Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts recently promised the two million dollars for a synthetic turf soccer field at Gladesville Reserve, which prompted environmental concerns from independent councillors Ross Williams and Jim Sanderson. The two councillors raised their concerns again during Monday night’s council meeting as part of a motion on Whole Of Life Cycle reports prepared by council officers. Councillor Williams has also expressed concerns about the petro-chemical composition of synthetic turf which he warns will “sterilise” the soil and could generate a hot “micro-climate” for junior players. “Is there is a liability for council if a child gets heat stress?” Clr Williams asked. But Liberal Deputy Mayor Ben Collins and Liberal Clr Zac Miles see things differently. “I think this is pre-emptive motion at best and at worst an attempt to hinder this project,” Clr Miles said. The Deputy Mayor agreed. “This is a reactive process to tie a bureaucratic knot in the project so it never happens,” he said.
