School finally
gets its prize
DESMOND COETZEE
After a three-year wait,
Breidbach Primary School finally
received the laptop they had
won in a competition run by Star
Bread, which involved about 30
other schools in and around King
William’s Town.
Schools had to collect Star
Bread plastic bags and the
school which collected the most
won the competition.
Star Bread sales
representative Phumzile Nzimeni
said: “Breidbach Primary
collected about three refuse
bags full of Star Bread bags and
emerged the winners.
“We brought a bicycle
together with the winning prize
to apologise for only coming
now after the competition took
place about three years ago.”
Retired Breidbach Primary
teacher Lydia Cramford was the
grade 4 class teacher at the time
and said her class collected
more than 4,000 bread bags.
She explained how she
personally got excited about the
competition.
“My pupils went out in full to
collect the bags and I can still
remember in town when I was
with my kids and saw some of
the bags and picked them up,”
Cramford said.
Elated deputy principal
Samuel Cramford said: “I am
excited we have won the prize
and would like to commend our
former principal Ivan Harry for
always enquiring about the prize,
as well as the class teacher and
pupils who are not with the
school anymore for making sure
we become the winners.”
We at h e r
Expect warm and windy
conditions in King
William's Town over the
w e e ke n d .
Things start off
deceptively cool on
Thursday with the
maximum temperature
only reaching 22°C.
Some light rain and
brisk 14km/h wind from
the southeast will help
cool off matters.
The rain will have
disappeared by Friday
although the clouds will
continue hanging
around.
Temperatures rise
slightly to 23°C, but the
biggest change will be
the wind which climbs
to a dreadful 25km/h
from the northeast.
SPECIAL MENTION: The hard work of community policing members is rewarded at the recent CPF
recognised with awards
More than 200 Community
Policing Forum members and
Community Policing officers
were awarded certificates and
accolades as tokens of
appreciation during a CPF
awards ceremony last week.
The ceremony was held at the
MATTHEW FIELD
King William's
Town-based Nceba
Jakavula is one of the
latest emerging farmers
to benefit from Sanlam
subsidies.
Jakavula began
farming in 2018 when
he bought six chickens
from his grandmother.
“I saw a need to sell
free-range, organic
eggs with a
n e st - t o - m o u t h
approach.”
While the journey has
been difficult, he says
there are still big
opportunities for young
people in the SA
which saw the members of
clusters from as far afield as
Alice, East London, Mdantsane,
Butterworth, and Peddie, with
King William’s Town the host,
being awarded for their work.
Amathole district manager
Miranda Sinqoto emphasised the
important role CPF members
played in volunteering their time
and sometimes risking their lives
for their communities.
agricultural sector.
“In five to 10 years'
time, I'd like to see my
farm have a turnover of
R5m a year.
“I think farmers play
a big role in our
economy and could
stand up together to
fight poverty.”
Jakavula now has 145
chickens and says he
wants to expand his
farm in the next five
years.
He recently bought
five pigs for his farm
and wants to diversify
his business.
Santam CSI manager
Tersia Mdunge said
their company is deeply
committed to uplifting
emerging farmers in the
country and is
committed to providing
proper financial
education to help
farmers manage their
businesses correctly.
“This is a critical part
of the development and
upliftment of the
agricultural sector in
South Africa on many
levels from food
security overcoming
pover t y,” Mdunge said.
Mdunge said they
have managed to help
more than 3,000
farmers so far but there
is still much work to be
done.
“We are here today to
acknowledge your efforts and
contributions and want to say
thank you so much for what you
are doing and want to motivate
and encourage you to continue
the good work for the benefit of
your community,” Sinqoto said.
Eastern Cape department of
safety and liaison senior
manager Neil Naidoo delivered
the keynote address at the event.
