Waihora eye top of pool rugby clash
• By Jacob Page
AN EARLY season top of pool
A clash between defending
champions Waihora and
Southern will be the highlight
of round three of the combined
country rugby competition on
Saturday.
Both teams maintained their
unbeaten starts to the season
over the weekend, with Waihora
outlasting Kaiapoi away from
home 21-8, thanks to two tries to
Will Hurst, while Southern ran
rampant in a 64-7 victory over
Ashley at Ashley Lower Grounds.
Springston retained top spot
in pool B with a comfortable
32-16 win against Southbridge at
Springston Domain.
The hosts had the services
of Crusaders loosie Mitchell
Dunshea for the first 40min but
had to fight back to claim the win
after trailing early in the second
half. Springston have had two
bonus point wins to start the
season and share the lead in pool
B with Glenmark-Cheviot, which
made it two from two, easily
accounting for Methven 45-0 at
Cheviot.
Springston will host third place
Rakaia on Saturday in the pick of
the pool B clashes.
Two Ellesmere teams share
the lead in pool C, with Lincoln
and Prebbleton each on 10 points
after contrasting wins. Lincoln
held off Oxford 29-26 for a bonus
point win at Oxford Oval, while
Prebbleton comfortably downed
Saracens at home 36-18, thanks
to 13 points from George Wigley
and two tries each from Cam
Hay and Richard Ferguson.
Darfield remain unbeaten in
Pool A after a dominant second
half display to beat Hornby 62-14
at Darfield Domain.
Hornby took it to them in the
first half and only trailed by a
point at halftime before Darfield
piled on 47 unanswered points in
the final 40min.
Burnham Dunsandel Irwell got
their first win in the same pool
after a 30-10 win over Hampstead
at Dunsandel Domain, thanks
in part to three yellow cards for
Hampstead and a dominant BDI
scrum.
Rolleston are still looking for
their first competition points
after being beaten by Rakaia
24-14 in their pool B encounter
at Rakaia Domain, in spite of two
tries from Max Sheck.
West Melton got their pool
C campaign on track after
winning a tight encounter with
Hurunui 26-24 at West Melton
Domain. The home team were
held scoreless in the first half and
trailed 24-0 at halftime before
four second half tries saw them
snatch an unlikely victory. The
result means Hurunui is the only
team without a win in pool C
after two weeks.
Southbridge will host
Prebbleton in the crossover game
this weekend.
Lincoln Uni’s second half comeback produces ‘thrilling’ win
Jim Doyle reports on how
Lincoln University went at
the weekend
•Lincoln University 34 v Old
Boys 29, Bob Deans
What a game. Two sets of
abrasive young men went at
each other like wildcats. Out of
the spillage came some thrilling
rugby, with nine tries.
Lincoln trailed 7-15 at the
break, and without six players
who were on New Zealand
Universities duty, looked likely
to struggle further.
The Rams struck soon after
half-time through Dom Devine,
who had come on as substitute
hooker. When Sam Gilbert
crossed a few minutes later, the
Rams had the lead.
But they couldn’t keep Old
Boys out of it. Impressive
second-five Lupeti Fihaki
dashed through to score after
65min before reserve hooker
Shilo Klein broke down the left
touch to give Old Boys a bonus
point almost at the death.
Gilbert’s two tries were the
game-breakers. Cullen Grace
created the first, holding the
ball at the back of a steadily
advancing scrum. Twenty
metres out, he broke brilliantly
then fired a long pass to Gilbert
ranging on the left.
In a superb counter-attack,
the ball went from Gilbert to
Fletcher Morgan to substitute
John Borland and back to
Gilbert for the touchdown.
Lincoln University’s Ish
Perkins scored the first try of the
match.
Josh Bokser had a big game
for the Rams, this time at lock.
Ngane Punivai was tightly
marked and he did very well
under pressure to make sure the
Rams were on the front foot.
Lincoln University went down
19-40 to Old Boys in the premier
reserve curtainraiser but earned
kudos for never saying die as the
second half unfolded.
Lincoln University 34 (Sam
Gilbert 2, Ish Perkins, Dom
Devine, James Coull tries;
Gilbert 2 conv, pen; Fletcher
Morgan, conv) beat Old Boys 29
(Jaron Chamberlain, Connor
Collins, Lupeti Fihaki, Shilo
Klein tries; Alex Harford 3 conv,
pen). HT: 7-15. Sin-bin: Gilbert.
