GHS golf event
washed out
ON COURSE: GHS staff members who were ensuring that everything ran smoothly at the golf day last
weekend, were, from left, Ana Taggart, Shelly Goldschmidt, Elisma Hayes, Nicole Shone, Hanneke Coetzee,
Kirsty Watson and Carlien Buss
SEAN HEIDEMANN
Last Saturday the Girls’ High
School golf day was played
and, as always, Ana Taggart
and her crew pulled out all
the stops to make sure all
entrants had a fantastic day.
Most of the field were still
out on the course when a
massive storm hit and the
day was washed out, but I’m
sure no one complained as
we needed the rain so badly.
A decision was made to go
the lucky draw route with all
the prizes, which resulted in
almost half the field getting a
prize.
Once again a massive
thank you to the whole GHS
crew involved in putting on a
first-class golf event and to
Theo Anaxagoras, the
principal, for handing out the
prizes. Everyone appreciated
his taking the time out to be
present.
I must correct an error I
made regarding the playing
conditions for the Windhoek
pairs. A player needs to pay
the R80 entry fee for every
round that he enters at our
club, but if you qualify for the
regional round, you don’t pay
anything from then onwards.
The next round is scheduled
for February 23.
All Joplin Rendall matches
that are not played yet will be
decided by the toss of a coin
on Saturday evening.
We need to have the
semifinals and finals played
by the end of February at the
l at e st .
A reminder to all golfers
that the new rule books have
arrived and copies can be
obtained at the bar. There are
many rule changes and
ignorance is not an excuse
for not knowing a particular
rule and a possible penalty.
Take some time and
familiarise yourself with the
changes, it is vital.
The golf AGM will take
place on February 13 at 6pm
at the club and all golfers are
urged to make an effort to
attend the meeting.
Upset over sports venue
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
Old Collegians president
Maxwell Levine said the
Victoria Park, Newvale
and New Rest communities
were unhappy that the former
Dumpy Adams multi-purpose
sports facility was now focused
on catering for soccer.
Levine said the communities
felt “marginalised” by local
government as they had to
travel some distance to
Mlungisi Stadium in order to
play rugby.
He said the Dumpy Adams
sport facility had previously
catered for soccer, rugby,
cricket, netball, hockey,
athletics and had a swimming
pool.
Levine said that the lack of a
sporting facility had also
robbed Maria Louw High
School and St Theresa’s
Primary School pupils, who had
used the Dumpy Adams facility,
from being able to play sport.
“The legacy project to build a
field with an artificial surface
started in 2010. I am not sure if
the community was consulted
Rain has final say in Breakers match
MAXWELL LEVINE
Inclement weather conditions were the
determining factor in the Breakers’
abandoned match against Berlin Tigers at
the Thobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre
during their Super 12 rugby competition
m at c h - u p .
Tigers were leading the match 5-0
when the match was stopped due to
lightning and a heavy playing surface.
Berlin Tigers will get the points as the
On Saturday, 146
people ran, jogged and
walked the course of
the Komani parkrun at
the Queenstown Golf
Club in beautiful
weather conditions.
Eight were
first-timers, while 23
RUGBY MATTERS: Old Collegians rugby president Maxwell Levine says Komani rugby players
and school pupils are suffering due to a lack of sports facilities Picture: ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
before it was done. However,
the residents had requested
that there also be a rugby field,
but they were told to use the
Mlungisi Stadium.
“This is where the battles are
with the municipality. They
placed the artificial surface in
the middle of the former rugby
and soccer fields.”
This meant that the Old
Collegians (OC) and Breakers
from Aliwal North,
Makhanda and
Stut terheim.
Christiaan Viljoen
completed his 10th
parkrun to join the
Junior Ten Club.
Congratulations to
Janice McKerry and
Brenda Forword on
completing their 50th
parkruns.
rugby teams have to travel out
of the area to practise, he said.
Collegians have been playing
at the Indoor Sports Centre for
the last eight years and before
that at Sandringham.
Levine’s other concern was
that Breakers, who were using
the Mlungisi Stadium, did not
pay, while Old Collegians had
to pay to use the Indoor Sports
Centre facilities.
to abandon a match during the second
half, the result at the time of the
abandonment shall stand.
Star of Hope continued their good form
with a 20-10 win over Old Selbornians.
Park defeated Buffaloes 33-14, leaving
the East London-based team with two
losses in as many matches.
Ntlaza Lions redeemed themselves
after last week’s loss with a clinical 34-19
win over PE Police. EL Police recorded
their first win of the campaign with a
24-16 victory over Kruisfontein.
“In order for rugby to
advance in Komani, facilities
have to remain available.
“Drug and alcohol abuse is
rife, especially in the coloured
communities,” he said.
Enoch Mgijima Local
Municipality spokesperson
Gcobani Msindwana said
community services acting
manager Jambasi Magwentyu
would respond soon.
Progress were too good for Despatch,
beating them 28-8.
Four matches take place tomorrow. Star
of Hope are at home against Park with a
win guaranteed to secure their semi-final
s p ot .
PE Police will host Old Selbornians at
Kemsley Park.
EL Police make the short trip to Berlin
to face Tigers, with Kruisfontein at home
to Despatch. Breakers and Buffs have
