August. We couldn't
have asked for a better day weather wise to play. Everyone played great and
enjoyed the day. There were 3 ringers on the day. Richmond will be playing
at Woolston again this season and until their pitches are in place again at
the Richmond Club. We are very happy to have them with us again. The
pairs were drawn out of the hat and the winners on the day were Dave Cox
and Peter Forde, congrats to them.
Our Open day is on Saturday 7th September and if we get the same weather
it will be great. Anyone can come along and see what we do and new players
are always welcome. Unfortunately the Ashburton club will no longer be
playing as their numbers have gone into decline. It is hard to get new players
but we will keep going as long as we can with the 16 players we have just
now. It's always an enjoyable day with lots of laughs and a few drinks of
course. We are very sociable.
We will be playing outside behind the Sports Hall on nearly every Saturday
until early May next year.
