In 1962, infrared LEDs emerged in remote control circuits. They were red and low in intensity. More recently, technological improvements have seen LED lighting replace traditional incandescent lighting due to its efficiency. While initially high, the price of LED lighting has come down dramatically and product quality which had varied considerably has improved. “The LED market has stabilised. Some products were pricey yet not always good quality and while cheaper products are still out there, reliable leading brands have emerged making it easier for electricians and home owners to be confident about the quality now available,” says Greg Horton, owner of Juice Electrical. Unlike incandescent light bulbs where power travels through a wire or filament causing the bulb to heat up, with LED bulbs the electrical current passes through a diode with little or no heating effect. LEDs are more energy efficient than halogen, incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. LEDs also light up quicker, using around 7-15 watts of power to 75 for incandescent lighting and LED diodes are less fragile than incandescent bulbs. A quality LED fitting will last considerably longer so is more cost effective. Insulation may also be installed over the top of most quality fittings. This explains why LEDs are now the norm in the majority of new house builds. The light is bright so introducing a degree of softer light and dimmers in areas in the home where one might want to relax, might be considered. While it is better to replace conventional lighting with LED alternatives in an existing home, Greg says homeowners need to be mindful of the difference between a retrofitted LED and a complete LED fitting. “A quality LED fitting should have a life expectancy of around 20 years but a retrofit, where an LED is fitted into a traditional light fitting will have a much shorter life of as little as two to four years,” explains Greg. Upgraded dimmers may also be needed as some will not recognise the low electrical load of an LED. “Consumers need to be wary when purchasing decorative lights as some are marketed as LED when they only take an LED bulb. Ask the salesperson if it is a traditional light fitting which will take an LED bulb or a complete LED fitting. The latter is preferable,” adds Greg. When it comes to garden illumination, LED has been revolutionary with low voltage lighting which does not have to be buried in a 600mm deep trench. LED garden lighting can safely be operated under weed mat, bark and other mulch or even on the surface. To learn more about LED lighting, talk to an electrician or give Greg a call.
