he 4 th annual Dauphin King’s Ukrainian Night that
T was held on Saturday January 26, 2019 was a resounding
success. It is hard to imagine that this
small city of 8,000 residents located in the Parkland region
of Manitoba, packed in 1900 spectators into the Credit
Union Place.
Ryan Rauliuk, manager of Ruff’s Furniture in Dauphin, who
is the main force behind the Ukrainian Night explained,
“The neat thing that I noticed this year was that droves
of people were coming from Winnipeg, Brandon and Regina,
just for this event. In fact, one gentleman flew in from
Kelowna, British Columbia just to witness this spectacle.”
Ukrainian Night by far is the best attended home game for
the Dauphin Kings. Playing in front of nearly 200O fans is
highlight for many of the players. Recent addition, Ethan
Slobodzian who grew up in Hamilton, Ontario was looking
forward to Ukrainian Night.
“I am so excited for tomorrow. It was one of the selling
points for me coming here,” said Slobodzian. “ I saw some
of videos and it just looks incredible. I can’t wait to be a
part of it.”
Ukrainian Night is a truly family event, providing entertainment
for all age groups. Many aspects for the rich
Ukrainian culture were front and centre. Ukrainian dancers
welcomed the attendees in the lobby. The “The Drifting
Kozaks” Band filled the arena entrance with lively
traditional music. During the intermission the audience
was entertained by the Kulbassa Throw and mattress races
to name a few of the unusual and exciting events.
Ryan Rauliuk added,
“Overall the highlight of the entire night was seeing each
and every person with a smile on their face having a great
time!”
Veteran Dauphin King player who hails from Dauphin, Bradyn
Smelski, prior to the January 26th game, commented,
“Dauphin is a centre for Ukrainian culture and we have
make this (Ukrainian Night) happen, and do our best make
it special. ”
