Useful Apps for Education/Profession - Mr Akshay N H Page 9 Mr Akshay N H Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering St Joseph Engineering College Mr Akshay N.H received his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2014 from SJEC and M.Tech in Machine Design from Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, in the year 2017. His technical interests include 3-D design software’s like PRO E, Solid Edge and mechanical analysis software like ABAQUS. He is extremely interested in gaming and application of game theory in the teaching of engineering education. Useful Apps for Education/Profession Mr Akshay N H gave a talk on a recent teaching methodology called as gamification. Various fields in which gamification are presently being used were explained such as such as business, education, recruitment, marketing. Gamification is using game dynamics in non-game applications. Three ingredients of gamification involves motivation, mastery and trigger. Any game or any activity which can be gamified must have the three ingredients to succed. Motivation is where the consumer or the student or the customer is motivated to play more or use the application more. Example-Variable rewards and social recognition. Mastery is where the consumer or student must feel that he is developing a skill as he is advancing in the game or he will have to learn prior to completing the next levels in the game. Trigger is a part where the student or consumer must triggered to come back and play the game or the activity which is gamified. Speaker also stressed upon points as to how gamification helps students develop their problem solving skills and group skills and how gamification has become a part of recruitment which is termed as ‘Recruitainment’. A hands on session was conducted on how to create a mobile app using the MIT App Inventor. As an activity all the participants were asked to use their mobile phone and were given a step by step procedure as to how to create a text to audio converter app. The audience was also informed that they could create their own customized apps to make their classes interesting. “Using the elements of game theory in classroom teaching would definitely benefit our students” Dr Anjali Ganesh Department of Master of Business Administration
Emotional Intelligence – Dr Anjali Ganesh Page 10 Dr Anjali Ganesh Professor, Department of Master of Business Administration St Joseph Engineering College Dr Anjali Ganesh received her Ph.D from Mangalore University, in the year 2006. Mam is a corporate trainer and has conducted several training programmes in various banks, industries and educational institutions. She is an esteemed member of Indian Society for Training and Development (ISTD). With 25 years of experience both in teaching and industry mam is recognized as a member of BOS and BOE of several reputed institutions including VTU. Emotional Intelligence Dr Anjali Ganesh started her talk by giving a brief introduction about EI (Emotional intelligence). EI can be said to cover five main areas: self-awareness, emotional control, self-motivation, empathy and relationship skills and is a gateway to better learning, friendships, academic success and employment she added. To enlighten the audience about their individual EI level she conducted Daniel Goleman’s- Bloomsbury press EI test. All the participants actively took the test & enjoyed the activity. In the classroom scenario, she explained that students come from different mindsets and may have issues such as attention disorders, alcohol abuse in the family, learning disorders, health problems etc, empathy needs to be shown to such students. Teachers could impart EI in the classroom with the use of techniques such as Design Thinking, Flipped Classroom, Self Learning, Gamification and Story Telling. Dr Anjali Ganesh ended the session with Rudyard Kilplin’s song “I have six honest serving men, they taught me all I knew, their names are what & why & when & how & where & who.” “The session was very informative, studentteacher interaction will definitely improve with the application of EI ” Ms Jyotsna D’Souza Department of Mathematics
