St IVES
Written by Liz Mattock
Step out in style around St Ives, a wonderful
riverside town, basking in beauty in
Cambridgeshire.
Located a short distance from the A14, with easy access
to Huntingdon and just 15 miles from Cambridge, the
pretty town on the banks of the river Great Ouse is great
for a weekend break or just a day trip you have planned.
If you love wandering along historic streets, waterways,
finished with a bite to eat, this is the right spot for you.
St Ives has a bustling shopping centre with a good mix
of independent traders and high street stores. Markets,
selling local produce and handmade wares are held every
Monday and Friday with Bank Holiday markets being very
popular. On the first and third Saturday of each month
an excellent Farmers’ Market takes place from 8.30am to
2pm. Check the tourism website www.ourstives.com for
up-to-date information.
Refresh from your journey at one of the many cosy cafes
in the area, and with a good selection of restaurants
and family-friendly pubs, you won’t be able to wait
for lunchtime or your evening meal – not forgetting
afternoon tea, of course!
Depending on the time of year, annual events include
an illuminated boat parade, which this year will take
place on 7 September, The Old Riverport Jazz and Blues
Festival and one for next Christmas, the Spectacular
Snowman Festival.
The charming 15th century bridge and chapel over
the river is one of only three such surviving bridges in
England. Grab a takeaway coffee to keep you warm and
take a saunter around the town’s winding streets, over
the bridge and fill your lungs with the fresh air that this
time of year brings.
Catch one of the local buses and in 10 minutes you
will find yourself in Cambridge itself. Punting, river
boats, bus and bike tours all allow you to experience
Cambridgeshire in style.
There is a range of accommodation available in the
town as well as surrounding villages, but vacancies fill up
quickly due to the popularity of the area, so book your
stay early to avoid disappointment.
