interest in this year’s event has
been strong and virtually all
exhibition sites have been sold.
“We have done a lot of work since
last time in terms of gravelling
all the laneways and improving
infrastructure, but the format will
be the same as always.”
Mr Hadfield says the field days
provide huge opportunity for
people in the agricultural industry
to network, meet customers and
view new machinery. reinforcing
the relationship between farmers,
manufacturers, retailers, and
technical experts.
In 2017 the SIAFD organising
committee introduced a lifestyle
section on a trial basis, and its
popularity has led them to expand
it this year with more than 100
lifestyle stalls showcasing a wide
variety of products – from garden
sculptures and outdoor furniture
to jewellery, clothing, art, plants
and food products.
Tractor Pull will be featured this
year, the first time it has been
held at SIAFD since they moved
to Kirwee, with Diesel Tune
NZ sponsoring the event and
providing prizes.

manager Vaughan Coy says the
first two days of the field days will
be practice days and day three will
be the competition day.
“We will have three classes of
competitors – standard, modified
and pre-1985. Already a number
of people have said they will
bring their modified tractors from
different parts of the South Island,
so it should be an exciting event.”
Entry forms are on the Tractorpull
NZ website.
SIAFD runs from Wednesday,
March 27 to Friday, March 29 at
1191 Courtenay Road, Kirwee.
Tickets are $20 per day (children
are free) and can be bought at the
gate.
As a charitable organisation SIAFD
gives back to the community,
providing an annual $2500
scholarship to Lincoln University
and donating $5000 to the Kirwee
Fire Brigade.

Competition will be fierce among the
top fencing contractors.
Fencing
competitions
A series of fencing competitions designed to
showcase competitor’s expertise over four
competitions of diverse fencing installation
aspects will be held on Thursday, March 28 at
SIAFD.
Using a quality range of fencing materials and
fencing tools, some of the South Island’s best
fencing contractors will compete in pairs, with
a winner in each event and an overall Hi Points
placegetting.
The overall winners receive a first place prize
package for an all-expenses-paid trip to
compete in the Fieldays Fencing Competitions
heats, all courtesy of sponsors WIREMARK,

SafeVisit by farmland
Visitors at this month’s South
Island Agricultural Field Days
will get the chance to have a
hands-on experience of the
latest Health and Safety app,
SaveVisit, at Farmlands’ stall in
Kirwee.
The development and
release of SafeVisit is part of a
concerted effort by Farmlands
and FarmIQ to help farmers and
growers improve the safety and
wellbeing of visitors on their
properties.
The app allows visitors or
contractors to book visits, be
properly inducted and see
the hazards before arriving
on the farm. SafeVisit works in
conjunction with Farmlands’

Power Farming will bolster its already popular
6 Series tractor range, with the arrival of a
pair of 4-cylinder workhorses. With maximum
outputs of 126hp and 136hp respectively, with
styling taken from their larger siblings, the
new Deutz Fahr 6130 and 6140DT tractors also
feature a longer wheelbase than the outgoing
5130 models.
Nimble, with tight-turning geometry, the heart
of the tractor is SDF’s own powerplant in the
shape of the FARMotion engine, a 4-cylinder,
3.8 litre layout to Tier 3 emission regs. The

unit is said to offer low fuel consumption,
alongside low engine noise that helps lead to a
favourable operator environment.
Transmission options include a 30F/30R semipowershift
or TTV for the 6130, or a 60F/60R

option offers speed-matching, autopowershifting
and 5 -stage shuttle modulation.
Also, as standard, the clever Stop and GO
function allows the operator to disconnect
the drive by applying the brake pedal, making
it useful for repeated loader operations,
particularly when used with the QuickSteer
system, that reduces the number of turns
required at the steering wheel.
The TTV version offers infinite speed control,
via a new joystick layout taken from the larger
tractors, so should be useful for baling or
planting in the horticultural sector.
Increasing demand for more hydraulic flow
and lift capacity sees the duo fitted with a
CCLS pump offering up to 120 l/minute, 4 rear
remotes with electronic control of flow and
time and 7000kgs lift capacity.

Lincoln meeting
landscape challenges
A new Lincoln University initiative is responding
to the need for new ways of using our land
more productively while ensuring New
Zealand’s future prosperity and enhancing
lives.
For the past 140 years Lincoln University has
always been, and continues to be, focused on
things that matter for New Zealand as it seeks
to unlock the power of the land and grow the
future.
To that end, it is determined to focus in areas of
strategic importance to the country
Lincoln University has initiated a suite of
centres of excellence that will be developed
over the next three years - intersecting
Agriculture, Food, Conservation, Environment,
Tourism, Recreation and Māturanga Māori.
The centres are aligned to addressing
questions representing Lincoln University’s
contribution to a grand challenge confronting
society.
One of the centres is called Designing Future
Productive Landscapes.
Centre lead, Professor Pablo Gregorini, said
production landscapes– te taiao - underpin
cultures and prosperity of societies worldwide.
However, a number of transformations
and pressures are affecting landscapes
here and around the world, diminishing
biodiversity, reducing water and air quality,
and accelerating loss of soil and plant biomass
(amongst other factors).
“Given New Zealand’s economic reliance on
food agricultural production and provenance,
our global brand, prosperity and well-being are
at risk,” he said.
“We want to create adaptive agroecosystems
to re-connect our landscape, our livestock
(agriculture) and ourselves, by restoring broken
linkages among plants, herbivores and humans
with diets that nourish and satiate, as well as
heal our planet,” Professor Gregorini said.
It will involve students working in a ‘living
laboratory’, ‘incubating’ ideas in the classroom
that can be ‘hatched’ in the field.
“Our objective demands a multi-disciplinary
response, integrating skills and knowledge
across farming systems, ecology, landscape
design, social science and other disciplines.”
Partnering in projects with local government,
communities, industry groups and
organizations, iwi and other national
organizations is a key feature of the centres.
Lincoln is again responding to grand
challenges facing New Zealand, as we have
been since in 1878 and will do into the future.
