Bill Rodger published his series Rancho Cucamunga Kids, which was inspired by stories he told his nine grandchildren on his farm. “Growing up and to this day I struggle to read,” the 71-year-old said. “So instead of reading stories to my grand kids, I prefer to tell them crazy made-up tales about our adventures on the farm. These quickly became a real treat, to the point that my wife encouraged me to write them all down,” Mr Rodger said. Special mention was given to two of Mr Rodger’s grandchildren, William, 8, and Valentina, 5, who lost their mother Nina [Mr Rodger’s daughter in-law] to cancer earlier this year. Her heartbreaking battle with the disease was covered in Selwyn Times. Once they were written, his family suggested the next logical step was to enlist the help of local illustrator Rebecca Gibbs, then try to publish his stories. But the publishers weren’t interested. Undeterred, Mr Rodger self-published 100 copies at a time, then took his books to the big distributors. “They said the same thing PUBLISHED: Hororata author Bill Rodger with his grandchildren Valentina, 5, and William, 8. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER though: ‘Nice books, no market’.” But Mr Rodger was hearing something different – school teachers and principals urged him to keep writing. It then became his mission to identify an organisation with a record for caring. “And I remembered New World’s Little Gardens [vegetable and herb grow kit giveaways] and the massive fun and educational impact of that, and so for me to approach New World was an absolute no-brainer.” Eventually he won over New World South Island group manager Ross Martin via a tough critic. “I took some of his books home and gave them to my sevenyear-old daughter and she loved them,” said Mr Martin. “So, we went back to Bill and started talking, and now we’re giving away thousands of them – or 37,800 to be exact – in all 42 New World stores throughout the South Island.” •To celebrate the book series release, New World shoppers will receive one of his nine books when they spend $100 or more. The man in his 20s, who escaped without injury, said he was unfamiliar with the snaking bend. He was travelling to Lincoln. PHOTO: BARRY CLARKE Plan to control quarry dust with water criticised • By Anan Zaki WATER CANONS and carts could be used to control dust emissions at Fulton Hogan’s proposed quarry near Weedons. Details on dust and air quality featured in a 54-page document presented to Environment Canterbury and the district council last week. The information was provided after the regional and district councils requested more details about Fulton Hogan’s plans to quarry at a 170ha site bordered by Curraghs, Dawsons, Jones and Maddisons Rds. Weedons quarry opponent Simon Moore said using water canons and carts would be a waste of water. Mr Moore is still against the idea of a quarry near Weedons and Templeton. “They are going to require a huge amount of water to do that [mitigate dust],” he said. Dust from trucks is also another issue for quarry opponents. Mr Moore referred to trucks Simon Moore leaving the Miners Rd quarry to highlight concerns over dust from trucks. “The issue is when trucks leave the quarry, they’ve been water blasted, and as they go onto the road, they’re leaving deposits of dirt on the road. And as it drives that turns into dust,” Mr Moore said. “Thursday morning after a heavy dew, I was going past there [Miners Rd quarry] at nine o’clock in the morning and you could hardly see the trucks on the road for the dust coming off the road,” he said. Mr Moore said “millions” of litres of water would be wasted on dust mitigation if the quarry is approved. Fulton Hogan also addressed questions about traffic to and from the proposed quarry. Based on modelling, it said most of the traffic would be east-bound to and from Christchurch. The $195 million stage two of the Southern Motorway is anticipated to carry most of the traffic. Local News Now In Brief Fire rages, homes at risk WHITECLIFFS CRASH A car crashed into a property at Whitecliffs in the early hours of Saturday. Coalgate chief fire officer Phillip Shaw said the cause of the single vehicle crash on Whitecliffs Rd at 3am is under investigation. Mr Shaw said the sole occupant, a teenage boy, was taken to Christchurch Hospital for observation. GARAGE FIRE Firefighters were called to a garage fire in Southbridge on Saturday at 11.46am. The fire was at a residential property on Wilson St. It was contained in about 15min, said Southbridge chief fire officer Donald McMillan. The cause of the fire is being investigated. The garage had “moderate” damage and there was no vehicle in it at the time, Mr McMillan said.
