According to the owner, Mzoxolo Mbalo, one of his neighbours informed them of the fire while they were returning from their job cleaning gardens. “I didn’t believe it, I thought they were joking,” Mbalo said. While waiting for the fire department to assist, Mbalo’s neighbours worked hard to try and extinguish the flames. “I believe someone was crossing the street smoking a cigarette and after finishing, they threw it into the grass which caught alight,” said one of the neighbours, Malinga Damane. Mbalo reported the fire to the police the following day and took the matter to ward 41 ward committee member Makhaya Tyilo. “He promised to speak with the ward councillor [Sindiswa Sikepe] about the incident, but so far they have not gotten back to me,” Mbalo said. Asked about the cost of the damage, Mbalo said it came to about R18,000 to R25,000. “All the important things in my life burnt, including my clothing, food, bedding, ID, matric certificate and other items and documents. “I left with only the clothes I was wearing and I have no place to sleep.” Mbalo is appealing to the community for donations or other assistance. He can be contacted on 078 - 1 3 6 - 78 1 7 . Missing teens found MATTHEW FIELD Three teenagers who were reported missing recently have been found and returned to their parents unharmed. The GO! & Express previously reported (“Teenagers missing”, February 7) that Titimani Yamkela, 17, and Samkelo Gulwa, 18, from MATTHEW FIELD Eastern Cape transport, safety and liaison MEC Weziwe Tikana visited Mngqesha Great Place outside King William’s Town as part of a larger tour of the Eastern Cape to mark the beginning of Safety Month. She was accompanied by SAPS provincial commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga and deputies Maj Lieveldt Location, were last seen walking towards Gasela High School and never returned home. It was alleged that Yamkela called Samkelo from home prior to the disappearance. After a preliminary investigation yielded no results, the SAPS called on members of the press to help in their investigations by Traditional policing project rolled out Gen Andre Swart and Maj Gen Zithulele Moses Dladla. Part of the celebration involved the rolling out of the SAPS Traditional Policing Concept, a six-month project that provides human and material resources to traditional authorities in an effort to combat crime in rural areas. These resources include a 24-hour police service point staffed with four police officials, a publicising the names and pictures of the missing teens. Two teenagers were found on Saturday February 2 at East London's Eastern Beach after being identified by local police. On that same day, Sanele Nkala, 18, from Ilitha Township outside King William's Town was also found in Mdantsane. Nkala mobile police station, a service centre and two police vans. The Mngqesha royal house also donated a room to house the officers, as well as beds for the service centre. Mngqesha is the second kingdom to take part in the project, the first being Nqadu Great Place under King Mpendulo Sigcau in late 2018. During their visit, Ntshinga met had been reported missing on January 30. All three were found unharmed and have since been handed over to their parents. LOST AND FOUND: One of three missing teenagers who have all returned home safely Picture: SUPPLIED Social media drive clothes needy pupils ZAVELA MAKWABE About 60 young faces in Dimbaza were left smiling last week when they got shirts on their backs and socks on their feet for the new school year. The pupils, ranging from pre-primary school age to high school, benefitted from a social media drive initiated by a group of friends based in the township. The Help A School Kid project is the brainchild of Asanda Ngcipe who said the initiative had started with an idea to host a school book-covering session with his friends for local pupils at the Dimbaza Community Hall three weeks ago. Speaking to the GO!, Ngcipe said the turnout had been completely unexpected. "The hall was packed with scholars from grade R to grade 12 and we spoke with them.” He said they would have had to wait until their parents' payday to have their books covered and others didn’t have the slightest hope. “Through the stories they shared, we realised that there was a great need for assistance. We then decided to do a little bit more than just covering books for these children. “We started collecting basic school necessities like school shirts, jerseys, tunics and even shoes," Ngcipe said. The group took to social media and sought the community's support through donations and in just two weeks they had collected enough school uniforms to clothe about 60 scholars. “We would like to pass our heartfelt thanks to everyone who heeded our call and helped in any way," Ngcipe said. with Chief Burns Ncamashe and helped draw up a memorandum of cooperation between the SAPS and traditional authorities. According to Ntshinga, the SAPS aims to extend the project to include schools and tertiary institutions as well. Rain will continue into Sunday morning but will dry off after lunch-time. Temperatures are still hot with the maximum coming in at 27°C. An impartial judge from East London has been arranged in order to ensure no favouritism. All dogs need to be on a leash at all times, well behaved, preferably inoculated and dewormed,” said Webb. Rudi Smit has choreographed a routine in the show and will also be performing.
