CRAYFISH POTS continue to
go missing in Akaroa.
But there is debate over
whether they are being stolen,
run over by boats, or simply
being lost at sea.
Murphy’s on the Corner fish
and chip restaurant owner Jamie
Kiely said he believed they were
being stolen by people from
outside of Akaroa.
“There are these boats I haven’t
seen before that come down here
and don’t even use the landing,
they just drive their boats
around.”
The average craypot can hold
Akaroa wharf tension still high
“I have spoken to staff about it,
however, those photos were taken
in a rather opportunistic moment
between the staff removing them
from a rack when they were dry
and before moving them inside.”
However, Mr Milligan was
confident that a resolution could
to $100 per kg.
Mr Kiely said that around four
people had come into his shop
over the last couple of weeks
saying that their craypots had
gone missing.
One Akaroa resident said in
a community Facebook group
that it had been happening for
years which had led to them not
crayfishing anymore.
They said they had even caught
someone looking for crayfish
in their pot before throwing it
back into the sea with the rope
and buoy attached once they had
found it was empty.
Deputy Mayor and Banks
Turner said city council had
advised Black Cat to keep the
times.
However, Jason Wright, a
fisherman of more than 20 years,
said he didn’t think the craypots
were being stolen.
He believes vessels are simply
running them over. It was also
normal for craypots to get lost at
sea and he says he would lose at
least six pots a year.
“It’s just the way it is,
everyone loses gear, you’re
sticking something out in the
ocean you’ve got no control
over.”
Akaroa Police Senior
Constable Anita Osborne has
asked members of the public to
report any suspicious behaviour
to police.
Cr Turner said discussions
on the disability ramps were
ongoing and a report would be
presented to the Banks Peninsula
Community Board at its next
meeting to see whether the company’s
building could still meet
building requirements without
the external disability ramps.
DANGEROUS: The tram shelter on Main Rd will remain closed
due to concerns over the condition of its roof.
Moncks Bay tram shelter
deemed a quake risk
• By Louis Day
THE MONCKS Bay tram
shelter will remain closed due to
earthquake risk.
The 85-year-old building on
Main Rd has been closed
since Christmas Eve.
A recent assessment
indicated the condition of
the roof has compromised
the structural integrity
of the shelter, leaving it
vulnerable to quakes.
City council transport
operations manager
Steffan Thomas said he
was not sure how long the shelter
would be closed, or how much it
would cost to repair.
Redcliffs Residents’ Association
secretary Pat McIntosh was
frustrated to see the historic
building deteriorate.
“We have been asking them
[city council] to repair the shelter
for at least the last year.”
Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community
Board member Darrell
Latham said it is vital the
shelter be reopened as soon
as possible.
“The Moncks Bay tram
Darrell shelter is an iconic building,
Latham well-used by bus patrons
and coastal pathway
walkers alike. It is very sad to
see that it is fenced off. However,
public safety must always be the
first priority,” he said.
