New bottle
store on
track to
open in
Halswell
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
AN APPLICATION to open an
off-licence bottle store in Halswell
still appears to be on track.
Southern View reported two
weeks ago Bottle-O Halswell
Ltd had cancelled its contract
to purchase a shop at The Oaks
Village Halswell complex,
indicating the bottle store would
not go ahead.
However, it has now been
revealed Bottle-O Halswell Ltd is
negotiating to lease the premises at
29 Ensign St, instead of buying it.
Director and shareholder Wendy
Gibbons would not comment on
whether it would be leasing the
premises.
In December, Bottle-O Halswell
Ltd was granted an application
to open an off-licence liquor
store on Ensign St. The decision
was appealed by the Halswell
Residents’ Association and a
hearing is scheduled in May.
An email from city council
district licensing committee team
leader Allison Houston to the
Halswell Residents’ Association
on February 25 confirmed the
company is now negotiating to
lease the premises.
IT’S ONLY taken six years, but finally
the Government organisation which
looks after the red zone has woken up to
the need for “no motor-cycle” signs in
Southshore.
Local community board member Tim
Sintes (see page 10) says people using the walking tracks and
beach are in danger. He is worried there will be the odd punchup
too as frustration grows.
Sintes raises a valid point about the motor bikes. The sooner
the signs are put up the better.
And bad news for seagulls on page 3. The city council is looking
at seagull-proof rubbish bins on the north and south ramps.
No doubt they’ll swoop elsewhere for the left over chips and
bits of batter.
Colombo St roadworks almost finished
Welcome
relief for
businesses
• By Julia Evans
THE END is in sight for
businesses on Colombo St which
have been disrupted by major
roadworks over the last year.
The work is on track to be
finished in June, a year after it
started. It involves installing a
new wastewater line along the
middle of Colombo St from
the roundabout at Dyers Pass,
Cashmere and Centaurus Rds to
Fisher Ave.
Cashmere Gallery Florist
owner Jenny Hollands said the
businesses are looking forward to
the completion date.
“They’re just about finished. It’s
been okay, but they’ve been really
good to us,” she said.
“It’s been congested and
incredibly disrupted, but it was
really good of them to let us keep
a bit of parking.”
Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board chairwoman Karolin
Potter said there has been a lot of
frustration from businesses and
residents.
Ms Potter said the work is
the “most intensive” in the
city.
City council acting head of
three waters and waste John
Moore said the work will provide
a back-up system for the existing
wastewater main during flood
events, as well as preparing for
more properties linking into the
network.
But Mr Moore couldn’t say
whether the work is the most
intensive in the city because each
project is different. He said work
notices were hand delivered to all
businesses before the construction
began.
“Prior to undertaking this
work, staff worked with a variety
of stakeholders, including local
businesses. As a result decisions
were made for a staged construction,
so that work would not
Work in front of Thorrington
Bottle store on track to open
at The Oaks Village Halswell
•From page 1
Said Ms Houston: “We
have been advised, (Bottle-O
Halswell Ltd) are not
withdrawing the application.
They are however in the
process of renegotiating their
tenure from purchasing the
premises in full to a leasing
arrangement.”
Residents’ association secretary
David Hawke said it is working
on its appeal and is in discussions
with a lawyer about presenting its
case in May.
He did not have a view on the
bottle store being leased, saying it
was up to the applicant.
The residents’ association’s
original objection against the
application stated there were
sufficient facilities in Halswell for
alcohol with Craythorne’s Public
House, Super Liquor and New
World Halswell.
Mr Hawke said there is
evidence any new bottle
store going into an area
significantly increases
alcohol-related harm.
But the decision granting the
application said Mrs Gibbons had
the experience necessary to safely
PLANNED: A bottle store may still open at the The Oaks Village
Halswell complex in Ensign St, Halswell.
sell alcohol.
It said alcohol-related
harm would be minimised
by good amenity in the
area and the position of the
store within the development.
Farewell events to
mark demolition
of Linwood College
A CELEBRATION is planned
for April 5 and 6 to celebrate
the past 65 years of educational
history of Linwood College.
In mid-2019, the school’s
buildings will be demolished in
preparation for a full rebuild on
site.
At $44 million the rebuild
budget is one of the largest of
any of the Ministry of Education’s
rebuild programme since
the February 22, 2011, earthquake.
Students enrolled at the school
will be relocated to old Avonside
Girls’ High site for the full duration
of the rebuild.
When news of the rebuild was
released, approaches were made
to the school for an opportunity
to celebrate its past.
At the time it was built in
1954, Linwood High was the
first post-war co-educational
school to open in the entire
country.
While the school looked more
like a building site than an
educational campus on opening
day, the community soon
proudly rallied around its new
high school and ensured it had
the resources equivalent to any
existing school in the city.
To mark the demolition
of the buildings a ticketed
Conversazione event is being
hosted on April 5 and a free
open day on April 6.
The event will end with a
farewell ceremony at 3pm. This
event is open to anyone in the
community to attend.
Past students from all over
New Zealand and Australia
have bought tickets to attend
the farewell says the chair of the
event’s organising committee
Linda Rutland.
“People have a real attachment
to their old school with the
original 1954s remaining a very
tight-knit group.”
Secondary Schools’ Enrolment
Scheme Consultation
Greater Christchurch state secondary school principals and
boards of trustees have undertaken a joint effort to strengthen the
current secondary network. One of the outcomes of this work
is the proposed implementation of new enrolment schemes
and amendments to existing enrolment schemes for some coeducational
state secondary schools. There are seven secondary
schools proposing to amend or implement a scheme, which are:
• Burnside High School
• Haeata Community Campus
• Hillmorton High School
• Linwood College
• Mairehau High School
• Papanui High School
• Riccarton High School
More information on this process and an online
survey to gather feedback can be found at:
www.shapingeducation.govt.nz/secondary
There are also public meetings to gather feedback:
• Wednesday 20th March, 7pm – 8pm – Hillmorton High School
• Monday 25th March, 7pm – 8pm – Papanui High School
• Tuesday 26th March, 7pm – 8pm – Riccarton High School
• Thursday 28th March, 7pm – 8pm – Burnside High School
• Tuesday 2nd April, 7pm – 8pm – Linwood College
• Thursday 4th April, 6.30pm – 7.30pm – Mairehau High School
• Wednesday 10th April, 6pm – 7pm – Haeata Community Campus
Similar content will be covered in all sessions, so feel free to
attend whichever best suits your schedule.

FREE SPEECH: Halswell resident Greig Russell was removed
from the Halswell Community Group Facebook page when he
posted a mobile number online. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
OUTSPOKEN Halswell resident
Greig Russell has always believed
in the power of free speech.
After being removed from a
community Facebook page in
Halswell of nearly 11,000 members
for posting a mobile number
online, the 40-year-old steel
fabricator has taken a stand on
people having the right to speak
their mind.
Mr Russell set up his own
community Facebook page called
Halswell Community Page Uncensored
after falling out with the
administrators of the Halswell
Community Group page.
Now bumper stickers with
#bringbackgreigrussell and
#LETSMAKEHALSWELL-
GREATAGAIN have begun to
appear around the suburb.
Mr Russell said the idea is to
spread the message of free speech.
The bumper stickers have appeared
on the back of cars, on
children’s school bags and even
on community food shelf the
Sharing Shack in Halswell.
Halswell Community Project
chairwoman and one of the administrators
Chrys Horn said Mr
Russell won’t be added back into
the group until he can prove he
can behave on the page.
“If he has merchandise he
Greig Russell Chrys Horn
obviously doesn’t know when to
stop . . . our Facebook team still
feel fairly harassed, we have now
quietly got rid of him,” she said.
Mr Russell said everyone, part
of a community, has got a different
opinion and it wasn’t right for a
group of administrators to decide
what people should see or read.
“In a roundabout way, you
could say it is an abuse of power
because they are dictating to
others what they can and cannot
read about the community.”
But Dr Horn said the group
could not be seen as dictators.
“We have a responsibility to
manage this page and people are
voting with their feet in terms
of participating on it . . . nearly
10,000 people are active on it.”
Mr Russell was removed from
the Halswell Community Group
when he posted a mobile phone
number online.
He had helped a group of men
stranded in Greta Valley with a flat
tyre by allowing them to borrow
his spare. One of the men gave him
his phone number and promised to
return the spare tyre the next day.
But nothing eventuated and Mr
Russell’s calls were blocked.
To pressure the man, he asked
members of the Halswell Community
Group to phone the
number and ask for the wheel’s
return. It was returned after
several weeks.
Dr Horn said: “It is not legal to
post somebody’s phone number
and to get complete strangers
to ring them up on your behalf
when there is no evidence that
what you said is what went. That
is harassment.”
Mr Russell said it was not
harassment, it was asking for a
favour from the community.
Since starting his own Facebook
page, Mr Russell, who has lived
in Halswell, has been asked by
several residents to run for mayor
for the elections in October.
“I am seriously thinking about
putting my name in the ballot
. . . Tim Shadbolt does it, he is all
right. I like him,” he said.
Dr Horn said while she
wouldn’t vote for Mr Russell,
he would be very good at
campaigning and if the public
wanted a mayor who knew how
to make a “loud noise,” he could
do it.
Historic lodge
Dry ground poses injury risk
to be repaired
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
ONE OF the city’s oldest domestic
buildings, located on Racecourse
Rd, will be able to be lived in again
after being unoccupied for about
four years.
The city council will carry out
earthquake repairs on the historical
Chokebore Lodge.
Built in the 1850s, the lodge was
sold to horse trainer and breeder
Henry Redwood, who was later
dubbed the father of New Zealand
racing.
Though Mr Redwood remained
in Nelson, horses were trained at
Chokebore by jockey and trainer
Edward Cutts.
City council capital delivery
community manager Darren
Moses said while a contractor
needs to be engaged to provide
a programme on the repairs, the
preliminary date for handover is
October next year.
Following the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, the previous tenant
was required to leave as the building
was below 34 per cent New
Building Standard.
There was a severe failing of the
western and northern cob walls
and repair work is required to
the other cob walls but to a lesser
extent.
RELIEF IS under way for the
bone dry McCormacks Bay
sports field.
The city council has fixed the
broken irrigation system which
led to the field deteriorating over
the summer.
But the fix has come too late
for Sumner Rugby Football Club
which wanted to use the ground
for its pre-season training.
Rugby development officer
Riki Tahere was envious of
Ferrymead Bays FC’s luscious
training pitch at Barnett Park.
“If you were comparing apples
with apples, our one would be a
bit of a rotten one,” he said.
Mr Tahere said the
McCormacks Bay sports field
was dry and solid posing a
potential injury risk.
He suspected the field had
not been watered for six months
before city council completed
repairs of the irrigation system
and watered the fields last week.
However, city council manager
of community parks Al Hardy
said it was difficult to know
how long the issues with the
irrigation system had existed.
Mr Hardy said the field would
be included in the annual
sports field autumn renovation
programme that is scheduled to
Mr Tahere said the field was
currently not in any state to train
on.
“We can run on it but it is just
an injury waiting to happen,
whether it is soft tissue or a
concussion from the hard
ground,” Mr Tahere said.
Mr Tahere said the condition
of the field has been a major
disruption to their pre-season
with their season set to start at
the end of this month.
“As McCormacks Bay got
worse we were constantly
changing venues between South
Hagley and Malvern Park at
the last minute which has really
impacted our numbers.”
Mr Tahere said they
Beach access one step further forward
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Louis Day
THE FIRST set of permanent
access steps between the planned
Coastal Pathway and Sumner
beach have been completed.
Work on the second steps
started at the end of February.
City council transport
planning and delivery manager
Lynette Ellis said work on the
4m-wide Coastal Pathway
would start this month once the
rock revetment wall had been
completed.
One crew is currently
working on the Shag Rock
end of the rock revetment
wall towards Gollans Point,
and another crew is working
from the Sumner Surf
Lifesaving Club towards the
other crew.
The rock revetment wall
has been designed to provide
coastal protection to Main Rd,
as well as to support the Coastal
Pathway which will run along
the top.
“The asphalt path will
run between Shag Rock and
Gollans Point, and will then
transition to a boardwalk along
the front of the car park and
the Sumner Surf Lifesaving
Club where it connects with the
EASY ACCESS: Sumner resident Kate Livingston walks up the new beach steps.
existing memorial walkway,” she
said.
Landscaping, planting and
lighting improvements are also
part of the project which is on
schedule to be completed by mid-
October.
The cost of this section of
the Coastal Pathway project
is approximately $6 million.
Once complete the pathway will
run between Ferrymead Bridge
and Scarborough Beach in
Sumner.
The sections between
Ferrymead Bridge and Redcliffs
have been completed and are
operational.
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board member
Darrell Latham said he
was delighted to see things
progressing.
“I am aware of some
complaints from locals who have
found accessing the beach at
Shag Rock corner difficult during
the current development phase.
Progress is being made and it
will be great to have beach access
restored at Shag rock corner,” he
said.
Community board changes on horizon
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Louis Day
WHOLESALE changes loom for
the Banks Peninsula Community
Board.
Five members of the board
may not stand in October’s local
body elections due to concerns
over the money board members
receive and the time pressures
they face.
Chairwoman Pam Richardson,
and members Jed O’Donoghue,
Janis Haley and John McLister
told Southern View they are
unlikely to run in the next
election, while Felix Dawson said
he has not made a commitment
to run yet.
Tori Peden said she plans to
run again while newly-appointed
deputy chairman Tyrone Fields
said he would run if he was
selected.
The pay rates for the mayor,
city councillors and community
board members are currently set
by the Remuneration Authority
using a population-based
model, so boards in areas with
bigger populations get better
remuneration.
Banks Peninsula board
members – excluding the chair,
deputy chair and city councillors
– receive $9670 a year.
That is less than half the
$24,098 paid to Halswell-
STAY OR GO: The Banks Peninsula Community Board – which is made up of Andrew Turner,
Felix Dawson, Janis Haley, Jed O’Donoghue, John McLister, Pam Richardson, Tori Peden and
Tyrone Fields – may have some new faces after the local body elections in October.
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board members.
Ms Richardson is paid
$19,342, while Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton chairman Mike Mora
is paid $48,196.
City council secretary Jo Daly
said the Remuneration Authority
has indicated it would be taking a
new approach following the local
body elections this year.
However, Remuneration
Authority director Mike Kunz
said no decisions regarding the
remuneration of community board
members had been made yet.
Rev McLister said he will not
be run again due to the lack of
remuneration for members.
“It is simply the wrong
mechanism to judge what a
Banks Peninsula Community
Board member has to do. We
have big problems, we are bigger
than the city and we have to
travel more than anyone else,”
Rev McLister said.
Deputy mayor and
Banks Peninsula councillor
Andrew Turner agreed the
population-based model was
not an appropriate system of
remunerating board members.
“It makes the assumption
that the work of a community
board member is directly
proportionate to the number of
people that they represent and
fails to address the issues for a
place like the Banks Peninsula,”
he said.
Ms Richardson also did not
support the population-basedmodel
for remuneration and
said she is stepping down after
nine years because she wants
to spend more time with her
family.
“My reason for standing
down is that I have done three
terms and I want to spend time
with my family and grandson,
which I have not been able to
do as much as I would like,” she
said.
Mr O’Donogue, who can
sometimes work 40-50 hours
a week as a train driver for
KiwiRail, said he would be
stepping down due to his
commitments on the community
board costing him 20 days of
annual leave a year.
Mr O’Donoghue also said the
current remuneration rate was a
“barricade to democracy.”
“It is almost a realm exclusively
for the independently wealthy
or semi-retired, which is not
representative of the whole
community,” he said.
Ms Richardson said if board
members were better remunerated
it would open up the role to a
wider range of people.
“We need to look at the
remuneration model so we can
encourage the young ones to
come forward.”
AFTER A lifetime of low
self-esteem and a fear of injuries,
Jennine White felt unfit,
vulnerable and afraid to work
out.
Now the 33-year-old
performance reporting analyst
will take part in the 6km
City2Surf run on March 24
feeling better than ever.
Mrs White decided to focus on
her health in November after a
visit to her doctor to talk about
a shoulder injury turned into a
discussion about how her lack
of fitness was affecting her wellbeing.
Her doctor recommended
the ‘green prescription’, a free
programme which offers advice
from a physical activity coach.
She received a plan from her
coach Olivia Maisey and gained
the confidence to participate
in the City2Surf after she was
encouraged to see a personal
trainer, get injury rehabilitation
and see a life coach.
Mrs White is now positive she
can push herself to do the 6km
event if she alternates between a
brisk walk and a jog to take care
of her injury.
While she has finished with
the green prescription, she
said Miss Maisey has been like
her “cheerleader”. She said her
personal trainer, life coach,
family and friends have all helped
her to stay motivated.
“People like me need someone
in our corner and someone to
help us fight through to get a
better lifestyle,” she said.
Mrs White said she is focussed
on her well-being rather
than losing weight, and feels
“amazing” because of it.
“My mental health is so much
better, I have reduced anxiety
and sleep so well. I feel like I’m
MOTOR-CYCLISTS hooning
along the Southshore estuary
edge and through popular red
zone walking tracks are putting
lives in danger.
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board deputy chairman Tim
Sintes said it is an accident
waiting to happen, but there
is currently no signage to say
motor-cycles are banned in the
areas.
Land Information New Zealand,
which is responsible for the
red zone, agreed motor-cycles
should not be ridden in the area.
However, Mr Sintes has been
asking LINZ to install “no motor-cycle”
signage for six years
and nothing has been done.
LINZ’s Christchurch land and
property group manager Jeremy
Barr said a staff member was on
site on Friday looking at options
for installing ‘no motor-cycle’
signage. He said LINZ will continue
its conversation with the
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board.
Mr Sintes hopes these
conversations will lead to action,
but said he is disappointed it has
taken so long for new signage to
be seriously considered.
Mr Sintes said if nothing is
done to stop motor-cyclists
riding through the areas “there’s
going to be fisticuffs.”
“There’s been a bit of an
it’s just a bit of a concern that
residents might take things into
their own hands and it might get
out of control.”
“It’s a very, very popular
walkway and cycleway with
families and, if you get a motor
bike hooning down there,
it’s very dangerous and then
occasionally we get one hooning
down to the estuary.”
Said Mr Barr: “We are aware
of the issue of motor-cyclists
using walking tracks in the
Southshore red zone and estuary
area. We have had complaints
about this in the past.”
Mr Barr said LINZ has put
measures in place to try and stop
the problem, but they had not
been effective.
“There is signage in place that
says no unauthorised access, and
our security guards regularly
patrol that area. They have in
the past asked motor-cyclists to
move on. This, unfortunately,
has only temporarily addressed
the issue.”
Mr Sintes said some motorcyclists
had intimidated walkers
in the past when they had been
asked to get off their bikes.
“Invariably they get pretty
aggressive . . . it’s not pleasant for
anyone. They went down there
for a walk, not an argument.”
He said it shouldn’t have to
come to this and LINZ should
act on the issue now.
ALAN HICKMAN was sick of
constantly being woken up by the
alarms going off at the fire station
a couple of doors down from his
house.
So the then 27-year-old decided
he might as well sign up for
volunteer service at the old New
Brighton Fire Station.
Now at age 68, Mr Hickman
will soon retire after more than
41 years of fighting fires.
Starting off as a volunteer in
1977, Mr Hickman remained at
his job as a property officer for
the Education Department (now
the Ministry of Education).
In 1981, he began moving
up the ranks as a volunteer,
becoming a senior firefighter and
then station officer in 1994.
Then in 1999, Mr Hickman
became the volunteer district
support officer for the New
Brighton station, in Hawke St,
which was a paid role, while he
also continued as a volunteer.
He was joined by long-time
friend Dave Chivers in the role.
In 2008, he became deputy
chief at the station.
Then in 2012, he moved into
the Christchurch City Fire
Station metro area office, where
he supported four brigades –
New Brighton, Brooklands,
Sumner and Lyttelton.
It wasn’t until 2013 that he
retired from being a volunteer
and continued as a career staff
member.
“I decided that working 24
hours a day was crazy.”
He can still recall the first ever
house fire he entered on New
Brighton Rd and admits it was
“pretty neat.”
“I was fascinated by it,
I didn’t know what to expect,” he
said.
“I managed to get a direct
hit on the home’s power board
with my hose. It exploded and
there was a blinding blue flash. I
thought, wow, this is what it is all
about.”
Ample training had prepared
Mr Hickman for this moment,
particularly the ‘safe person
concept’.
“You risk a little to save a lot.
You don’t risk a lot to save a
little.”
Mr Hickman was buying
lunch on Bower Ave when the
February 22, 2011, earthquake
hit. He raced back to the station
and the crew “self-responded”
the old New
Brighton Fire
Station.
and headed to North Beach Fish
Supply, where the roof had caved
in.
The owner had got out alive,
luckily. Little did Mr Hickman
know, his home on Waitaki Ave,
Bexley, had been destroyed by
liquefaction and was structurally
unsound.
“It was stuffed. So my family
and I moved into the station
. . . it was fun, it was different, but
we had things highly organised.”
Mr Hickman slept on the
floor in the storeroom of the
station, which was running on
a small amount of power from a
generator and no water.
The crew’s main jobs were to
ensure buildings were made safe
and chimneys were knocked
down. The generosity of people
during the time “amazed him.”
“People would stop us
everywhere just to give us food or
baking.”
While fighting fires, Mr
Hickman has rescued numerous
horses, cows, rabbits, cats and
dogs and has seen some “pretty
“You just have to get on with it
and deal with the job,” he said.
During the devastating 2017
Port Hills fires, Mr Hickman
worked behind the scenes,
ensuring all brigades were
supported with the resources
they needed.
Mr Chivers and Mr Hickman
became friends when they met
as volunteers and have fought
“thousands of fires since.”
“At one point, we were
attending more than 500 fires
a year. I’ve made a lifetime of
friends. I don’t want to mention
any more names, I’ll miss
someone out and then I’ll hear
about it,” he said.
A career highlight was in 2002,
when Mr Hickman received a
Gold Star Award for 25 years of
service. Although he will retire
soon, Mr Hickman plans to
continue volunteering for the
New Brighton brigade, now based
at the Anzac Fire Station on
Anzac Drive, doing operational
support.
Family’s struggle to get ballerina to New York
• By Julia Evans
WOOLSTON’S Mileena Allan-
Griffiths wants to become a
professional ballerina and her
parents aren’t letting anything
get in her way – not even their
financial struggle.
Her mother and father,
Marianne Allan and Richard
Griffiths, have maxed out credit
cards and are spending
all their spare time
fundraising in a bid to get
their 11-year-old to New
York, not once but twice.
Mr Griffiths is working
70 hours a week at his
business just to make
ends meet. Mrs Allan has
taken up an extra
Marianne
Allan
cleaning job, which Mileena and
her 10-year-old sister Arawyn help
out with.
“They’re really good at cleaning
toilets,” she said.
But Mrs Allan said the family
would do anything to raise
the $31,000 needed to get their
daughter to New York. Mileena is
one of four girls from Canterbury
Ballet selected to compete at the
Youth America Grand Prix Ballet
competition next month.
Alongside Mileena, Sonia
Woods, Ashley Woods and
Poppie Belle Hollander were
selected from Canterbury Ballet.
Canterbury Ballet director
Taisia Missevich said it was
“phenomenal” to have four dancers
accepted. “Last year only three
were accepted into the finals from
the whole of Australia. We are
feeling very blessed having four
from one school accepted.”
The competition is the most
elite in the world – dubbed the
Olympics of ballet – with about
10,000 dancers entering, but
only three per cent accepted
worldwide.
Another 12 dancers
from the school have been
accepted into programmes,
and Missevich said it was
amazing having girls going to
companies all over the world.
Mileena will head back to
New York to attend the American
Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive
workshop for seven weeks in June.
“We’re sacrificing a lot for her
to get there,” Mrs Allan said. “But
we’re going to make it happen.”
The first $9000 trip for 12
days from April 10-22 has been
put on an interest-free credit
card. They found the cheapest
accommodation available at
$100USD a night.
“It’s a two and a half hour
trip into New York where the
competition is,” Mrs Allan said.
The second trip will be for two
months, from June 24 to July 6,
and will come at a cost of more
than $22,000. A pair of pointe
shoes worn by ballerinas also costs
more than $600.
“We’ve done a couple of
sausage sizzles, sold daffodils
and cupcakes. The girls help out
wherever they can. My husband
is working 70 hour weeks at the
moment. He didn’t get into bed
until 4.30am yesterday,” Mrs Allan
said.
“But with the girls, I always
thought if I could find their
passion then life would be easy for
them . . . it’s worth it.”
Mileena received a $1000 grant
through the Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
and the family is in the process of
applying for funding through Ngai
Tahu.
She has been doing ballet since
she was seven. She has lessons five
days a week and attends private
classes. However, she does less
than half the classes that her peers
do because the family is unable to
afford extra lessons.
“She does 10 hours a week of
lessons, where most girls her age
do well over 20.”
Mileena said when she found
out she had been accepted to go to
New York, she was “really excited.”
“I think it would be amazing to
be a ballerina and perform for lots
of people.”
