Ava surfs to grom
series title in style
TAYLORS MISTAKE surfer Ava
Henderson has been crowned
champion of the under-16 girls
division after completing the
Billabong Grom Series in style.
Ava, 13, won the final round
of the series at Piha, west of
Auckland, after coming into the
event with the series lead.
She took the lead after a
win in the second event at
Whangamata and finishing
second in the opening round at
Mt Maunganui.
With bad weather marching
up the North Island’s west coast
and set to slam into Piha on
Sunday, the event was completed
in one big day.
The first day produced solid
1m waves, ruffled by light crossonshore
wind at the south end of
Piha.
Ava advanced to the final with
a score of 8.9 in her heat, which
was good enough for second.
In the final she took things
to another level scoring a 12.0
to beat out Taranaki’s Natasha
Gouldsbury (9.27), Piha’s Liv
Haysom (8.76) and Raglan’s
CUT BACK: Estella Hungerford finished fourth in the Billabong
Grom Series under-18 girls division final.
Brie Bennett (8.4). Ava has been
in a rich vein of form this year.
The previous weekend she won
both the under-16 and under-18
girls divisions at the third round
of the South Island Grom Series
at Curio Bay in the Catlins.
Fellow Taylors Mistake surfer
Estella Hungerford also had a
strong showing at Piha.
The 16-year-old finished fourth
in the final of the under-18 girls
division. Earlier she won her
semi-final with a score of 11.5.
NEW LOOK: Linfield Park’s grass embankment is the new
home for 100 seats from Lancaster Park.
Old Lancaster Park
seats find their
way to Linwood’s
home ground
THE GRASS embankment at
Linfield Park is sporting a new
look ahead of the rugby season.
It is now home to 100 seats
from Lancaster Park which is
currently being demolished.
The seats have been
constructed near the halfway
line underneath the scoreboard
on the main ground at
Linfield, opposite the rugby
clubrooms.
“As long as you don’t get that
easterly it’ll be a damn good
spot to watch the footy,” said
Linwood Rugby Club manager
Aaron Flynn.
The seats were purchased
more than 12 months ago by
Flynn.
However, the placement of
the seats was put on the back
burner until this summer.
The installation of the seats
was carried out by former
Linwood player Shaun Lyons
and John Norton from Taurus
Construction.
“They had to get some
brackets made up and have
concreted them in, they did it
really well,” said Flynn.
The seats will be available
this weekend when Linwood’s
premier side play Methven for
the Tane Norton Cup.
The cup was established last
year between Linwood and
Methven – who the former All
Black captain also played for
during his career.
