CONCORD Garden Club will host its 65th Autumn 

Flower, Vegetable and Floral Art Show on 

the weekend of April 6-7 at Concord Community 

Centre, 1A Gipps Street, Concord. 

The Show is very traditional and competitive with 

judges from the NSW Royal Horticultural Society 

looking for excellence in the exhibits. It will be officially 

opened on Saturday April 6 by George Hoad, 

President of the Garden Clubs of Australia at 12.30pm. 

Concord Community Centre is filled with roses, orchids, 

pot plants, fruit and vegetables as well as floral 

art arrangements - a joy to behold. 

Robyn Bible, the Geranium Lady, has a stall with an 

interesting array of geraniums on offer while the Club 

has a Plant stall with lots of small and larger plants 

for sale. 

There’ll be a White Elephant stall with a wide range 

of second hand goods including books, Christmas 

decorations, kitchenware and more. The Ladies Auxiliary 

of the Concord Hostel will provide refreshments 

- lovely sandwiches and tasty homemade cakes. 

Show will be open Saturday from 10.30am to 4pm and 

Sunday between 9am and 3pm. The building is an old

Even Blind Freddie would’ve known there was an election on last Saturday with all the avenues of electoral signs and banners displayed outside polling stations and booths.

1st North Ryde Cubs won the Moocooboolah District Shield at 

last Friday night’s Moocooboolah District Rally at Meadowbank 

Park. 1st East Ryde Scouts took out the football honours. District

Team JA’ doing the World’s Greatest Shave 

Supporting the Leukaemia Foundation became even more personal for me 

when my own staff member got struck down with aggressive Stage 4 Non- 

Hodgkin’s Lymphoma 18 months ago, right in the middle of my 100km walk 

through Bennelong for the Foundation! 

Brendan got dangerously ill in a matter of weeks, thankfully upon diagnosis 

he immediately started chemotherapy (medicare and PBS funded) and 

received support from the Leukaemia Foundation. 

Brendan has made a full recovery. To celebrate his 12 months back at work 

Brendan and other members of my staff will join me on Friday to have our 

locks shaved off!

Endangered wildlife 

at Ivanhoe Estate 

Dear Sir, 

City of Ryde Council 

is to be congratulated 

for taking action on the 

proposed development 

at Ivanhoe Estate, as 

reported in last week’s 

TWT. 

As a long-time local resident 

I have been pleased 

to see how the section 

of forest between the estate 

and Epping Road remained 

unspoilt as an effective 

buffer between the 

road and the existing lowrise 

housing units. 

It is a Sydney Turpentine 

Ironbark Forest. All 

such forests are classified 

as Endangered Ecological 

Communities because 

only 0.5 percent of 

these forest areas remain. 

The NSW Biodiversity 

Offset Policy for Major Projects 

cannot make amends 

for destruction of any part 

of this forest because it 

would further reduce the 

remaining total. 

The development plans 

specify an access road 

to cut through this forest, 

which will destroy a large 

section and also break up 

the wildlife corridor. 

Even if the development 

goes ahead, this planned 

access road is unnecessary. 

The plans also specify 

two-way access to Lyon 

Park Road, so traffic wishing 

to enter the estate

whole heartedly agree 

with him. 

I have been saying for 

years that we need to 

either dam more or put 

pipelines in to harness 

some of the floods waters 

particularly in Northern 

Queensland which will 

safeguard the population 

against flood devastation, 

the loss of life, the government 

against future 

costs and bring life back 

to the Darling /Murray river 

system and many other 

drought stricken areas. 

I have seen the Perth 

to Kalgoorlie pipeline 

which goes for about 700 

or more kms, so if water 

can be piped here it can 

be done in many other 

places. 

These future pipes 

could be put underground 

to safeguard collapse 

and be much more aesthetically 

pleasing ! Also it 

would provide many more 

jobs!! 

Governments please 

take a stand and ensure 

the water future for generations 

in this drought/ 

flood stricken country of 

ours.

Vote counting

regarding the vote 

count for the Legislative 

Council. 

The NSW Electoral 

Commission is aware of 

a media release jointly 

issued by a number of 

minor parties and independent 

candidates today 

regarding the count 

process for the Legislative 

Council in the 2019 

NSW State election. 

In early 2018, the NSW 

Electoral Commissioner 

determined that seven 

Legislative Council 

groups would be counted 

concurrently with the 

Legislative Assembly on 

election night, as part of 

the first preference count 

for both Houses. 

The seven groups were 

chosen on the basis that 

they currently, or previously 

had, held seats in 

the Legislative Council. 

This determination was 

made in the interests of 

workplace health and 

safety and to provide 

the voters of New South 

Wales with an early indication 

of the initial Legislative 

Council count on 

election night. 

In light of these work- 

place health and safety 

considerations, if this 

change had not been 

made there would have 

been no Legislative 

Council count conducted 

on election night. 

NSW Electoral Commissioner 

John Schmidt 

said that it needs to be 

remembered that the vast 

majority of election officials 

involved in the first 

preference count process 

are temporary staff drawn 

from the general community. 

“I make no apologies for 

doing everything I can to 

provide these staff with 

a safe working environment, 

which includes safe 

working hours on election 

day,” Mr Schmidt said. 

Registered parties were 

advised of this new process 

in a NSW Electoral 

Commission bulletin released 

on 11 May 2018. 

The process was further 

presented at briefings for 

registered parties which 

were conducted by the 

NSW Electoral Commission 

in June 2018 and 

November 2018. 

The change in process 

was also detailed in the 

Candidates Handbook for 

the NSW State election. 

This Handbook has 

been made available to 

all parties and candidates 

and is also available on 

the NSW Electoral Commission 

website. 

Five days before the 

election, on 18 March 

2019 one registered party 

enquired with the NSW 

Electoral Commission 

whether it was possible 

for the process to be 

changed. 

The party was advised 

that, as all relevant policies 

and procedures, including 

training for election 

officials, were already 

in place, the NSW Electoral 

Commission was 

unable to change the process 

at this late stage. 

Allocating additional 

resources at this time in 

an attempt to change the 

current process would 

lead to disruption and 

confusion in count centres 

and could result in a 

delay in determining the 

election result. 

The check count of 

the 5 million Legislative 

Council ballot papers 

commenced on Sunday, 

24 March. 


Commission will, from 

Tuesday, 26 March 2019, 

progressively report to its 

website the check count 

results for all 20 groups 

and all 346 candidates 

that appear below the line 

on the Legislative Council 

ballot paper. 

It is important to note 

that the change has not 

affected the estimated 

date of the distribution of 

preferences, or the Declaration 

of Results for the 

Legislative Council which 

is still scheduled to occur 

on Friday, 12 April. 

The joint media release 

sought information concerning 

‘the process undertaken 

to secure the 

‘Other’ ballot papers from 

interference’.

Sharing childhood memories and 

family stories of precious dolls 

WE STARTED VSandO 

(Very Special and Original) 

Doll Rescue as an 

idea to bring precious 

things from the past into 

the present, and give 

them a life into the future. 

Our first project was 

to rewrite vintage 

knitting patterns, which 

we thought were too 

beautiful to be allowed 

to fade into history. 

The patterns also 

represented two of 

the key pillars of our 

philosophy – the 

making of hand-crafted 

items and the use of 

traditional skills that 

were handed down 

through generations. 

At our home in 

Hunters Hill we began 

with ‘pop-up shops’ 

in the yard and in the 

lounge room. 

At our first sale we 

dressed some secondhand 

dolls in handknitted 

clothes to 

showcase what could 

be done with knitting. 

The dolls were very 

popular so we dressed 

some more. 

We wondered if it 

would be possible to 

rescue dolls, do them 

up and sell them on so 

that they could have 

another life. 

If people were 

interested in such a 

thing then we could 

express the third pillar 

of our philosophy – 

recycling, reclaiming 

and reusing discarded 

items.

such poor condition and 

bring home the scruffy, 

the dirty, the tangled 

and the broken. 

We clean them, fix 

them and dress them so 

that they are ready to be 

re-loved. 

Even the unfixable are 

used with recycled bits 

and pieces and made 

into new things.

doll rescuing we have 

learned many new 

skills, to add to those 

that had been passed 

down to us. 

At our stalls we are 

often asked if we repair 

dolls. 

So now we do. Our 

doll rescuing project 

has been extended 

again. 

We love this work

our skills creatively to 

give things another life 

that would otherwise 

be thrown away and 

love the challenge of

Forget the budget, 

just repair our paths 

HUNTERS HILL councillors have voted by five votes to two 

against a motion to adopt a policy to fix broken footpaths and 

potholes. 

The motion was put 

by Liberal councillors 

Zac Miles and Ben 

Collins during last 

week’s council meeting 

and saw them 

argue that many footpaths 

and roads are 

in such a poor condition 

that immediate 

repair should be undertaken, 

regardless 

of costs. 

“We want to bring 

things up to an acceptable 

standard, 

not an excellent 

standard,” Clr Collins 

said. 

“But I don’t think 

we can balance the 

budget and bring 

things up to this 

standard when twenty 

per cent of these 

assets are in a very 

poor state.” 

Councillor Collins 

believes that a balanced 

budget is the 

priority for some 

councillors, who fear 

the state governmernt 

will force the 

council to merge with 

Ryde if it runs into 

debt. 

“These so-called independents 

are voting 

as a bloc and they 

have unanimously 

decided that fixing 

our footpaths is not a 

priority,” he said. 

“Council staff are 

hamstrung by petty 

councillors that prioritise 

their own survival 

over delivering 

for the community.” 

Independent Clr 

Ross Williams denied 

this. 

“We do have an assets 

maintenance 

register, we do have 

a list and we do have 

a sound system,” he 

said. 

“There is no evidence 

to support 

what the two Liberal 

councillors are saying 

and I would be 

surprised if this is 

not a problem faced 

by all Sydney councils 

because of a lack 

of funding from the 

Liberal state government.” 

Councillor Collins is 

standing by his words. 

“This is a major safety 

issue and it’s been 

ignored for too long,” 

he said. 

“Many of our residents 

are elderly and 

having trip hazards on 

footpaths is simply not 

acceptable.” 

“The so-called independants 

have jointly 

decided that the best 

way to save on maintenance 

is to not do 

it.” 

He said residents

Freemasons put Hunters 

Hill Temple up for sale 

THE historic Masonic Temple in Hunters Hill is up for sale. 

Built in 1921 the double-brick 

Temple at 28 Alexandria Street 

is being sold by Belle Property 

in Hunters Hill, which hopes to 

get between $2.7 million and $3 

million from a buyer. 

Agent Simon Harrison from 

Belle Property said that although 

the Temple is not heritage listed 

and can be demolished, prospective 

buyers have expressed 

interest in retaining the building 

and redeveloping the interior. 

“There is a lot of masonic and 

local history associated with 

this site, which I respect because 

my father was a mason,” 

Mr Harrison told The Weekly 

Times. 

The Temple’s famous wartime 

Roll Of Honour is being preserved 

by the masons and is not 

included in the sale. 

“Of course, the people from 

the masonic club have taken all 

the important heritage items to 

be saved but even so you still 

feel a strong sense of history 

inside the building and the presence 

of the masons,” he said. 

The Temple has always been 

shrouded in mystery connected 

with the Freemasonry and with 

the masons who once held 

Omnes Sancti (All Holy) secret 

meetings there on every third 

Monday. 

Outside the Temple, heavy 

doors guarded by two pillars 

mark it as a sacred place, 

through which generations of 

masons once entered under 

the Freemasons’ emblem of the 

compass and set square, believed 

to represent the attributes 

of God as a celestial architect. 

The inner sanctum is famous 

for architectural and mystical 

symbols that are drawn from 

the bible and medieval freemasonry. 

Mystical Symbolism 

There are symbols that represent 

the medieval Order of 

Knights Templar. 

Stepping inside, today’s visitors 

will discover the first floor 

contains original floor boards, 

the original stage and an early 

portrait of Her Majesty The 

Queen. 

Upstairs is the ceremonial 

hall that has a carpet in Masonic 

Blue, a colour that has been 

registered under this name due 

to it’s mystical symbolism in 

Freemasonry. 

At the heart of the ceremonial 

area is a rectangular chequerboard

Parramatta News and Views 

Is old Parramatta haunted by ghosts of its spooky past? 

THE City of Parramatta Heritage Centre is promoting some of 

its historic sites as haunted houses, inhabited by some seriously 

spooky ghosts. 

One of the most reputedly 

haunted houses 

in Parramatta is Roseneath 

Cottage whose 

ghostly mist was captured 

in this 2014 photo 

(pictured) by Caroline 

Finlay. 

“Frequently it is by 

the precision of detail 

around its apparition, 

rather than its identity, 

that a ghost is known,” 

the Heritage Centre describes 

the Roseneath 

Cottage ghost. 

“Janet Templeton, a 

widow of a Scottish 

banker, migrated to 

Australia in 1829 with 

her ten children. 

“She had Roseneath 

Cottage built in 1837 

and lived there happily 

for a few years and then 

her eldest child, Margaret, 

died. 

“The ghost observed 

in Roseneath for the 

greater part of two centuries 

may be Margaret 

or it may be Janet. 

“But it is always 

dressed in grey satin, 

usually appears at three 

in the morning and is 

said to bear an inquiring 

expression and has 

been known to whistle.” 

Parramatta’s ghostly 

history can be traced 

back to colonial days 

with one documented 

ghost sighting was recorded 

in The Cumberland 

Argus on November 

19, 1926. 

The newspaper report 

verifies the sighting of a 

ghostly apparition at the 

Murray Brothers Building 

in the heart of Parramatta 

City and that it 

was witnessed by locals. 

“It does seem there 

was enough interest for 

citizens young and old 

to turn out of an evening, 

looking for an apparition 

in an upper 

window of the Murray 

Brothers building,” the 

Heritage Centre writes. 

“No one convincingly 

identified the ghostly 

figure and the whole 

episode was granted 

a natural explanation 

involving glass and reflections, 

perhaps too 

quickly ! 

“To imagine them 

there, on the corner of 

Church and Macquarie 

Streets ninety odd 

years ago, is to sense 

the space between that 

time and ours.” 

By the 1920s, there is 

a even tone of nostalgia 

in these colonial era 

ghost sightings. 

“ It seems that there 

was only a brief window 

when Parramatta could 

have generated a ghost, 

just as there was a specific 

period when it had 

bushrangers,” the Heritage 

Centre observes. 

But ghost sightings 

there were and Christmas 

Eve was the traditional 

time to tell them. 

The Argus in 1926 records 

a Christmas ghost 

tale from the early years 

of the colony related to 

a Lieutenant Eustace 

Darnley. 

“Making his way home 

from Parramatta in the 

dead of night on Christmas 

Eve, the sudden 

apparition was appropriately 

ghastly, dangling 

in bright moon 

beams from a known 

hanging tree, dancing 

and gesticulating in a 

horribly devilish manner. 

“The sole witness, 

Darnley himself, was 

found on Christmas 

morning on the verge of 

the Western Road from 

Sydney, beneath that 

bleached bough of the 

tree.” 

One explanation for 

Parramatta’s Georgian 

and Victorian era 

ghost sightings is that 

local residents back 

then were much more 

“British” and they reflected 

what renowned 

astronomer Carl Sagan 

described as the British 

“obsession with 

ghosts”. 

Even today there is a 

surprisingly widespread 

British folk belief that 

ghosts are the manifest 

souls of the dead who 

don’t know they have 

passed away. 

“These apparitions 

seem not to be aware 

of – or not able to make 

peace with – their own 

death,” the Parramatta 

Heritage Centre notes. 

“ They may be seen 

continuing quietly in the 

paths of their life or going 

about their business 

(such as ) Doug Brewer 

who worked at the Parramatta 

Telephone Exchange 

for most of his 

time on earth. 

“One night years after 

Doug’s death, two colleagues, 

Bob Palmer 

and Russell Scanlon, 

were leaving the exchange 

when Bob realised 

he had forgotten 

something and went 

back to collect it. 

“When he re-emerged 

a few minutes later he 

was extremely upset 

and told Russell that 

there was a strange figure 

working at the test 

desk. 

“The next day Bob was 

asked to describe in 

more detail the figure he 

had seen, and the details 

he gave surprised 

the Exchange staff. 

“The man he had seen 

in the deserted building, 

and whom he was able 

to describe by various

believed in ghosts but 

hardly anyone believes 

in them now.” 

“This human life has 

got to be too practical 

for such belief and most 

present day people believe 

in hardly anything 

but what is to them palpable

Ryde is about to experience a renaissance, newly re-elected Ryde MP 

Victor Dominello told The Weekly Times yesterday. 

Mr Dominello said the reelected 

Berejiklian Coalition 

government will honour all 

election promises and tens 

of millions of dollars will be 

poured into Ryde to make it a 

better place to live and work. 

“We will absolutely implement 

our vision to build the new 

schools, the new hospital, the 

new metro and we will continue 

our work to improve Victoria 

Road,” he said. 

“We are going to see a Ryde 

Renaissance.” 

Mr Dominello said he is proud 

to have won the seat in an “ethical” 

campaign that put people 

before politics. 

“As well as delivering on our 

government’s policy I will continue 

to advocate for my community

A BOLD attempt is being made to seize a $2 

million dollar sports field grant for Hunters Hill 

and have the money spent in Ryde. 

Lane Cove MP Anthony 

Roberts recently promised 

the $2 million grant for a 

synthetic turf upgrade to a 

soccer field at Gladesville 

Reserve and Hunters Hill 

councillors voted four to 

two to have council staff 

prepare a feasibility report 

on it. 

The report is expected 

to consider environmental 

impact concerns about 

synthetic turf raised by 

councillors Ross Williams 

and Jim Sanderson as well 

as likely amendments to 

the reserve’s management 

plan. 

With Hunters Hill waiting 

for the staff report, Ryde 

Clr Roy Maggio has seized 

the opportunity to have the 

$2 million grant spent on 

the oval at Westminster 

Park instead. 

Councillor Maggio said 

Ryde has acted quickly to 

pass a motion to have synthetic 

turf at Westminster 

Park before the 2020 to 

2021 soccer season and 

that it can be laid down 

within weeks. 

“While Hunters Hill sends 

this grant off to report land 

we have acted,” Clr Maggio 

said. 

“We are not going to be 

tied up with red tape and 

I’ve already written to Mr 

Roberts to tell him we are 

ready to go when he is !” 

The motion to have a staff 

report on the feasibility of 

synthetic turf at Gladesville 

Reserve was introduced 

by Hunters Hill Clr Zac 

Miles as the “appropriate 

procedural responsibility”

despite a move by councillors

to have the report

can because we’ve already 

delivered six synthetic turf 

fields and Hunters Hill has 

failed to deliver any.” 

Hunters Hill Mayor Mark 

Bennett rejected Clr Maggio’s 

claim. 

“What we have done is 

the right thing to do and a 

staff report does need to 

come back to councillors 

because this will impact on 

our budget,” he said. 

“This is also appropriate 

because we haven’t 

been given the grant yet, 

there has only been an announcement 

of it, which of 

course we are delighted 

with.” 

He described Clr Maggio’s 

move as “petulant” 

behaviour. 

“I’ve also heard Lane 

Cove Council might be try 

to take the grant money,” 

Mayor Bennett said. 

“And while I have a lot 

of respect for Councillor 

Maggio, he is being petulant 

on this,” he said. 

City of Ryde Mayor Jerome 

Laxale said he would 

be happy to take the $2 

million grant if Clr Maggio 

can convince Mr Roberts 

to spend it in Ryde. 

“What I would like to see 

is a two million grant for 

Ryde as well as a two million 

grant for Hunters Hill,” 

he said. 

“If the state government 

can spend tens of millions 

of dollars knocking down 

stadiums and rebuilding 

them I can’t see why 

it can’t spend money on 

sports fields in both our 

municipalities.” 

Should the $2 million 

grant be redirected to 

Ryde it would mean the 

Gladesville Ravens soccer 

club would benefit at the 

expense of the All Saints 

soccer club, which plays at 

Gladesville Reserve. 

“Westminster Park is the 

home ground of the Ravens 

and this ground gets 

flooded in winter so it is 

the perfect site for synthetic 

turf and this is why our 

council has acted quickly 

to already approve synthetic 

turf to go there,” Clr 

Maggio said. 

The environmental concerns 

raised by Hunters 

Hill Clr Ross Williams 

largely relate to the petrochemical 

composition of 

synthetic turf – which he 

says is not biodegradable 

– as well as the limited ten 

year life span of synthetic 

turf. 

Councillor Sanderson is 

concerned that if Hunters 

Hill approves the synthetic 

turf it will be hit with the 

further cost of dealing with 

it when the ten year term 

expires. 

But Clr Maggio regards 

these concerns as “absurd”. 

“There are no environmental 

issues with synthetic 

turf and sure, it can 

be vandalised, but to suggest 

it could be toxic is just 

absurd,” he said. 

“I agree it has a life span 

of 10 to 15 years but the 

money a council will save 

with synthetic turf against 

the costs of outdoor staff 

maintaining an existing 

pitch more than offsets the 

cost of eventually replacing 

it.” 

Mr Roberts declined to 

comment until the Hunters 

Hill staff report is handed 

down.

There will also be school 

holiday sports clinics held 

at the Ryde Aquatic Leisure 

Centre, in addition to our very 

popular Holiday Intensive 

Swim Program, where 

children rapidly develop 

their skills and confidence by 

taking swimming lessons on 

consecutive days. There will 

also be a wave pool and giant 

slide operating throughout 

the holidays. Best of all, the 

water’s a lovely 29 degrees 

year-round!

Anthony Roberts breaks the ‘bad news’ 

Liberal Party supporters at the North Ryde 

RSL Club victory party for Anthony Roberts MP 

were stunned when he interrupted tally room 

results with a shock announcement. 

“I’m afraid I have some bad news,” he said. 

“Bad news, that is, for the Labor Party!” 

Mr Roberts said Saturday’s victory had convincingly 

returned the government with a drop 

in the Labor vote and had vindicated the government’s 

policy and track record of delivering 

jobs and infrastructure. 

“I’m thrilled to be returned as the Member for 

Lane Cove and thank my wife Alicia, my family, 

my supporters and my community,” he said. 

“The election result in Lane Cove especially 

recognises the work I’ve done at a grassroots 

level in our community. 

“It is a privilege to be a member of parliament 

and I am humbled by the support I received and 

I will continue to work hard for the people of 

Lane Cove and New South Wales.”

Quinn puts Roberts on notice 

Independent candidate for Lane Cove Richard 

Quinn said sitting MP Anthony Roberts needs to do 

more in the electorate, more often to stop the slump in 

his primary vote. 

Mr Quinn covered his $20,000 election expenses with more 

than 5,000 votes in a last minute campaign and stressed that Mr 

Robert’s primary vote had slumped from 66 per cent in 2011 to 

57 per cent in 2015 and is now at a record low 52 per cent. 

He contrasted Mr Robert’s result with the result for hard working 

Drummoyne MP John Sidoti who has increased his primary 

vote from 52 per cent to 66 per cent in the same period. 

“The electorate has sent Mr Roberts a message that it needs to 

see more of him, more often, not just in the few months before 

an election, ” Mr Quinn said. 

The Independent candidate said he had achieved his two goals 

of covering his costs and reducing Mr Robert’s vote to around 

50 per cent. 

He said he intends to refer “misleading” printed election material 

put out by the Liberal Party to NSW Electoral Commission.

Meriton launches legal action against 

Premier Berejiklian and govt agencies 

AUSTRALIA’S largest residential developer, Meriton, is taking legal action 

against the NSW Premier and other government agencies over preelection 

interference with its planning proposal for 112 Talavera Road, 

Macquarie Park. 

Meriton is seeking a 

declaration and orders 

to compel the NSW Department 

of Planning to 

undertake its public duty 

and make a Local Environmental 

Plan increasing 

the floor space ratio and 

height control applicable 

to its site under the government’s 

own planning 

policies. 

While Premier Gladys 

Berejiklian has responded 

by calling on Meriton to 

“bring it on” and characterising 

her role as 

defender of Ryde’s residents 

against a billionaire 

developer, there are 

legitimate questions to 

be answered over alleged 

political interference with 

the process. 

Meriton, established 

more than 55 years ago in 

TWT Territory, has met the 

requirements of a process 

mandated by the NSW 

Liberal Government and 

its agencies, spanning 

several years and compliant 

with the applicable 

Greater Sydney Commission 

(GSC) regional plan. 

Meriton believes recent 

measures by the Premier 

appeared driven by state 

election campaigning, 

disregarding extensive 

community consultation, 

planning processes and 

approval of Meriton’s proposal 

by the GSC under 

its relevant regional plan 

last March. 

“Meriton’s proposal has 

already been approved 

by the government’s bodies,” 

Meriton chief Harry 

Triguboff AO said in a 

statement. 

“It has been recognised 

as being entirely consistent 

with all of the government’s 

publicly stated 

planning strategies and 

policies. 

“Those policies should 

not suddenly change because 

the seat of Ryde 

is in contention at the 

upcoming election. They 

can’t move the goalposts 

like that. These developments 

take years to plan 

and build.” 

He said the building 

and construction indus-try 

needed certainty “the rules 

at the start of the process 

are going to be the same at 

the end”. 

A Summons was filed 

this month in the Land 

and Environment Court 

of NSW against four respondents 

- the Premier of 

NSW; the Minister for 

Planning; Secretary for 

the Department of Planning 

& Environment and 

the Greater Sydney Commission. 

Questions over “assurance 

review” concept 

“An issue in the case will 

be the function of an 

‘assurance report’ ordered 

by the Premier in 

late-2018 and whether 

that review can have any 

impact on a planning proposal 

as well-advanced 

as Meriton’s,” the company’s 

general counsel, 

Joseph Callaghan, said. 

“Meriton’s planning proposal 

was lodged in May 

2017 and had already 

been endorsed by the 

Department of Planning 

on behalf of the Greater 

Sydney Commission before 

the Premier secured 

the Planning Legislation 

Amendment (Greater 

Sydney Commission) Act 

2018.” 

The amendment introduced 

the concept of an 

“assurance report” for 

the first time, in this case a 

review of Macquarie 

Park’s development plans 

within the “Macquarie 

Park investigation area”, 

according to GSC advertisements 

to announce 

community consultation 

plans.

was introduced after the 

October amendment effectively 

enabled changes 

to be made to the GSC’s 

finalised regional plans

Weekly Times found the 

“Macquarie Park Investigation 

Area” excluded 

the site for Meriton’s proposed 

development. 

Despite this, Mr 

Triguboff said an inter-im 

report released last 

week by the GSC not 

only agreed to continue 

a freeze on new proposals 

in the area but also a 

retrospective “pause” on 

existing proposals for 12 

months, for more studies. 

“It should not be the 

case on proposals like 

ours which is so far advanced 

based on existing 

policies,” he said. 

“There is $78 million 

worth of community 

benefits wrapped up in 

this deal - 27 affordable 

housing units so that essential 

workers can live in 

the area, cash for roads, 

parks and sporting facilities. 

“Not to mention GST, 

stamp duty and employment 

taxes all generated 

by the development.” 

Months of campaigning 

against Meriton’s plans, 

led by Mr Dominello resulted 

in 380 objections 

to the original proposal of 

up to 63 storeys, reduced 

in response to 42 storeys, 

none from affected residential 

neighbours due to 

the site for the proposed 

development. 

In 

comparison, 

there was a reported 

60,000-strong petition of 

objectors to a recent controversy 

over al proposal 

to demolish Macquarie 

Ice Rink.

happened in Ryde during 

the state election is fully

legend Charlie Hobden 

HUNTERS Hill Pirates ended their 2018-19 

City & Suburban Cricket campaign on a sombre 

note following the recent death of club 

legend Charlie Hobden. 

Charlie, an outstanding 

off spinner who served the 

Hillies for nearly 40 years, 

lost a brave battle with 

cancer on March 16 aged 

82. 

The Hunters Hill team 

wore black arm bands for 

their final round match 

against Sydney Uni Vets 

in a mark of respect to 

Charlie, who was the father 

of team skipper and club 

great Andrew Hobden. 

Charlie was the inspiration 

for some of the articles 

in The Weekly Times’ 

To The Point column pre 

season. 

In his final season with 

Hunters Hill Cricket Club 

- while aged in his 70s - 

Charlie topped the bowling 

averages with his magical 

spin bowling. 

He retired from cricket to 

take up running and represented 

Australia in the 

Masters World Championships

record in 2017. 

“Chuckles” will be missed 

but not forgotten by his 

friends and family in the

Five Dock RSL stalwart Norm earns 

NSWRL Volunteer of Year award 

A CASUAL visit to an inner western suburbs park nearly 30 years ago to register three of 

his sons in Junior Rugby League has turned into a rewarding hobby for popular Five Dock 

RSL Junior Rugby League Club stalwart Norm Towells. 

The tireless Dockers official 

was recognised for his outstanding 

service to the game 

last season when he was 

named the NSWRL Gordon 

Lowrie Volunteer of the Year 

and joint winner of the Balmain 

Junior League’s George 

Thompson Memorial Award. 

Norm’s sterling commitment 

to grassroots rugby league over 

29 years through the Five Dock 

club and the wider Balmain District 

JRL earned him the prestigious 

NSWRL award, which was 

selected from the 12 District 

nominees. 

The awards cap a memorable 

2018 for Norm, who was made 

a Life Member of the Balmain 

Junior League earlier in the year. 

He has proved the “heart and 

soul” of the Five Dock rugby 

league fraternity with his passion 

and selfless approach to 

helping develop up and coming 

juniors. 

“This was totally unexpected; 

I have won this acclamation 

for doing what I thought was 

somethingeveryone did,” said 

Mr Towells. 

“I didn’t know anything about 

rugby league until one of my 

sons started playing 29 years

“I love being involved because 

of the lifelong friends you make 

and the influence you can have 

on children and playersthrough 

sport.” 

He was introduced to the code 

back in 1990 when he took eldest 

son David and twins Michael 

and Paul down to Five Dock 

Park to register with the Five 

Dock club. 

“David started in Under 10s 

and the twins in Under 8s and 

I volunteered to take on roles 

as a trainer and team manager,” 

Norm reflected. 

“My other sons Chris and 

Brendon later joined their elder 

brothers in the Five Dock playing 

ranks and I found myself on 

the club’s committee.” 

Brendon would later form a 

potent partnership in the front 

row with a 16 year old Aaron 

Woods at the Leichhardt Juniors 

Rugby League Club. 

Norm was encouraged to participate 

in rugby league by his 

brother-in-law Colin Campbell, 

a former South Sydney Presidents 

Cup and Under 23s forward 

back in 1973. 

“Colin often talked about the 

camaraderie at club level and

the many friendships he formed 

while staying involved with the 

game,” revealed Norm. 

The hard working Towells established 

himself as a trainer 

and team manager before 

serving as the Dockers’ Club 

Treasurer, Vice President, Club 

Patron and in recent years as 

manager of the club’s A Grade 

squad in the Combined Sydney 

competition. 

As well as encouraging the 

club’s junior and senior mens 

teams during the winter months, 

Norm can also be found on 

weekends supporting the Five 

Dock Ladies side. 

“Great Five Dock leaders like 

John Critchley, Joe Dougal ad 

Nick Speranza have been major 

influences on myself and I thank 

them immensely,” said Norm. 

It has been a real family affair 

for Norm and his brood at the 

Five Dock club over the past 29 

years. 

As well as having his five sons 

carve out long careers with the 

Dockers, Norm was joined on 

the panel by daughters Kim 

- the club’s current secretary - 

and Julia, a junior coach. 

He was named joint winner 

of the Balmain Junior League’s 

George Thompson Trophy with

Trodden said the annual 

NSWRL Volunteer of the Year 

Awards night is about celebrating 

and acknowledging the 

hardworking Junior League 

volunteers who have given their 

time, without an expectation of 

reward or recognition, to make 

the 2018 season such a success. 

“It is only with the commitment 

and passion for the game 

of these truly wonderful people 

that Rugby League continues to 

grow and prosper in NSW,” Mr 

Trodden said. 

“The participation figures released 

are testament to that. 

For the first time in five years 

participation in NSWRL competitions 

has increased (up 5.5 

per cent) and retention is above 

the national average, which 

means our volunteers and staff 

are creating a positive environment 

for participants to get involved 

– and stay involved – in 

our game.”

Tigers favourite son Robbie Farah was at his brilliant best on Sunday when 

he masterminded the demolition of the Kiwis at Cameltown in sensational 

style to set the Tigers on top of the NRL Premiership table. 

In addition he earned himself a clear number one position on 

top of the Dally M Medal Ladder ahead of the Bunnies Sam Burgess 

and Adam Reynolds and placings on top tryscorers and top
