$100,000 to benefit charities
CHARITY initiative
Drive for Good has
ended in style, with three
charities sharing $100,000
at a celebration in the
Archibald Motors’ central
city showrooms.
The Champion Centre,
established in 1977 and
run by the Early Intervention
Trust, was the winner
receiving $50,000.
Canterbury West Coast
Air Rescue Trust and
Ronald McDonald House
South Island received
second and third place respectively,
each charity will
receive $25,000 towards
their causes.
The Champion Centre
offers individually tailored
services for children with
disabilities, including
speech and language
therapy, physiotherapy,
learning through play, and
education support.
Funding pressures mean
the average shortfall for
the near 170 children that
attend the centre is about
$7000, per child, per year.
Most families are part
of the programme for
five to six years, equating
to a funding gap of over
$40,000 for each child,
throughout the time that
they attend the centre.
Archibald’s chief executive
John Fairhall praised
the way organisations had
engaged with the initiative,
saying: “Every single one
gave it their all, and were
hugely supportive of both
what Archibald’s is trying
to do for Christchurch,
and the other charities
involved.”
Protest against water bottling operation
• By Julia Evans
MORE THAN 6000 people
will march through the
central city on Saturday
protesting against overseas
water bottling operations.
“Somebody needed to do
something . . . as a father
my biggest concern is the
future, what my children
and grandchildren will be
left with,” organiser Scott
Esdaile said.
More than 6000 people
have shown interest in the
event, which will start on
the corner of Manchester
and Cashel Sts at 12.30pm
and then go to Cathedral
Square.
Mr Esdaile said it was
“disgusting” that Environment
Canterbury granted
Chinese-owned Cloud
Ocean Water permission
to take 1.57 billion litres of
water a year.
Now Cloud Ocean has
bought land for a second
bottling plan across the
road from the factory it is
developing in Belfast, he
said some action needed to
happen urgently.
If it gains consent to
take water from the bores
at the new site, Cloud
Ocean could have access to
another 7.5 billion litres of
water.
•The March to Save
Our Water will start
on Saturday at
12.30pm from the
corner of Cashel and
Manchester Sts and
into Cathedral Square.
