Rolleston runs away with Challenge Shield<br />

ROLLESTON College took<br />
out the Challenge Shield at the<br />
inaugural <strong>Selwyn</strong> secondary<br />
schools’ athletics day at Nga Puna<br />
Wai last week.<br />
Rolleston won the most<br />
4 x 100m age-group relays to cap<br />
off a stellar event.<br />
More than 300 athletes from<br />
Rolleston, Lincoln High School,<br />
Ellesmere College and Darfield<br />
High School competed in track<br />
and field events.<br />
Rolleston won the under-16<br />
boys, under-14 boys, and<br />
under-16 girls sprint relays to<br />
take home the big prize of the<br />
day.<br />
There were also a number of<br />
top individual efforts.<br />
Lincoln’s Dominick Wilson<br />
won the under-19 100m, 200m<br />
and 400m titles.<br />
Ellesmere’s Scott Harper<br />
won the under-16 boys 100m<br />
and 200m double, as did<br />
Lincoln’s Alizjah Campbell in<br />
the under-15 boys and Darfield’s<br />
Casey Taylor in the under-14 boys<br />
age-groups.<br />
Casey also won the long jump<br />
title in his age-group.<br />
Ellesmere’s Nina Tucker won<br />
the under-19 girls 100m and<br />
400m titles and finished second<br />
in the 200m. She also won the<br />
discus and triple jump titles in<br />
the field events.<br />
Lincoln’s Caroline Richards<br />
won the 100m and 200m double<br />
in the under-16 girls event. She<br />
also won the high jump and<br />
long jump titles in the same agegroup.<br />
Darfield’s Emily Waters<br />
claimed victory in the 400m and<br />
1500m events in the same agegroup.<br />
In the field events; 16-year-old<br />
Theo Gilbert from Ellesmere<br />
College won the under-19 high<br />
SPEED: Ellesmere College’s Jacob Greenwood leads<br />
schoolmate Elijah McIlraith in the 1500m.<br />
jump and long jump. He was the<br />
only competitor to clear 1.55m in<br />
the high jump, while also taking<br />
victory in the long jump by 6cm<br />
with a leap of 5.35m.<br />
Rolleston’s Avelima Loua won<br />
the under-16 boys shot put and<br />
javelin crowns. He managed<br />
33.17m in the javelin to win by<br />
more than 3m and threw 11.03m<br />
to win the shot put by more than<br />
1m.<br />
Ellesmere’s Jared Poole won<br />
the under-15 boys shot put and<br />
discus competitions. He threw<br />
the discus 24.20m to win by more<br />
than 2m and backed up in the<br />
shot put to throw a distance of<br />
8.63m to win by 17cm.<br />
Lincoln’s John Mottus won the<br />
under-15 boys long jump and<br />
high jump. His leap of 5.71m was<br />
enough for the long jump title,<br />
while he also cleared 1.70m in the<br />
high jump.<br />
Darfield’s Alex Gerritsen won<br />
the under-16 girls javelin and<br />
discus and finished second in the<br />
shot put.<br />
Darfield’s Emma Watson won<br />
the under-15 girls shot put, discus<br />
and javelin titles.<br />
Lincoln’s Aaliyah Metcalf won<br />
both the high jump and long<br />
jump in the same age-group.<br />
Darfield’s Kirsty McCarthy-<br />
Dempsey claimed victory in the<br />
under-14 girls shot put, discus<br />
and javelin.<br />
Event organiser Chris<br />
O’Connell said he hoped the<br />
event will grow in numbers next<br />
year as more athletes found out<br />
about it.
