Kia Ora and welcome,
Wow, what a busy month July was!
Firstly, I want to acknowledge the organising
committee of the National Women’s Indoor Bowls
tournament, held here at the club in early July .
This was a massive event, which was extremely well
run by an energetic and throughly committed team
from our Indoor bowls section.
To Shane, Sue, Donna, Rob and the large team of
volunteers whom so willingly gave of their time for
the full duration of the tournament, congratulations
on a top achievement.
I am well aware that things didn’t go totally to plan early on , teething problems did
present themselves and given the numbers involved, it was difficult to plan for all
scenarios, all of the time, however, with the cooperation of our staff and the
organising committee, solutions in most cases were readily implemented. (To quote
an old saying, ‘It was the putting right that counts’!)
The feedback I received from a majority of our visitors was predominantly positive
and credit for this falls directly to the organising committee.
Our staff , both front of house and restaurant were totally under the pump and thus it
is extremely important that we take the responsible approach to support them, while
also recognising their commitment of going that extra mile during this busy time!
We must remember that during that same window, we also hosted the NZ billiards
and snooker championships which was of a two week duration.
I believe we were great hosts for both events, and our congratulations go to all the
winners of both tournaments, however I would like to make special mention of the
Woolston Club Women’s Four, who won a pulsating final on the last end with the last
bowl bowled on the last evening of the tournament!! What a great thrill for all the
Woolstonites!!
On another positive note, our club hosted the Lincoln University mid year ball,
closing the club for one day. Again, a massive commitment from the staff to a well
run event, with an extremely well earned financial windfall at its conclusion for the
club. Members, thank you for your patience on that particular Wednesday.
The two big shows we hosted in July, the “Totally 80’s” Show and “The Great
Pretenders” were sellouts and massively successful.
Prior to the latter show, our popular bartender Lindi had wee fall, hurting her back
in the process. A doctor was present and Lindi received the appropriate care on the
spot. However, what did really impress me was the many caring club members,
who came to Lindi’s aid, and demanded that I, and the club had a “duty of care”
towards Lindi’s health, wellbeing and safety at this time.
As responsible employers, that is exactly what our staff are entitled to and what we
have an obligation to provide in all instances no matter the circumstances. With the
assistance of other staff, my wife and I on the night, this was provided as one would
expect. Thankfully Lindi has since enjoyed a full recovery.
Looking forward, there are many exciting events and activities coming up on our
calendar, keep an eye out for something that may suit you.
One event coming along in September is the day coach trip to the Methven trots.
Those that attended last year had a ball and I am picking we will get a bus load
again this time round. Keep an eye on the notice board for further details.
Finally, the weather has been so mild, I wonder if winter is about to hit???
Keep warm!
Kind regards,
Ian
I wanted to acknowledge the support and generosity shown recently by Jeff Lee and
the team at Commercial Doors.
Our main front entry doors have been in service for many years but have been
coming to the end of their working life. Spare parts for them have been getting
harder to find as this model is now effectively obsolete.
You may have noticed that the internal doors were not operational for some time
and as winter was approaching this became increasingly pressing. The cost to fix
them was around five thousand dollars.
Are you, or anybody you know, tying the knot?
Visit us Sunday 25th August at “With this Ring” Bridal Show, and
find out how the Woolston Club will work for
your special day.
As we are always watching where and how we spend our money, I asked Jeff if
there were any alternative solutions that might help us manage the repair costs.
In the conversation Jeff mentioned that his father Alan or “Bluegum” as he was
known (an Aussie by birth) had been a member of the Woolston Club for over 40
years. A keen member of the indoor bowls section in its heyday Alan represented
the Club at national and regional tournaments over many years. By all accounts Alan
was a real character and likeable member of the Woolston Club family.
As part of an ongoing relationship with the Club, Jeff, in fact had his 21 st birthday
celebration here in the early 80s.
In memory of his father and in recognition of a long family association with the
Woolston Club, Jeff offered to complete the repair work required at no cost to help
out. In fact, both sets of doors have been repaired and will provide the Club with
loyal service no doubt for many more years.
Thanks Jeff, on behalf of the Woolston Club we really appreciate your support.
- Tim

FISHING SECTION:
The new fishing season is not too far away from starting, so boats and gear are
currently being scrutinized and prepared for the first comp. The most eagerly
anticipated competition is the annual “Take A Kid Fishing,” which is held at the Groynes, on
October 20th. If you go there, you need to get there early to secure what will hopefully be a
productive spot, as 100's of kids test their skills (and the patience of their parents). Lots of
prizes to be contested for, as well as it being a fun day out. Fish and Game, as well as members
from lots of fishing clubs are there to offer advice to keen anglers wishing to develop
their fishing knowledge.
Apart from that, the section has been, and will be celebrating a few birthdays among our
members, so if your birthday is fast approaching, Happy Birthday from the rest of the section.
—Karen
WARGAMING SECTION:
The last weekend of July saw the
Dinosaur Challenge take place,
where a selection of our most
senior players contested the
Dinosaur Challenge Trophy (after
it was found lurking in a
cupboard). This was organised by
Brian Sowman and involved a full
day of playing out ancient historical
battles on the tabletop.
Andre's Classical Indians earned
the most points over the day.
In the fictional sphere, a
contingent of members are
gearing up for a Lord of the Rings
campaign. Each player will track
the trials and tribulations of their
rag-tag band of troops as they
roam Middle Earth getting into
trouble. This should be just the
entertainment to take us back
into warmer weather. —Zane
