SHOPPERS AROUND Rolleston Square should finally expect 

some work to be done on the unfinished footpath on Masefield 

Drive (page 3). 

But the issue isn’t over. 

The district council will fork out $93,000 and wants half of it 

to be reimbursed by the developers of the square. 

The Rolleston Square developer has previously said the 

footpath is the council’s responsibility. 

Director Lloyd Bathurst refused to comment on the matter 

this week. 

Whatever the outcome of cost sharing, Rolleston locals will 

agree that it’s about time the area gets patched up.

Council pays for 

repairs to Masefield Drive 


RATEPAYERS WILL initially 

foot the $93,000 bill to complete 

an unfinished footpath in 

Rolleston. 

The district council says it’s 

still negotiating with Rolleston 

Square developers over who will 

pick up the final tab to repair 

the footpath on Masefield Drive, 

outside The 

Warehouse. 

But until the 

agreement is 

reached, the 

council will pay 

for the upcoming

next month. 

The district 

council and developer Rolleston 

Square Ltd believed the 

opposing party was responsible 

to complete the footpath on 

Masefield Drive. 

Last month, Selwyn 

Times repeatedly asked the 

council if it would pay to finish 

the footpath, but it did not 

respond. 

A council spokesman finally 

admitted last week that it would

tidied up for the neighbours that 

live across the road,” she said. 

“I’m sure they will go through 

their normal channels of 

recovering the debt from the 

developer.” 

District council chief executive 

David Ward said the work will 

address concerns expressed 

about the area of road alongside 

the new shopping centre. 

Mr Ward said road widening, 

new kerbing and a footpath will 

be installed along the north side 

of Masefield Drive, connecting 

to the recently completed traffic 

signals at Rolleston Drive 

through to Dryden Ave. 

A new section of footpath will 

also be installed on McCaulay St 

to improve safe pedestrian access 

to the shopping centre.

LAWN MOWER FIRE 

Lincoln firefighters were called 

to put out a ride on lawn mower 

that was on fire on Friday. The 

incident happened at 2.20pm 

at Wardstay Rd, near Tai Tapu. 

Lincoln deputy fire officer Roger 

McLenaghen said the blaze was 

put out in about 10min and no 

one was hurt. A cause of the fire 

is unknown at this stage, he said. 

LED LIGHT UPGRADES 

Work on installing new LED 

street lights in the district 

will accelerate this year.

said the $3.3 million project to 

replace 5800 lights across Selwyn 

is on track for completion in 

2021. About 400 street lights 

have been replaced, mostly in 

Ellesmere and West Melton to

will face the incumbent

district after next local 

body election 

BY HIS own admission, it hasn’t 

been all smooth sailing for Mayor 

Sam Broughton in his first term. 

The former youth worker 

stormed in to the local 

government scene as one of the 

country’s youngest 

mayors in 2016 in 

a closely fought 

election. 

“Certainly some 

of the challenges 

have been around 

changing the 

way we fund our

pools and reserves – which I 

think has been a good move,” Mr 

Broughton said. 

“But obviously with any change 

there are things that will take 

time to iron out.” 

He said he was “looking 

forward” to serve district again 

by standing for re-election. 

“I still think there are 

improvements to be made in 

the way we manage our roading 

network and maintenance on 

gravel roads in particular.” 

Community engagement was a 

positive during his first term, Mr 

Broughton said. 

“Some of the ways we have 

done our engagement with our 

community around long-term 

planning, moving to meeting 

people where they’re at like 

community events, engaging 

with our schools,” he said. 

“And not expecting every 

voice to have to come through 

official line at a town meeting or 

something like that.” 

RACE: Sam

will seek his 

second term 

as mayor in 

October’s 

local body 

elections. 

But not everyone is happy with 

Mr Broughton’s first term as 

mayor. 

Former mayor Bill Woods 

unsuccessfully ran against Mr 

Broughton last election and 

slammed the incumbent’s first 

term. 

He labelled Mr Broughton as 

“useless.” 

“I’m yet to find somebody who 

thinks he’s doing a good job.” 

Mr Woods said he is unhappy 

at rates rises during Mr 

Broughton’s term. 

Mr Broughton responded to 

Mr Woods by saying the former 

mayor was entitled to his own 

opinion. 

Mr Woods said if he stood 

for mayoralty again, he would 

campaign on splitting the district 

in two. 

“That means the major 

populous area would be one and 

the rural area would be another,” 

he said. 

The populous areas that should 

be split are Lincoln, Prebbleton 

and Rolleston, Mr Woods said. 

Mr Broughton won the 2016 

mayoral race with 4892 votes, 

while district councillor Pat 

McEvedy was second with 4172 

and Sarah Walters received 4144. 

Cr McEvedy said it was too 

early for him to decide on 

whether he would stand for 

mayoralty once again. 

He also declined to 

comment about the upcoming 

elections how Mr Broughton’s 

performance 

Mrs Walters did not rule out 

standing again. 

But she also said it was too 

early for her to commit.

“Time moves on from the previous 

election. There was three of 

us where it could have gone either 

way and Sam was the one who 

got it,” Mrs Walters said. 

“I’m not going to say never 

about anything but I 

haven’t made any decision 

at all.” 

She would not comment 

on how she thought 

Mr Broughton has performed. 

The environment 

should be something the 

district should be focusing 

on next term, Mrs 

Walters said. 

“Changing demographics 

are [also] important. Environmental 

issues cover everything 

from water to transport,” she 

said. 

“While we’ve got a 

younger than New Zealand 

average population 

at the moment, those 

kids will grow up and 

their needs will change. 

We’re also going to have 

an increasingly elderly 

population who won’t be 

as mobile as they used to.”

at the spending as a need not a 

want. Because everyone has little 

pet projects, wanting to widen 

or tar seal a road,” Mr 

Clausen said. 

“For Leeston personally, 

we want the community 

centre brought 

forward. It’s currently 

planned for around 2024 

or 2025.” 

Mr Clausen believed 

Mr Broughton had been 

“pretty reasonable”. 

“I don’t think he’s gotten 

in to too much strife,” 

he said. 

“The council is still operating, 

there hasn’t been too many headlines 

in the papers. He’s 

different to the last mayor 

and the last mayor was 

different to the previous.

way.”

TWO DRIVERS are “lucky to be 

alive” after a serious crash near 

Doyleston. 

The two car crash at the 

intersection of Leeston, 

Brookside and Irwell Rds 

on Saturday about 4.45pm, 

miraculously resulted in no 

injuries, police said. 

Sergeant Phil Bayne said the 

crash happened after a white 

Mitsubishi Legnum – driven 

by an 18-year-old man with a 

17-year-old female passenger – 

hit a turning silver Honda Civic 

while attempting an overtaking 

manoeuvre. 

The Honda was driven by a 

51-year-old woman. 

“The [Mitsubishi] vehicle was 

travelling south [on Leeston Rd], 

and as it got to the 100km/h 

zone just prior to Brookside 

and Irwell Rd, it had overtaken 

three vehicles,” Sergeant Bayne 

said. 

“The front vehicle [Honda] 

had been indicating to turn 

right into Brookside and Irwell 

Rd, which the [Mitsubishi] car 

hadn’t seen.” 

As the Honda turned, the 

Mitsubishi crashed into its side. 

“The driver that was 

overtaking – when he saw the 

Honda turning – attempted to 

take evasive action,” Sergeant 

Bayne said. “He clipped the front 

right side of the turning vehicle, 

which then careened across the 

road into a power pole.” 

The rear right side of the 

vehicle took the full brunt of the 

impact with the power pole. 

“Had it been half a metre the 

other way, it would’ve been very 

different,” Sergeant Bayne said. 

The 18-year-old was on his 

restricted licence and breaching 

his licence conditions.

If the district does not 

have “quality” aggregate, it 

would be in “trouble” and would 

not survive without it, Cr Lyall 

said. 

“Being a realist, we need 

gravel from somewhere. Where 

it comes from would depend on 

the consenting process,” he said. 

Mr Bain said Cr Lyall’s 

comments were “horrifying.” 

“He’s more interested in his 

roading and infrastructure 

projects than he is in people’s 

health,” he said. 

“He’s not being a realist, his 

[Cr Lyall’s] priority is gravel over 

people’s health.” 

Mr Moore was also concerned 

by Cr Lyall’s comments. 

Rolleston mum loses 

battle with cancer 


A ROLLESTON mother who 

had alternative treatments to 

fight breast cancer has lost her 

battle with the disease. 

Nina Rodger died in the early 

hours of Thursday morning, at 

the age of 36, her widower Bruce 

said. 

Mrs Rodger’s condition 

deteriorated dramatically earlier 

this month. She leaves behind 

two children, Valentina, 5, and 

William, 7. 

Mr Rodger said telling the 

kids about their mother’s death 

was the “hardest” thing he had 

ever done in his life. 

“She always said to me when 

we first got together that she 

couldn’t wait to be with Jesus, so 

she’ll be very happy” he said. 

In December, Selwyn Times 

spoke to Mrs Rodger about 

her use of alternative methods 

– including a change of diet, 

natural supplements and oils. 

Mrs Rodger was surrounded 

by her family when she passed 

away. 

“The thing that’s come out 

of this is that Nina was given 

one or two days but she gave us

four,” Mr Rodger said. 

“And those four days brought 

in family from all around the 

world together to have a party

talking until her final day, Mr 

Rodger said. 

She was diagnosed with breast 

cancer three years ago. 

Her condition worsened after 

Christmas and she was given 

just days to live on January 13. 

Her funeral will take place at 

Harewood Crematorium today.

Cr Watson called IKEA 

to look into opening the

area already has the main 

South Island ports’ inland 

container storage,” he said. 

“That lowers not just the 

for new IKEA store 

cost of receiving goods but 

also the environmental impact 

because IKEA is built 

on importing goods from 

Sweden.” 

Selwyn Times asked 

IKEA if Rolleston was in 

consideration for the company’s 

South Island store, 

but it did not respond to 

the question.

ambitions would also fit in 

well in Rolleston’s location. 

“With the motorways, 

we have a catchment of half 

a million people within 

an hour of Rolleston,” Cr 

Watson said.

“It will enlighten people 

that Rolleston is actually 

growing,” Mr Ward said. 

Aside from creating jobs, 

it would also attract other

with attracting people outside 

the Rolleston hub itself 

– like Darfield and West 

Melton – it would basically 

make the whole district 

busier,” Mr Ward said.

doubt” that other districts 

such as Waimakariri

compete hard for an IKEA 

store. 

“But the reality is if they 

are looking at good land, 

good accessibility and all 

the services, in my opinion 

Rolleston is the path of 

least resistance for IKEA,”

Rhian Firmin, 30, recently 

created six short plays 

called Project T with her 

theatre company, Simple 

Truth. She spoke to 

Anan Zaki about her life 

on and off the stage

When was Simple Truth 

founded? 

In 2015, so it’s relatively new. 

Why did you form Simple 

Truth? 

It’s sort of always been a 

dream of mine to have a theatre 

company and our goal is to have 

it grow and become a full time 

job. Obviously that’s going to 

take a while in New Zealand 

because it’s such a small country 

and you have to fight for it. When 

I was graduating I was producing 

our graduating show alongside 

one of my classmates Taylor 

Griffin and we learned that we 

worked really well together as a 

team. We wanted to make plans 

for the following year so that 

when we were stepping out into 

the industry we weren’t doing 

nothing. We started up a schools 

tour around high schools in 

New Zealand. Now we do that 

annually. We started that in the 

North Island, now we do it in 

the North and South Island. My 

partner got on board with us, he 

was also in our class. Then we got 

a couple more (Robert Harper 

and John Rata), they jumped on 

board as well. It just happened 

that I’m the only female in the 

company. It wasn’t planned or 

anything, it just happened that 

way. 

How did Project T go earlier 

this month? 

It went really, really well. It was 

us putting our toes in the water 

in Christchurch, it was the first 

thing we’ve done in the city. We 

had great turn-outs, everyone 

was left smiling at the end of the 

show, which was what we wanted. 

People also mentioned moments 

where stories would hit them a bit 

harder. It was really wonderful 

and we had two fantastic reviews 

which we didn’t expect so we’re 

feeling really positive off the back 

of that. Our cast loved it, a lot of 

our cast is made up from Hagley 

theatre students and a few others 

aside from that, so that was really 

nice. 

What do you hope to achieve 

in the future? 

We just have the same sort 

of vision about the importance 

of Kiwi theatre and giving the 

platform to Kiwi theatre. That’s 

what we’ve always done as a 

company over the past few years. 

Either originally written work by 

people we know or ourselves, or 

plays from Kiwi playwrights. Our 

second goal is to bring theatre 

to the youth of our country. To 

show them that it is accessible, 

that you can do this as a career. 

When we do the schools tour, 

we do the show but then we also 

have a discussion post-show and 

we also do a workshop. 

Following your first 

production in Christchurch, 

are you hoping to bring more 

productions to the city and even 

Selwyn? 

Yeah, that would be great if we 

could bring it to the outer areas. 

All of us are from small towns so 

we feel it’s important to bring it 

out to smaller towns. Our next 

production is the Unseasonable 

Fall of Snow by Gary Henderson, 

which is a great play. Then we 

have plans to go into possible 

devised work all about female 

empowerment. 

In terms of your career, 

what have been some of your 

achievements? 

I’ve been in multiple Summer 

Shakespeare’s in Manawatu. 

I’ve been in full scale musicals 

like Jesus Christ Superstar with 

Auckland Theatre Company. I’ve 

performed at the Pop-up Globe 

Theatre. For me it’s been all about 

theatre. A lot of our company 

members have been on Shortland 

Street. Which is the normal 

question you get asked: “have you 

been on Shortland Street?” I’ve 

auditioned for them but I haven’t 

been on it. 

Would you ever want to go on 

Shortland Street one day? 

Look it’s a paycheck. That’s 

what is important. They’re a 

booming business and do so well 

for themselves. The turn around 

they get, they only get one shot 

per scene. One rehearsal, one 

shot, that’s a lot of pressure for 

the actors to be under. So yeah 

for sure, 100 per cent.

Is theatre your full time job 

right now? 

I also work at the Hagley 

Theatre Company, I work as their 

voice teacher. It’s a balance of both 

jobs [at Simple Truth and Hagley]. 

Where are you from and when 

did you move to Prebbleton? 

I’m originally from Marton, 

Manawatu. I moved down here 

with my partner Tyler Brailey, 

because he is from Christchurch. 

We moved down to have our wee 

son Julian, he’s one and a half 

years-old. That’s about how long 

we’ve been here. 

When did you start 

performing in theatre? 

I started when I was about 14 

as a lot of people do with high 

school drama. That just sort of 

kept evolving there to amateur 

stuff. I went to Massey University 

to learn about expressive arts, 

then I went to UCOL (Universal 

College of Learning) to learn 

about performing arts and then I 

went to Unitec [in Auckland] to 

do a degree in acting. 

What sparked that interest in 

theatre? 

I think it was being on stage 

to be honest. Just the liveliness 

of theatre and how it can change 

from moment to moment. The 

first time I was on stage it gave me 

such an adrenaline rush to have a 

whole crowd full of people finding 

me funny. It just gave me that 

glow and that feeling inside of 

“oh, I really love this.” It turned it 

a love of telling stories, being able 

to transport people into different 

worlds and having a voice and 

giving things that matter a 

platform. 

Aside from family, what 

brought you down south? 

Family was the biggest 

drawcard because they live just 

around the corner from us. Also 

a change of scenery, because we 

were living in Auckland. That was 

pretty full on money wise, people 

wise and just everything wise. 

We just wanted a change of pace. 

We felt like Prebbleton would 

give that to us as well as family 

support – and it certainly did. 

How are you finding life in 

Prebbleton? 

It was quite a big culture shock 

in the beginning. When we first 

moved here we couldn’t sleep 

because it was too quiet. Now it’s 

such a good pace change. It’s so 

much nicer, easier, more relaxing 

and we have parks in every corner 

of Prebbleton to take our son. 

In theatre, is acting your 

primary role? 

That’s where I started, but I do a 

lot of behind-the-scenes stuff. I do 

a lot of directing gigs and in the 

last few years I have been doing a 

lot more of that more than acting. 

In New Zealand, you sort of end 

up learning how to do all of the 

things when you’re creative. 

Is theatre big in your family? 

No not really. I’m told certain 

uncles of mine had interest in 

theatre, done theatre or written 

theatre or things like that. 

The creative thing was there. Both 

my parents are psychiatric nurses 

so it’s quite different to theatre. 

My brother is not interested, he’ll 

come occasionally to support but 

he’s not interested. 

Will you introduce your son 

Julian to theatre? 

With rehearsals and things 

there’s a balance between whether 

we can get his nana to baby sit 

him or if we can take him in. 

He’s had to come into work with 

me before and my bosses are 

amazingly understanding. So 

from the get go he’s been around 

theatre and practitioners and 

rehearsing and all that. He had his 

debut on stage [in Project T] and 

everybody loved it and he stole the 

show. He loves going on stage, of 

course he’s one and he’s going to 

do what he wants at the end of the 

day. So it became a very live thing 

for us and the audiences loved it 

as well. 

You mentioned your partner 

Tyler is also in the company. Is 

he in theatre full time? 

No he works in fire proofing 

buildings. But he goes on tour 

because he is actor. That job is 

just a money thing in between 

[theatre] projects. 

Green light for Selwyn bus trial 

overwhelmingly 

positive feedback from local 

residents, trial commuter 

bus services for Darfield and 

Leeston will start on Monday. 

Environment Canterbury 

received nearly 400 submissions 

for the bus trial connecting the 

two towns to Christchurch. 

Leeston Community Committee 

chairman Lloyd Clausen 

welcomed the weekday bus trial 

and hoped for another service. 

But Darfield High School 

principal James Morris said the 

service would not make a huge 

difference to students. 

A bus will leave both Darfield 

and Leeston between 7am and 

7.10am and a return service will 

leave Christchurch in the evening 

around 4.40pm. 

Each service will run one trip 

in the morning to Christchurch, 

and one trip back in the afternoon, 

Monday-Friday.

WEST MELTON teen Maddie 

Collins won’t be going back to 

Starship Children’s Health in 

Auckland – for now. 

Her mother Sarah Manson- 

Collins said the 15-year-old 

was cleared to stay at home for 

another month by Christchurch 

Hospital, after doctors assessed 

her kidney function. 

“She just had blood tests to see 

if the kidney had responded to 

the treatment for [kidney] rejection,” 

Mrs Manson-Collins said. 

Maddie, who suffers from the 

kidney disease nephrotic syndrome, 

underwent a successful 

kidney transplant a year ago. 

She was at Starship for more 

than three weeks prior to Christmas 

after a decline in kidney 

function. A recent kidney biopsy 

showed she was dealing with 

kidney rejection, Mrs Manson- 

Collins said. 

But last Tuesday’s tests revealed 

Maddie’s kidney was “coping 

really well.” 

“[It’s] really exciting because it 

was always a bit of a of a worry 

in the back of our mind,” Mrs 

Manson-Collins said. 

“She’s still quite anaemic, and 

that’s just a result of her being 

sick for 10 years.”

from her father Adam Collins 

about six years ago, but her body 

rejected it. 

She only had a two per cent 

chance of finding a donor match 

in New Zealand and the family 

had not expected to find another 

kidney in the country.

Firefighters converge on Darfield 


FIREFIGHTERS from across 

the South Island competed 

against each other in Darfield on 

Saturday. 

The United Fire Brigades 

Association of New Zealand 

South Island Waterway 

Challenge brought in 12 teams 

for the competition which dates 

back to 1885. 

Darfield chief fire officer 

Alan Kittelty said the teams 

competed in two person and four 

person events, running hoses 

and operating pumps in nine 

different challenge runs. 

The two person event was won 

by the Mossburn Fire Station and 

the four person event was won by 

the Kaitangata Fire Station. 

Mr Kittelty thanked local 

businesses which supported the 

event. 

The North Island event 

takes place on February 9 in 

Morrinsville, Waikato. Then the 

national competition will be held 

at Wainuiomata on March 3.

THE OWNERS of a Coalgate 

pub have been fined $30,000 

for treating their employees as 

casuals. 

Malcolm and Claire Bennett 

own the Coalgate Tavern and 

were fined for 30 breaches of the 

Holiday Act by failing to provide 

three employees with minimum 

holiday rights. 

The Employment Relations 

Authority said the owners treated 

their permanent employees 

as casual staff, which meant they 

did not receive some forms of 

paid leave. Inspectorate regional 

manager Jeanie Borsboom said 

an investigation was carried out 

into the minimum rights of 17 

employees at the pub. 

“One employee, who had 

worked for the pair for 10 years, 

was only paid for one sick day 

throughout the period. She 

worked whilst unwell, having 

been told by the Bennetts that 

she wasn’t entitled to paid leave. 

Ms Borsboom said the owners 

had no intention of actively 

exploiting their employees, but 

had not lived up to their 

expectations under the Act.

Big day out for 

first birthday 

OUR WEE lady is a year 

old. Far out. 

Her first birthday was 

awesome and a big day for 

all involved, starting with 

her baptism at St Mary’s 

Pro Cathedral. 

Being non-baptised myself 

and never having been 

to one, I was really worried 

about what I would have 

to do. 

It was actually a really 

nice and easy experience. 

The priest was really good 

and it was special to be able 

to share the experience 

with another family also 

baptising their one-yearold 

daughter. 

In spite of being super 

wriggly these days, Vittoria 

managed to behave 

herself right through. She 

didn’t even squirm when 

the priest applied the holy 

water to her forehead and 

only talked over him a 

handful of times. 

My sister-in-law Sarah 

and best mate Codey had 

both kindly made the trip 

from Australia for her 

baptism and birthday. And 

to take on the responsibility 

as Vittoria’s godparents, 

something that’s quite a big 

deal for Italians. 

For Vittoria’s party itself, 

Laura was lucky enough 

to win us the awesome 

prize of having it hosted at 

Baby Sensory. With games, 

songs, toys, bubbles and 

even a baby-sized bouncy 

castle. 

The prize even included 

a custom cake. I’m not sure 

we’ll be able to top it next 

year. 

Including Vittoria, there 

were 13 babies around the 

age of one. It was like the 

cutest swarm of locusts 

you’ve ever seen, watching 

them mob the most popular

new godmother, Vittoria 

rocked her party. She was 

everywhere and non-stop. 

I loved watching her 

have so much fun with 

her friends and there was 

plenty of full body smiles 

coming from Laura as she 

watched, so I knew we felt 

the same. 

Vittoria’s day finished 

by opening the minimountain 

of presents and 

getting way too excited 

before bed with her brand 

new paddling pool/ball pit. 

A very lucky girl indeed. 

Sunday was, by necessity,

WHILE SUMMER for most has 

been less than satisfactory to say 

the least, firefighters are still very 

concerned the unseasonably wet 

start to the season has created a 

ticking time bomb. 

Last year’s warm, dry winter 

and the wet start to summer 

resulted in the fastest plant 

growth in our region for the last 

30 years. 

As we continue to dry out over 

the next couple of months, this 

poses a significant fire risk and 

we all need to play our part to 

manage it. 

Most vegetation fires are 

preventable and are started 

by some form of human 

intervention, none more so than 

unattended rubbish fires. 

If you light a fire, you must 

remain with it and monitor 

it until it has been completely 

extinguished and made safe.

managed has changed. 

Councils now no longer have 

responsibility for rural fires 

and the issuing of fire permits. 

With this, several changes 

have resulted, one being a 

requirement to apply for a permit 

within a restricted fire season for 

all crop residue burning (stubble 

burns).

after they beat Southbrook in a 

nail-biter to claim the fourth and 

last final berth. 

Against Kaiapoi, they racked 

up 158/4 in their 20 overs, with 

Rupert Young top-scoring on

events in full swing 

Meet Your Street brings 

communities together 

Our Meet your Street crew have been out and about all over Selwyn 

most Tuesdays since November delivering free sausage sizzles and 

community catch ups. 

The gatherings have proven to be a fantastic way for new and old 

neighbours to connect, with the biggest one to date taking place 

recently in Woodville Street, Leeston, with 58 residents attending. 

Another 10 Meet your Street events are planned before the end 

of March in Prebbleton, Coalgate, Lincoln, Rolleston, Darfield and 

Southbridge. The last four locations were decided by lucky draw, the 

winning streets where Sheridan Drive, Rolleston; Landsborough Drive, 

Darfield; Farthing Drive, Prebbleton and Station Street, Leeston. 

Along with the Council-led events, 10 Selwyn streets so far have 

taken advantage of the Council funding that is available to host their 

own Meet your Street events with nearly 400 attendees. 

If you are interested in hosting your own neighbourhood catch 

up, the Council offers a subsidy of up to $75 per street gathering 

(conditions apply). Visit selwyn.govt.nz/meetyourstreet for more 

information and to apply. 

The Teddy Bears’ Picnic is always a highlight of Summer in Selwyn – and this year’s event was no 

exception with around 1000 children, adults, and a host of teddy bears, attending the event last 

week in Rolleston. 

Residents have also been enjoying other successful events including pool parties and our first 

outdoor movie – Elf. 

If you missed these, don’t worry because February and March are jam-packed full of fun for the 

whole family. 

The final pool party of the series, Floatchella!, is on in the main pool at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, 

which will be taken over by lilos and a couple of live bands! Or, if you’re looking for a more relaxed 

activity we have eight Picnic in the Park events coming up in a number of local townships starting 

on Thursday in Springston. 

Be sure to make it down to the Lincoln Green and Library and enjoy ‘A Month of Sundays’, our live 

music event series featuring local talent and fun garden games, every Sunday afternoon in February. 

There is heaps more to keep you entertained with outdoor and drive-in movies, skate jams and

Have your say on speed limit changes 

The Council is proposing changes to some speed limits around Selwyn, particularly around schools. 

The proposals include: 

· introducing 40km/hr School Zone speed limits, 

· changes to all 70km/hr speed limits 

· some changes to 100 and 80km/hr speed limits 

Public consultation on the proposed speed limits is open until Friday 15 February. For more information

The Council is also consulting on its Draft Speed Limits Bylaw. The Council proposes to update the 

existing 2006 Speed Limits Bylaw, referencing the latest National Land Transport Setting of Speed 

Limits Rule which regulates how speed limits are set and managed.

100 Days of Summer 

Over the summer holiday break we’ve enjoyed seeing all your 100

wandering around Prebbleton Nature Park, exploring Lakeside 

Domain, playing tennis at Killinchy, checking out the Devils 

Punchbowl Waterfall, mountain biking through McHughs Forest 

Park and completing puzzles. 

We’re encouraging residents to continue to adventure around Selwyn 

with their family and friends, and to share with us what you find!

Fire permits – check it’s alright 

A reminder to Selwyn residents and property owners that as temperatures warm up, and fire risk 

increases, it’s important to take care when thinking about lighting any fire. 

Responsibility for setting fire restrictions and issuing fire permits is now under the control of Fire and 

Emergency New Zealand. For the purposes of fire restrictions, Selwyn is divided into two areas: Selwyn 

Hill and High Country, and Selwyn Flats (which includes the Selwyn portion of the Port Hills). 

At present, all areas are in an open season – but this may change at any time. Fires cannot be lit on 

Council reserves, and permits are required for fires on public conservation land. 

The Fire and Emergency website provides information on permit requirements and an online permit

Help us build West Melton's 

new skatepark! 

The Council is consulting on design ideas for the new West 

Melton skatepark as well as where it should be located. 

The new skatepark will be a valuable recreation facility for 

children and young people in the West Melton community. It 

will be designed for beginner to intermediate skateboard and 

scooter riders. 

We’ve identified four possible locations for the facility and want 

to hear people’s feedback on these, and on what features should 

be included. Feedback is open until Wednesday 13 February.

Gold Cup on the line at Ruapuna

SPEEDWAY FANS can expect 

a ‘bumper show’ this weekend 

when Ruapuna Speedway hosts 

the 17 th annual Sprintcar Gold 

Cup. 

Drivers from the United States, 

Australia, Auckland, Tauranga, 

Stratford and Palmerston North 

will head to the event to take on 

the cream of the South Island 

crop. It will be the richest race 

for the thundering V8-powered 

class in the South Island this 

season. 

Ruapuna Speedway Club 

president Allan Daly said the 

cup is the crown jewel in the 

local track calendar and an 

opportunity for spectators to see 

some of the best speedway talent 

in the country. 

“We are really lucky that the 

local talent is so competitive. 

Hornby’s Jamie Duff is a real 

crowd favourite, and he will 

take some beating. His brother 

Steve is also one to watch, while 

Martin Harcourt (Prebbleton), 

Shaun Ashton (Leeston), Caleb 

Baughan (Prebbleton) and 

Jason Manson (Burnham) are 

sure to make a good account of 

themselves, while Ray Baughan 

from Prebbleton is probably in 

the best form of his long career. 

Ray certainly knows when to 

strike form at the right time.” 

Daly is also excited about 

seeing former Hornby resident 

Matt Leversedge in action. “Matt

lives in Auckland at present, 

but he’s a local boy through 

and through and a contracted 

competitor at Ruapuna. He 

recently became the first South 

Island driver to win a sprintcar 

feature at the iconic Western 

Springs track in Auckland. 

Plenty of good drivers haven’t 

done that.” 

Another entrant with a Selwyn 

connection is Australian-based 

Kiwi Jason Pryde, who will be 

driving for West Melton’s Brent 

Gaudion. Daly said there will 

be plenty of people watching 

Pryde’s efforts. “He’s the classic 

‘Kiwi boy done good story’. 

Jason lives in Perth, but is a 

Kiwi. He’s a contracted racer 

in the Australian-wide World 

SPORTS 

Sprintcar Series. They don’t sign 

up any slouches on that series.

immaculately prepared and

In spite of the visiting talent, 

Daly is confident of a good 

showing from the local drivers. 

“It’s going to be really 

interesting to see how our boys 

stack up against the visitors.

our track and both have a big 

following here. I think all eyes 

will be on how they go against 

17-year-old American Buddy 

Kofoid. He’s a sensation.” 

Kofoid won his first sprintcar 

race at age 11 and is touted as 

‘the next big thing’ in the US. At 

his Ruapuna debut, he sliced five 

seconds off the 15-lap record set 

in 2000 by multi-time national 

champ, Allan Wakeling. Twenty 

five drivers have entered the 

Gold Cup event, which will 

also feature the annual ‘Salute 

to Goodie Classic’ as a 20-lap 

feature race on Friday night. 

Daly urges spectators to get to 

the track early, saying “it’s our 

big show and probably the best 

ever line-up that we have had for 

a Gold Cup event.”

represents value 

A RADIO advertisement 

I heard the other day 

suggested we spend way 

too much money on motor 

vehicles and not enough on 

our beds. 

That rationale being 

based on us spending a lot 

more time in our bed than 

in our car. 

That got me thinking, the 

statement subscribes to my 

philosophy that you don’t 

need to pay a great deal of 

money on a new car to end 

up with a satisfying result. 

Take Mitsubishi’s new 

Eclipse Cross sport utility 

vehicle, it starts in the market 

at $34,990, and ends 

at $47,590 for a premiumspec 

VRX with four-wheeldrive. 

There’s also an XLS 

four-wheel-drive at $43,690 

which is the subject of this 

evaluation. 

All are good value, but it’s 

the entry-level model that 

appeals to me the most and 

works in with my introduction, 

you get a lot of car for 

the money and if you are 

like me and don’t need all 

the bells and whistles then 

the XLS-spec Eclipse Cross 

should suit. 

In saying that, it doesn’t 

miss out on much in comparison 

to the higher grade 

models. Sure, it doesn’t 

get leather trim but that’s 

perfect for me. Canterbury 

isn’t the most hospitable of 

environments mid-winter, 

and somehow the thought 

of climbing into cold 

leather on a frosty morning 

isn’t inviting. 

The base model Eclipse 

Cross also misses out on a 

sunroof, head-up display 

and adaptive cruise control, 

but elsewhere it has enough 

to keep the technophile 

happy, as well as keeping 

all occupants comfortable 

and safe. 

When I say the Eclipse 

Cross is new – well it has 

been around for a year or 

so, and I’ve been fortunate 

enough to drive every 

variant. It’s a car that impresses 

me greatly, that’s no 

surprise, Mitsubishi’s other 

mid-size SUV – the ASX – 

has been a good seller and 

a solid foundation for the 

Eclipse Cross to work off. 

Standing out with its 

edgy styling the Eclipse 

Cross is bold; however, it’s 

not as in-your-face as, say, 

Toyota’s CHR, but it is a car 

that will lure you with its 

design. I like it, but there 

are a couple of little features 

that will either annoy you or 

you’ll love. The one I can’t

quite get my head around is 

the two-part rear window, 

somehow I find the divider 

a distraction but I guess that 

is just something that you’ll 

get used to as an owner. On 

the plus side, I particularly 

like the grab handle on the 

rear door, it makes closing it 

so easy. 

At the other end sits a 

1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol 

engine. It fits with the modern 

way engines are manufactured, 

small in capacity 

but with the addition of a 

turbocharger to boost power 

outputs. Also, the turbo 

allows the engine to work 

freely and not work under 

load, which provides the 

benefit of thrifty fuel usage.

In my previous evaluations, 

I’ve mentioned 

that the Eclipse Cross is a 

fuel-miser, and in my latest 

drive nothing dispels that. 

According to Mitsubishi, 

the engine is rated with 

a 7.3-litre per 100km 

(39mpg) combined cycle 

average, that sits well with 

the 7.8l/100km (36mpg) 

figure showing on the test 

car and with my other 

Eclipse Cross drives. At 

100km/h the engine is 

spinning over slowly at just 

1750rpm, throwing up a 

5l/100km (56mpg) instantaneous 

readout. 

On the subject of figures, 

Mitsubishi also claims a 

112kW power output. That 

along with a 254Nm torque 

figure, available all of the 

way from 2000rpm to 

3500rpm, there is a strong 

feeling of response and 

urgency. 

Drive is channelled 

through an eight-step continuously 

variable transmission. 

That always promotes 

direct drive, between it and 

the way the turbocharger is 

managed there is always an 

eager engine feel. 

An Eclipse Cross owner 

can expect a 9sec standstill 

to 100km/h acceleration 

time, along with a safe 

overtaking time of 6.5sec, 

the latter attributable to the 

beefy torque figure and the 

area where power outputs 

are delivered. The Eclipse 

Cross is no sports car but 

it does have a sporty feel. 

That, and its economy rating, 

means satisfying use of 

our fossil reserves. 

The Eclipse Cross also 

handles well. As mentioned, 

even in base model 

form it arrives with a fourwheel-drive 

option.The mechanicals 

are based around 

the success of Mitsubishi’s 

old rally programme, the 

Lancer Evolution driveline 

is widely regarded as one of 

the best and that technology 

has filtered down to the 

Eclipse Cross. 

In loose surface situations 

it steers beautifully 

and has suspension control 

which protects the occupants 

from the big hits and 

contains body movement 

against gravitational force. 

I particularly like the 

Eclipse Cross, and if 

you take into account 

Mitsubishi’s 10-year 

driveline warranty you 

know it is well built and is 

going to last. 

In base model form it 

still makes you feel good to 

be in, and for my money it 

is certainly the pick of the 

bunch.

BLAZING: Celosia plants look like little balls of fire in the garden with flame-like heads. 

Inject some fiery colour 

into your flower bed

IF YOU want a lively injection 

of colour into your garden this 

summer, look no further than 

celosia. 

Celosia has bright flowers that 

make attractive garden borders 

and lovely cut arrangements. 

With its flame-like heads, 

celosia look like little balls of fire 

in the garden. 

It’s a small annual, which 

grows to around 30cm tall. 

Large, waxy, green leaves 

frame the its spectacular flowers, 

which bloom in vibrant yellow, 

orange and reds. 

What I like about celosia is 

that it looks amazing (like a field 

of fire) when planted on mass. 

Also, it’s a really easy flower to 

plant and requires minimal care. 

If your garden is already short 

of garden space, celosia also 

looks very pretty in pots. 

Technically celosia is an 

annual, meaning it’ll only last 

one season, but it can survive 

more than one season if grown 

in a warmer climate. 

Bring your pots inside when it 

starts to cool off and you may be 

rewarded again next spring. 

There are two types of celosia 

seedlings to choose from. 

The cockscomb variety gets its 

name because its flowers look 

like the head of a rooster. 

Its blooms are rather stiff and 

waxy and last longer than most 

flowers – both on the plant and 

in a vase. Its firmness also makes 

it a great candidate for dried 

flowers or for a bouquet. And 

the stems on a celosia are the 

same colour as the bloom, which 

makes for a visual treat. 

Kimono mix is the second 

variety of celosia available. Its 

flowers are bright and truly do 

look like little balls of fire in your 

garden, with feather-shaped 

petals. To plant a celosia, first 

find a sunny well-drained spot 

in the garden. Dig in some good 

general fertiliser to give your 

plants the best possible start. 

Plant the seedlings in holes 3cm 

deep, about 20cm apart. Give 

them a good initial watering and 

then afterwards water every few 

days. 

I recommend planting them 

with other annuals, such as 

marigolds, zinnias and asters, 

for some fun coloured variety in 

your flower garden. 

Celosia is fairly drought 

resistant, so if you head away 

over summer for a few days, 

your plants will still be okay, 

as long as you give them a big 

morning water before you leave. 

Give them a monthly feed of 

general fertiliser to encourage 

longer flowering. 

Because the flowers are so 

hardy, your celosia will hold on 

to its blooms until it has dried 

on the plant. So I recommend 

dead-heading them to encourage 

new flowers to come through. 

And, if you look after your 

celosia, its flaming blooms will 

reward you for a good couple of 

months. 

A touch of yellow 

You can also add some bright colours to your herb patch 

with summer-flowering herbs all in yellow. Marilyn Wightman 

has a few suggestions to get you started

These yellow herbs have been 

carefully selected to give the 

classical impact of a cottage 

garden by stacking the tallgrowing 

herbs at the back 

and layering them by size down 

to the front edge. 

•Elecampane (inula 

helenium) 

This is an unusual herb 

said to be named after 

Helen of Troy’s tears. It stays 

underground for winter, then 

sends up large, pale-green 

leaves in spring. By early 

summer, the flower-head is 

quite spectacular. It eventually 

grows to about 1m high. 

•Golden rod (solidago 

canadensis) 

This is another tall-grower 

(1m-plus). Its feathery-fronded 

flower-heads dangle down in 

late summer and this perennial, 

like elecampane, can be cut back 

in autumn. 

•Tansy (tanacetum 

vulgare) 

It also grows to about 1m in 

summer before erupting into a 

mass of tiny, yellow, daisy-like 

flowers. Has a serrated leaf and 

can be an ant deterrent when 

planted near the house. 

•Greater celandine 

(chelidonium majus) 

Low-growing, it forms a 

rounded clump up to 40cm

high, the herb lasts two years, 

but as a prolific seed bearer, new

The taller-growing yarrow 

herb gets to 50cm high and 

has a flat flower-head. One of 

many in the yarrow family, new 

hybrids form low, spreading

•Cinquefoil (potentilla) 

Its soft, lemony-yellow 

flower has a simple, fivepetalled 

form that was 

adopted by knights of old as 

their emblem on tunics and 

standards. Flowers grow out 

from a 30cm-round shape that 

hugs the ground. 

•Maori onion (bulbinella 

hookeri) 

A native plant that has no 

onion scent. It has rounded, 

hollow leaves and grows from 

a small bulb. Wispy, starshaped

While most of us appreciate nature, the dawn chorus can 

be a problem when we are woken too early by the noise. 

But as Rohan Rudd of Gumleaf Gutter Guard points out, 

that’s not the only issue with birds, especially when they 

nest in the spouting. The eggs and young chicks attract 

vermin which can then get inside roof cavities and rats and

Looking after your 

outdoor furniture 

Summer is finally here and it is time to 

get that outdoor furniture out, light up the 

barbecue and find the cushions you have 

put away for the past six months. 

To keep wooden furniture looking great 

season after season it will need regular 

maintenance and preservative treatments 

for weather and UV protection. Less 

maintenance is required if the wood is 

higher quality. 

How you maintain your outdoor 

furniture will also depend on the look 

you are wanting. Left untreated, many 

woods change to a silver weathered look 

and require little upkeep because of their 

natural resistance to rot. 

To keep wood looking like new, treat 

it with a sealant that will both preserve 

its colour and provide added protection. 

Sealants generally need to be reapplied 

every few years depending on the 

wear and tear and the weather. Before 

reapplying the sealant, check with the 

manufacturer regarding which products 

they recommend and wash and sand the 

wood first. 

If you are wanting to varnish the wood 

take care not to varnish over the top of 

screw fittings as the natural shrinkage and 

swelling of wood means you may need to 

tighten them. 

Avoid placing wooden legs straight on 

to grass areas as the moisture from the 

ground could rot untreated wood. If this 

is unavoidable give the legs protection by 

standing them in wood preservative for 

several hours so the solution soaks into 

the wood. 

Dish washing liquid is the best solution 

for cleaning outdoor furniture as it won’t 

harm the furniture. Water and white 

vinegar can be used for tougher stains and 

mildew. 

Clean up any wet spills as soon as they 

happen and dry them properly. 

During the warmer weather while your 

furniture is in use it also helps to wipe 

down tables and chairs regularly with a 

cloth wrung out with a solution of soap 

wood cleaner and, again, make sure you 

dry it thoroughly with fresh cloth. 

Maintaining your outdoor furniture will 

help ensure you get the most out of the 

initial investment.

Dairy conversions continue 

to decline in Canterbury 

Steadily declining since 2013, there 

were just 10 new dairy conversions in 

Canterbury during 2018. 

In Canterbury, nitrate levels in the region’s 

waterways have been rising, mostly caused 

by more intensive farming since the 1990s 

but with increased scrutiny on the impact 

of farm intensification on Canterbury’s 

waterways, Environment Canterbury is 

confident that its strict water quality limits 

are holding the line. 

In the Selwyn district, nitrogen losses 

from dairy farms must be reduced to 30% 

by 2022. 

“Environment Canterbury takes its 

responsibility to protect the region’s 

waterways very seriously. We have 

introduced some of the strictest rules 

in the country to help halt water 

quality deterioration in and deliver the 

improvements the community demands,” 

says Nick Daniels, Environment Canterbury 

Senior Manager Service Delivery. 

“This includes requiring all farmers to 

operate within strict limits and adhere to 

industry agreed good management practice 

guidelines. There is plenty of support 

available to achieve this – farmers can call us 

to talk to a local land management advisor 

or visit the website www.canterburywater.

In mid-2018, Environment Minister 

David Parker stated that some dairy 

farmers may have to reduce cow numbers 

in order to address the condition of the 

country’s waterways. 

Environment Canterbury’s response to 

rising nitrate levels was to introduce the 

Land and Water Regional Plan in 2012 

which included strict nitrogen loss limits. 

The plan was made partly operative in 

September 2015, and fully operative in 

February 2017. 

Farms that could not control the amount 

of nutrients being leached from their farm 

into waterways were required to introduce 

measures to ensure leaching is at or below 

2009-2013 levels, while in areas with rising 

nitrate levels, further reductions were also 

demanded. 

These include Selwyn district, Ashburton 

Hinds, and the South Coastal Canterbury 

area. In Selwyn-Te Waihora, for example, 

nitrogen losses from dairy farms must be 

reduced to 30% below their average 2009- 

2013 nitrogen losses by 2022. 

These controls, in place to protect 

waterways from intensive land practices, 

mean that stocking levels are effectively 

capped for most dairy farmers in 

Canterbury.

Muscle Car Madness is on this weekend 

All the late nights in the garage are paying 

off as custom and muscle cars from around 

the country are finished off and made ready 

to head to the Trillo Metal’s Muscle Car 

Madness show, this coming weekend at 

Rangiora. 

Muscle Car Madness was started 29 years 

ago, when a mere 44 cars were part of a 

small afternoon display as part of a camping 

weekend. It has been held at the same 

A&P showgrounds ever since. The main 

difference is the event’s tremendous growth 

with it now regularly attracting 1,200-1,500 

cars from all over the country. 

The 29th Trillo Metals’ Muscle Car 

Madness begins a few days earlier for 

registered competitors, leading up to the 

public days which this year are Saturday, 

26th and Sunday, 27th January. 

Along with cars from all corners of 

the world, there will be totally restored 

classics, interesting projects, hot rods, street 

machines, customs and of course, muscle 

cars. 

Craft stalls and trade displays will also 

take up a huge area, selling temptations for 

all age groups. There will even be a huge ‘hot 

wheels’ stall. 

A great array of music provided by school 

bands like 'Class Disruption' through to 

a rockabilly group 'Boom Boom Deluxe' 

from Auckland, and 'Cherry Devine' from 

Australia will play to the crowds, from 10am 

until 5 pm each day. There will also be a 

rockabilly pageant taking place on Saturday 

afternoon. This is an amazing dress-up 

spectacle for the ladies, along with categories 

for the youngsters as well. 

The most popular part of Muscle Car 

Madness is by far the Stadium Finance 

sponsored burnout competition. This year, 

a record number of top competitors will 

be coming from all over New Zealand, 

with Lack-A-Traction and New Zealand 

Burnouts bringing many professional 

'purpose built' cars. Some of these have

Canberra. This competition starts at 12noon 

on Saturday with the finals run at 1pm on 

Sunday. 

Entrants from newborns through to 

those over 70 years of age will be mixing 

together for a weekend of automotive fun. 

Many families take their annual holidays to 

coincide with this show, which contributes 

millions of dollars to the local community. 

The 29th Trillo Metal’s Muscle Car 

Madness show will be held at the Rangiora 

A&P Showgrounds, from 26th to 27th 

January. Entry is: adults $18 and children 

under 15 free; public hours are 10am until 

5pm each day. If you have a nice showable 

car (no junk please) you are welcome 

to display this at no more cost than the 

normal gate fee. With each day bringing 

out different cars you may want to secure a 

two-day pass (public hours only), which is 

available at the gate for just $30.

the Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna 

on February 1-3, where the action-packed 

calendar includes Mainland Muscle Cars, 

vintage racing, and sports cars, along with 

classic single seaters and saloon cars. 

One of the most iconic racing events 

in New Zealand, suitable for all ages, the 

event will once again headline the popular 

Formula 5000 single seater revival, along 

with a strengthening Historic Touring car 

category.

On the Sunday there will be specific 

activities just for kids, including a bouncy 

castle, face painting and, as always, you can 

walk through the pits, meet the drivers, 

teams and get to the all of the cars up close 

and personal! 

The ground shaking muscle cars will be 

raring to go, along with the ever impressive 

Formula 5000’s, a class with serious 

excitement. 

The Muscle Cars, which highlight a 

field choked with Chev Camaro’s and 

Ford Mustangs, have grown from the 

formation of the Central Muscle Cars 

in the North Island and the Australian 

Masters Touring Car category. 

A spectator survey at the last 

Australian Supercar meeting held on 

the Hamilton street circuit, resulted in 

the Central Muscle Cars outranking 

all other classes by four to one on the 

Saturday, and two to one on Sunday. 

Drivers in the Historic Touring cars 

will include four-time Bathurst winner 

Greg Murphy who will drive a BMW, 

along with multiple New Zealand 

champion Trevor Crowe who will be 

reunited with the BMW 635, a vehicle 

he drove in the 1980s. 

An exciting lunchtime show is 

likely to be provided by the locally 

built Formula One style “Rodin 

Fzed”. Murphy will take charge of 

the car, which has been built by 

Australian billionaire David Dicker 

at his amazing facility located on 

the Waiau to Kaikoura inland road. 

The project began back in 1999. 

In 2005, Mr Dicker found the 

ideal site away from the public eye 

to build a 2.8 kilometre test track 

with accompanying facilities. The 

latest model, the fifth evolution, is 

powered by a 3.8 litre Cosworth V8 

engine, which is reputed to achieve 

0 to 100kph in 2.9 seconds with a 

maximum speed of 300kph. 

The 28th Skope Classic will be held 

from 1st to 3rd February.

in the Selwyn District

Show homes give building companies the opportunity 

to showcase their work while illustrating innovative ideas 

for a new home. 

Many of these companies choose one of their popular 

house designs, making some changes to present those 

visiting the show home with options for including in 

their own new home. Often, the home is built to a certain 

specification. It might be an entry level home or one with 

more features. 

When viewing each show home, enquire about its size 

and the specifications applied, checking whether any 

additional features have been included in the home. Ask 

for the build price – with and without the extras. 

Show homes provide an indication of the type of work 

a particular housing company generally undertakes. This 

is why larger building companies with a broader approach 

will have more than one show home to view, within the 

same subdivision or across the district and city. 

As you walk through each room of the show home, 

assess the quality of the build as well as the fittings 

incorporated. These will indicate the level of finish you 

can expect if building with that company. 

Ask to see the company’s library of house plans to gain 

an idea of the range available to choose from. You may 

also enquire as to the level of change you can request to 

any design. Ascertain whether the firm will work with 

you from scratch to draw up a design if this suits your 

needs. The flexibility in this regard does vary from one 

building company to another. 

Look at the orientation of living to bedrooms for each 

home and weigh this up against your section or the 

block of dirt you are considering purchasing. Remember, 

a basic rule is to choose a final design once you have 

secured your building site to ensure your new home is 

positioned to maximise sun and light. 

Other questions to ask include: 

• What is the timeframe from signing your 

contract to completion of your new home? 

• Does the company have ‘spec’ homes available to 

view which might suit your needs? 

• Will you work with the salesperson or someone 

else through the whole process? 

• Will you have your own contact person during 

the build? 

• Will you be permitted to go on site once building is 

underway, albeit after consulting the company in 

advance? 

• Will progress payments be due only after each stage 

of work is completed? (This can protect you should 

something go wrong.) 

• Does the company provide turnkey options? 

• Is or can landscaping be part of the package? 

Before heading out to visit show home villages, 

brainstorm other questions you would like answers to. 

The more you learn the better position you will be in, to 

make an informed decision on what to build and with 

whom.
