The Delray Beach Open by
VITACOST.Com wrapped up an
exciting 10 days of world class
tennis with a “one for the record
books” Championship Sunday,
February 24, at the Delray Beach
Stadium & Tennis Center.
The Delray Beach stop on the global ATP Tour started with an
ATP Champions Tour event on Presidents’ Day weekend, starring
some of the game’s most decorated players. The event
then transitioned into the headlining ATP 250 event week boasting
a powerful line-up of current top stars in professional tennis.
The ATP Champions Tour matches included Tommy Haas, Tim
Henman, Mikael Pernfors and Wayne Ferreira on Team World and
Fernando Gonzalez, Jesse Levine, Jan-Michael Gambill and Jay Berger
on Team Americas. Team World, led by Haas, won the tournament,
5 matches to 3, and maintained the team title.
The ATP 250 field starred No. 4 ATP Tour ranked Juan Martin del
Potro of Argentina, who made his 2019 season debut in Delray Beach.
It also included ATP sensation Nick Kyrgios, 2018 Champion Frances
Tiafoe, and the Greatest Doubles team of All-Time Bob and Mike Bryan.
Radu Albot of Moldova earned his first ever ATP Tour level trophy,
becoming the first ever from his country to do so. Albot defeated
Daniel Evans of Great Britain 3-6 6-3 7-6(7), in one of the
most compelling singles finals played at the Delray Beach Stadium
& Tennis Center.
When the dust settled after the doubles pairings, it was Bob and
Mike Bryan hoisting a record 117th ATP title after holding off a
strong challenge from Ken and Neal Skupski of Great Britain. The
Bryans’ 7-6(5), 6-4 win gives them their fifth title in seven final appearances
in Delray Beach. This is the duo’s first trophy since Bob’s
hip replacement surgery last summer.
Mentoring Kids
The Delray Beach Open by VITACOST.com launched a partnership
with First Serve, a non-profit organization established in 1993
to enhance the lives of local children. Tournament Director, Mark
Baron, presented the organization with a $50,000 donation during
the ATP Tour Finals on February 24.
First Serve students are taught self-awareness, mindfulness,
compassion and sportsmanship through peer mentoring, sports,
and education. The organization pays, equips and trains high
school seniors to mentor kids from their own communities, thus
further strengthening the communities in which they work.
The partnership organized the inaugural “Tennis Ball and ATP
