Historic lodge
Dry ground poses injury risk
to be repaired

ONE OF the city’s oldest domestic
buildings, located on Racecourse
Rd, will be able to be lived in again
after being unoccupied for about
four years.
The city council will carry out
earthquake repairs on the historical
Chokebore Lodge.
Built in the 1850s, the lodge was
sold to horse trainer and breeder
Henry Redwood, who was later
dubbed the father of New Zealand
racing.
Though Mr Redwood remained
in Nelson, horses were trained at
Chokebore by jockey and trainer
Edward Cutts.

Moses said while a contractor
needs to be engaged to provide
a programme on the repairs, the
preliminary date for handover is
October next year.
Following the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, the previous tenant
was required to leave as the building
was below 34 per cent New
Building Standard.
There was a severe failing of the
western and northern cob walls
and repair work is required to
the other cob walls but to a lesser
extent.
The project will cost $1.17 million.

RELIEF IS under way for the
bone dry McCormacks Bay
sports field.
The city council has fixed the
broken irrigation system which
led to the field deteriorating over
the summer.
But the fix has come too late
for Sumner Rugby Football Club
which wanted to use the ground
for its pre-season training.
Rugby development officer
Riki Tahere was envious of
Ferrymead Bays FC’s luscious
training pitch at Barnett Park.
“If you were comparing apples
with apples, our one would be a
bit of a rotten one,” he said.
Mr Tahere said the
McCormacks Bay sports field
was dry and solid posing a
potential injury risk.
He suspected the field had
not been watered for six months
before city council completed
repairs of the irrigation system
and watered the fields last week.
However, city council manager
of community parks Al Hardy
said it was difficult to know
how long the issues with the
irrigation system had existed.
Mr Hardy said the field would
be included in the annual
sports field autumn renovation
programme that is scheduled to

an injury waiting to happen,
whether it is soft tissue or a
concussion from the hard
ground,” Mr Tahere said.

of the field has been a major
disruption to their pre-season
with their season set to start at
the end of this month.
“As McCormacks Bay got
worse we were constantly
changing venues between South
Hagley and Malvern Park at
the last minute which has really
impacted our numbers.”
