Street rod racing in<br />
Christchurch this Easter<br />
For just the third time in 30 years, the Street Rod Nationals will be held in Christchurch<br />
over Easter weekend and this year’s, Classic Cover Insurance N.Z. Street Rod<br />
Nationals promises to be a great event for hot rod and other motoring enthusiasts.<br />
The New Zealand Hot Rod Association (NZHRA)<br />
formed in Auckland, in the early sixties. It is the<br />
governing body of over 100 clubs around the country.<br />
The country’s first Hot Rod magazine was published<br />
back in 1967 and is still going strong today.<br />
Most countries in the world, participate in some<br />
form of hot rodding. It is a multi-billion dollar business<br />
in the United States and many local hot rodders bring<br />
totally finished cars in from that country. Thousands of<br />
enthusiasts also go to America each year to visit events<br />
where more than 10,000 cars may be competing, and<br />
to buy specialised parts not available in New Zealand.<br />
By the early 1970s, clubs were able to apply to hold<br />
the Street Rod Nationals and both the NZHRA and<br />
Hot Rod magazine have helped grow this hobby to an<br />
amazing standard in New Zealand. Some of the near<br />
perfect hot rod examples can cost over $150,000.<br />
Since 1990, the Nationals have only been held twice<br />
in Christchurch: the hugely successful 1994 QEII event<br />
which had 360 cars and over 1,000 entrants; and the<br />
2001 event held at the Riccarton Racecourse.<br />
This year’s event will again be held at Riccarton<br />
Racecourse (Racecourse Road, Christchurch) over<br />
Easter weekend. Public day is on Saturday, 20th April<br />
from 9.30am through to 3pm. The cost will be $10 per<br />
adult with children under 15 free.<br />
Car enthusiasts who have not entered will be<br />
able to park in a ‘preferred parking’ area especially<br />
saved for their cool pride and joy.<br />
Major sponsor for the nationals, Classic Cover<br />
Insurance N.Z. will have representatives on site to<br />
provide insurance quotes for cars. They promise to<br />
be very competitive. NZHRA will also have people<br />
available to answer any questions you may have. In<br />
addition, there will be many stalls including those<br />
selling food and drink.<br />
In addition to the show, entrants will compete<br />
in driving events, a car trial, museum visits and<br />
night time functions. So far, only a few local cars<br />
have entered with the majority of entrants coming<br />
from the North Island, including Gary Martin who<br />
is driving down from Hamilton in his steel 1932<br />
Ford 3 Window Coupe with supercharged Ardun<br />
engine.<br />
The Grand National champion hot rods from<br />
the previous Christchurch events will also be on<br />
display. Both are exactly the same as they were<br />
when first built. There are also plans to have a few<br />
partially built rods on show, demonstrating what is<br />
involved in their construction.<br />
