Biodiversity
protection
group formed
A WORKING group has been
formed to protect the district’s
biodiversity.
The district council’s
biodiversity programmes are
guided and empowered by
legislation and policies, as well as
the Selwyn District Plan, which
is currently being reviewed.
As part of the review, a
biodiversity working group has
been established, made up of key
stakeholders and landowners
with an active interest in the
protection of ecosystems and
indigenous biodiversity.
Said district council biodiversity
coordinator Andrew
Spanton: “Our priority is the
protection of existing biodiversity
– particularly native plants.
Indigenous biodiversity is generally
considered more important
than planted biodiversity as it
contains the original assemblage
of plants, insects and soil biota.”
Mr Spanton works with
landowners, community groups,
local and central government
agencies, and other stakeholders
to protect and restore indigenous
biodiversity. A major part of
his role is to run the district
council’s significant natural area
programme.
A VOLUNTARY organisation
helping those in need is
celebrating 40 years of service.
Community Care Lincoln was
established with the help of the
Lincoln Rotary Club in 1979
to provide ‘meals on wheels’ in
rural areas.
Former Community Care
chairman and volunteer for 17
years, Pat Nicholas, said the
organisation has about 100
dedicated volunteers and it
couldn’t run without them.
“The things we do, meals on
wheels is a major one we do five
days a week. Delivery meals to
those who are still in their own
homes and are incapable or don’t
have the ability to put together
a good meal to keep them
sustained in their own home,”
Mr Nicholas said.
“Another core value of
Community Care is to keep
people out of hospitals as they
are more happy and comfortable
living in their own homes,” he
said.
Elderly people living alone are
most often in need of help.
“That [elderly care] was the
basis of setting it up. But we’ve
extended into helping families,
young and old, new residents to
Lincoln who are moving in and
need to find their way around the
area,” Mr Nicholas said.
The biggest changes since
being set up in 1979 has been its
premises.
When Community Care first
opened, it was run out of a rented
facility on Williams St, Lincoln,
before moving to a purpose-built
facility on Gerald St in 1980.
Community Care then
moved to its current district
council-built facility on
Lyttelton St in 2013.
The organisation has been
largely unaffected by the
population boom in the district,
Mr Nicholas said.
“The biggest challenge has
been to get the word out to the
new people in Lincoln and the
surrounding area that we’re there
to service for them.”
To mark 40 years, Community
Care will hold an open day on
Sunday.
