personalised weight<br />
management solutions<br />
In November 2018, Dr Jonie Girouard<br />
and her husband Dr Michael Girouard,<br />
opened The Girouard Centre in<br />
Silverstream, Kaiapoi, dedicated to weight<br />
management and wellness.<br />
The couple came to New Zealand three<br />
years ago from the United States, where<br />
Dr Michael was one of the country’s<br />
most experienced, leading bariatricians<br />
and Dr Jonie practised as an obesity<br />
specialist. Already managing six other<br />
centres internationally via the internet,<br />
they wanted to open a dedicated weight<br />
management centre in the Christchurch<br />
region, where they would treat people with<br />
weight management issues on a completely<br />
individual basis.<br />
Dr Jonie has a particular interest in<br />
lipoedema, a condition that affects around<br />
11 per cent of the female population, but<br />
is often confused with fibromyalgia and/or<br />
obesity due to the lack of awareness of this<br />
condition.<br />
As she explains, lipoedema is a painful,<br />
progressive condition that causes swelling<br />
in the hips, buttock and legs, and as it is not<br />
related to excess calorie intake it can’t be<br />
treated with the usual dieting and exercise<br />
regime.<br />
“It is a complicated disease that often<br />
develops in families, and if left untreated<br />
it will progress, often leading to excess<br />
body weight and obesity due to the lack of<br />
exercise through decreased mobility,” she<br />
says.<br />
Patients with lipoedema seeking help at<br />
the Girouard Centre are initially assessed<br />
to determine family history and lifestyle<br />
and are provided with basic knowledge<br />
of lipoedema to help them understand<br />
the condition. An individual tailored<br />
programme covering meal planning and<br />
appropriate exercise is provided, and<br />
the patient is often referred to Burwood<br />
Hospital for compression and lymphatic<br />
manual drainage therapy.<br />
“The services we offer are unique<br />
in New Zealand,” Dr Jonie says.<br />
The Girouard Centre offers nonsurgical<br />
treatment for all types of<br />
weight management problems,<br />
with every person receiving an<br />
individualised treatment plan<br />
according to their needs, so they can<br />
achieve their goals.<br />
Personal goals may include reaching<br />
their ideal weight, reducing their<br />
cholesterol levels or preventing diabetes.<br />
Avoiding the yo-yo weight gain and loss<br />
that some people wrestle with is equally<br />
important in weight maintenance and<br />
optimal health, Dr Jonie says.<br />
The centre is open for consultation<br />
on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and<br />
appointments can be made by calling<br />
