Crime cameras needed now
• By Louis Day
A KEY FIGURE behind the bid
for crime cameras in Sumner
says they are now needed more
than ever.
Matt Wood said the area
should have some form of
security after a string of petty
crime this month.
Tools have been stolen from
two separate construction sites,
four vehicles have
been broken into,
and cars have
been vandalised.
Mr Wood,
who lives in
Sumner and is
chief executive
Matt Wood
of security
company,
October
Protection, is ready to supply
Safer Sumner with security
cameras after the group raised
$4000.
But police say $20,000 cameras
are needed so they can be
aligned to their system.
Safer Sumner approached the
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board for the
additional $16,000 in December.
The group is waiting for more
information which may come
back mid-next month.
Latham: “The board has
requested and is currently
waiting to receive further
technical information from
council regarding costings,
quality of cameras required and
feedback from NZ Police so as to
be able to be in a better position
to make an informed decision.”
Mr Wood said this was not
good enough.
“The community raised $4000
and I’ve got $4000 worth of
cameras to go up and all we face
SKYROCKETED: The cost for security cameras increased from $4000 to $20,000 after police
requested the cameras aligned with their system.
is opposition.”
He said the $4000 cameras
would be better than nothing
and would at least act as a
deterrent.
“Criminals will look for two
things, weakness and wealth,
Sumner portrays both and is
especially vulnerable with an
absence of cameras and a police
presence,” Mr Wood said.
Sergeant Franco Lovrich said
it was essential the cameras
aligned with their system.
“If you put a camera that is not
compatible with our system, it
is going to cause a whole heap
of resourcing issues in terms
of who is going to review the
footage,” he said.
Safer Sumner’s Kath Preston
agreed the area desperately
needed some form of security
but saw the cameras that aligned
with the police system as the
most logical option.
“I see the police cameras as the
long-term solution,” she said.
Fire rages, homes at risk
BACH LEASES
A hearings panel has
recommended the city council
extend the lease of the Taylors
Mistake baches by 35 years.
The hearings panel, chaired by
city councillor Sara Templeton,
recommended if the natural
hazard risk is proven to be
acceptable, the city council
should offer bach owners a 35-
year licence, with conditions
to protect heritage, mitigate
natural hazards and maintain
the character of the area. The city
council will consider the panel’s
recommendation next month.
POSSUM CAUSES FIRE
A possum tangled in power lines
on Andersons Rd was the cause
week. The fire destroyed about
Harbour Volunteer Fire Brigade
put it out. Chief fire officer Bob
Palmer said nobody was hurt but
the possum did not survive.
with only a few scratches after
on Sunday. Diamond Harbour
Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire
officer Bob Palmer said she was
