Grace Williams
Catalogue

Grace Williams
Grace Williams (1906-77) was one of the most prominent
and celebrated Welsh composers of the twentiethcentury,
and the influence of the landscapes of and
culture in Wales on her works is distinct.
After graduating from University College, Cardiff,
Williams pursued further studies with Ralph Vaughan
Williams and Gordon Jacob at the Royal College of Music
in London and then, on scholarship, with Egon Wellesz
in Vienna. After her return to London in the early 1930s,
she taught for a number of years at the Camden School
for Girls and at Southlands College of Education, in
London.
Her ‘homecoming’ to Barry, Wales in 1947 marked
a new phase of her life. She worked on educational
programmes for the BBC, but her main activity was as a
composer; writing most of her major works in response
to commissions from the BBC, the Royal National
Eisteddfod, and festivals at Llandaff and Swansea.
Williams’ output is mainly for orchestra and for voices
with orchestra, although she also wrote several songs
and pieces for solo instruments. She was also one of the
first women to write music for film (Blue Scar, 1948).
Williams has had a notable influence on generations of
Welsh composers both while alive and after her death,
and has a position of great importance in the musical
language of twentieth-century British music.
One of William’s most popular works, Fantasia on Welsh
Nursery Tunes is a light-hearted musical journey through
childhood in eight traditional tunes. The jubilant start
to the work is echoed in the finale with a calmer, but
effectively scored, middle section. Melodies used include:
Jim Cro, Deryn y Bwn o’r Banna, Migildi Magildi, Si Hei Lwli
‘Mabi, Gee ceffyl bach, Cysga di fy mhlentyn tlws, Yr eneth
In this four-movement suite for orchestra, Williams adapts
characteristics from ‘canu penillion’ or ‘cerdd dant’ (penillion
singing), a Welsh tradition going back centuries. ‘Penillion
is the Welsh word for stanzas. It gives the impression of
being a free improvisation, sung to the accompaniment of
a Welsh air played on the harp. This orchestral suite breaks
with tradition in many respects: it does not include any
Welsh airs, and there is not always a contrast between the
Penillion and the accompaniment. Nevertheless, it retains
the narrative style, stanza form, and many melodic and
rhythmic characteristics of traditional Penillion.’
taken ‘To the Wild Hills’ in a spirited, final movement that
dies away mirroring the lyrics “...the dance will be still...”.
