The fete was a “phenomenal success.” Friends of West Melton Fete committee secretary Hannah Fifield said the event strengthened the links between New pupils the school and the wider West Melton community. “The atmosphere that was created by our learners and teachers, in both the entertainment and running of ‘their’ stalls, and our wider community in helping out, was amazing,” she said. Malvern 48-hour FilmFest Challenge Rolleston students say thanks ROLLESTON College students treated staff to an afternoon tea to show their appreciation for the teachers’ actions during the lockdown after the March 15 terror attack. The afternoon tea was initiated and organised by year 9, 10 and 11 learner leaders from the Hotoke [winter] whanau. “The learners wanted to say thank you and acknowledge the aroha and bravery staff had shown towards the learners in the wake of Friday (March) 15 and also provide a space for staff well-being to be enhanced,” a school spokeswoman said. Teachers received cards with messages of care from several students. “Thank you to Chloe Duff, Ella Jarvis, Jorja Wood, Josh Thomas, Alex Prendergast, Daisey Meyers, Nevaeah Maeder, Bella Newcombe, Katie Knight, and Levi Bowden,” the spokeswoman said. It wasn’t the only thing Rolleston College students were up to last month. The year 11 law and order class visited the Meremere building, home to the Canterbury University Law School. The students were shown the moot room, which is the mock trial room, and were then taken upstairs to learn about New Zealand sentencing legislation. In this workshop, the students were taught how to evaluate the mitigating and aggravating factors of a criminal case. The adventure media class also went on an overnight tramp to Woolshed Creek. Teacher in charge Rob Ferguson said he aim of the trip was to collect media footage to produce an adventure-based media product. Students stepped out of their comfort zones on several occasions in pursuit of adventure, he said. The highlights included exploring the water caves, trekking across narrow tracks and using a swing bridge, Mr Ferguson said. Organisers of the Malvern 48-hour FilmFest Challenge want to remind enthusiastic local filmmakers that creating a short film will take a wee bit of preparation. “Making a 2–6 minute film is immensely satisfying, but it’s also something of a mission”, says organiser, Phil Baldwin, Chair of the Malvern Community Arts Council, local sponsor of the FilmFest Challenge. “There are heaps of things to think of besides gathering your team and equipment, writing the script, assigning roles, and shooting the scenes. Lighting, costumes, sound and music, continuity and editing—these are just some of the aspects of filmmaking that will help your work stand out from the competition”, Mr Baldwin advised. A quick google search of “how to make a short film” will reveal literally millions of tips and tricks for making your own film. April school holidays may be the perfect time for teams to see what they can do in a 48-hour stretch, as all creative activity required to produce an entry in the FilmFest challenge—writing, shooting, editing, audio mixing, and submitting an entry— must occur within the 48 hours of the competition, beginning Friday evening, 12 July 2019 at 7.00pm and ending Sunday, 14 July 2019 at 7.00pm. The completed films will be screened for the filmmakers and the general public at the Darfield Recreation Centre on Saturday, 20 July 2019 at 7.00pm, and prizes will be awarded by a panel of judges.
