Bangladesh tour for teen
CALL-UP: Caius Faatili is one of four St Thomas’ students to
make an age group NZ residents squad.
Four St Thomas students
selected for league squads
FOUR ST Thomas of
Canterbury College students and
a Hornby High School student
have been selected in the New
Zealand resident rugby league
16s and 18s squads.
Nikau Waikato, Jaedon Wellington,
Felix Fa’atilii and Caius
Fa’atili from St Thomas’ and Jordan
Coleman from Hornby have
been selected for the squads after
attending a talent development
programme held in Cambridge.
Felix Fa’atilii, Waikato and
Wellington have made the 16s
squad while Caius Fa’atili and
Coleman are selected in the 18s.
The camp saw 80 of the
best 16s and 18s players in
the country put through their
paces both on and off the
field at the three-day camp,
with everything they learnt
culminating in two trial matches
on the final day. The talent on
display left selectors with some
difficult decisions to make as
players battled it out in hopes of
catching the coaches’ eyes.
The squads will assemble on
during the school holidays on 15
April 15 and July 8, with a game
in October to be announced in
the coming months.
CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High
School’s Angus Sidey will get
his first taste of cricket in the
subcontinent when he heads
to Bangladesh with the New
Zealand under-19 team in April.
The 16-year-old received a
phone call from NZ under-19
coach and former Canterbury
and Black Caps batsman Peter
Fulton last week.
“It was pretty incredible really
. . . I was part of an emerging
players’ camp earlier in the year
but I had no idea I’d get the call
up,” said Sidey.
The right-arm pace bowler
is just one of three Canterbury
players named in the squad
along with St Andrew’s College
students Jesse Frew and Rhys
Mariu
The tour to Bangladesh will
be the New Zealand’s first series
in the lead up to the World Cup,
which will be played in South
Africa in January.
“It would be a bit of a dream
to make the World Cup team.
There will certainly be a bit of
pressure under the spotlight in
Bangladesh, but I wont let it get
to me,” said Sidey.
“It will be a interesting challenge
bowling in spin-friendly
conditions.”
The Bangladesh tour will start
with a 50-over warm-up game,
followed by five 50-over contests.
Of the opportunity to play
EXPERIENCE: Angus Sidey will get his first taste of cricket in
the sub continent when he travels to Bangladesh with the NZ
under-19 team in April.
Bangladesh, who recently
hosted the England under-19s,
Paul Wiseman, the former
Canterbury and Black Caps
spinner who is the programme
leader for the under-19s,
said: “We see this as purely
a wonderful opportunity; a
subcontinental tour that the
players will really benefit from.
I think we’ll learn a lot about
players over there.”
Teaching and learning during construction
The redevelopment works will be carried out in such a way as to enable school business to continue as normal. Buildings will
be refurbished in sequence, with students decanted into spare classrooms. There will be three stages to the works.
Oaklands School
Project Update
Oaklands School is embarking on an exciting journey to transform our campus to meet our
vision for teaching and learning, now and into the future. This newsletter aims to inform and
update our school community on the redevelopment project. The proposed design transforms
Oaklands School, creating a new school entrance, with central courtyard surrounded by
administration, library and hall. The school’s teaching spaces will also be transformed into
new innovative learning environments.
Our vision
It is our goal to support and
nurture our students for their
unique strengths and talents at
Oaklands School.
We aim to meet individual learning
needs.
This can be seen in everything we do
from our flexible learning using an
inquiry approach, the opportunities
children have to learn in a wide range
of learning opportunities, extension/
enrichment programmes and strong
remedial programmes for those needing
targeted support.
Our CARE Values is a strong part of our
school culture in promoting life long
learners.
Innovative learning
environments
The world we are preparing our children
for is always changing.
Education needs to keep pace with this constant
evolution. Innovative learning environments are
capable of adapting as educational practice
evolves.
Innovative learning environments encourage
collaboration and inquiry for both children
and teachers. They allow the teacher to teach
in a range of styles and groups to best meet
the strengths and needs of a diverse group of
children.
The Ministry of Education has been very
supportive in working with the school to design
buildings that will support the constantly evolving
way of teaching and learning at Oaklands School.
We are Life Long
Learners who Aspire to
Excellence
We believe that learning is effective and
successful when:
• Learners experience success
• Meaningful relationships are built and
maintained
• We are connected collaboratively
• We know the learner
• We are all learning to learn in
authentic and purposeful contexts
• We approach learning with a growth
mindset
We have worked really hard
preparing for our redevelopment and
will keep focused on teaching and
learning throughout the project. So
much work has taken place during
the planning stages to ensure our
learning environments with
complement our excellent teaching
practices.
“Our redevelopment will involve the
demolition of 11 school buildings,
refurbishment of six buildings,
including the hall, as well as the
construction of three new buildings”,
The school will remain operational
during the redevelopment which is
expected to be completed by August
2020.
Health and safety during
construction
The new buildings will comply to 100% new building standards.
Safety of students, staff and the public has priority during
construction.
Health and safety plans will be put in place prior to any work
proceeding on site, and will be actively managed throughout the
construction period.
Construction zones will be in place during construction, with no
access available for students, staff, or the general public.
