Wednesday January 23 2019 News • By Louis Day TUG LYTTELTON’S first passenger cruise in three years has been delayed again. The cruise was originally scheduled to take place in December but was pushed back to this month. It has now been delayed again until next month. Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society head stoker Mike Bruce said there Mike Bruce is still paperwork to complete before any passenger cruises on the restored tug can take place. “The boat is fine, everything is absolutely tickety-boo there. We are just waiting on the final sign-off from the maritime safety authority.” Mr Bruce said once the paperwork has been completed, it could take up to three weeks to prepare the boat for passenger cruises. “If we get the sign-off at the end of this week, we will have to reheat the boiler. That’s going to take five to six days to do, then it is going to take a few days to get a roster together. However, Lyttelton Coffee Company owner Stephen Mateer said it did not boost his business. “My customers tend to be the more environmentally-friendly type. The tug has quite a specific clientele and I don’t notice a difference in my business when it is running.” Mr Mateer, a self-confessed “greenie”, did not appreciate the tug’s impact on the environment. “The tug boat burns coal and lets out a large amount of black smoke. Police said the 68-year-old from the United States suffered a “medical event” while eating breakfast at 6.30am. Sergeant Phil Bayne said the death has been referred to the coroner. The man’s family in the US have been notified. FIRE BRIGADE FUNDRAISER The Diamond Harbour Volunteer Fire Brigade raised $1600 at its barbecue fundraiser on Saturday. The brigade raised $800 from the barbecue and another $800 was donated by a local businessman. Chief fire officer Bob Palmer was overwhelmed by the community’s support. The money raised will go towards a new support vehicle. The brigade has raised about one quarter of the vehicle’s cost so far. $75K TO RESTORE COTTAGE The city council has put aside $75,000 for the remediation of Jeannie’s Cottage in Akaroa. Deputy Mayor and Banks Peninsula city councillor Andrew Turner has been concerned about the state of the cottage for a long time. Cr Turner said once the cost of the work is finalised, the remediation will start as soon as possible.
