Construction of the $830,000 facility began in May 2018 and was completed in December 2018. District council major projects property manager John Reid said the new Weedons Community Centre will provide a modern facility for the local community as well as the sports groups who regularly use the reserve. “It’s a fit-for-purpose facility that recognises the relatively limited size of the local community, and which will provide the wider Selwyn region with a small boutique facility available for smaller functions,” Mr Reid said. The project has been in the pipeline since 2011 when the first plans were drawn up, said Weedons Reserve Committee chairman Peter Holmes. “With the many challenges we’ve faced along the way, it’s great to see the building finally completed,” Mr Holmes said. The new facility has a multipurpose room, a kitchen and storeroom, 24-hour accessible toilet and two changing rooms. ECan confirmed it has not received the $100 million for commuter rail which Labour pledged before the election. However, Mr Twyford said the Government is still committed to commuter rail. “Our Government is committed to developing transport options in our urban areas by investing nearly $4 billion in public transport, rapid transit and metro rail over the next three years,” he said. Ms Adams said those comments fell short of what was promised to Rolleston. “The South Island keeps missing out in terms of transport spending as Labour focuses only on their pet projects in Auckland,” she said. Mr Twyford disagreed, saying Canterbury does get support. “It’s disappointing that Amy Adams doesn’t seem to remember how transport projects are funded,” he said. “Councils need to propose transport projects to be funded and our Government is investing $176 million in public transport in Canterbury in this three-year period, a 24 per cent increase compared to the previous Government,” he said. But Ms Adams said Mr Twyford is “hiding behind process.” “We are talking about a clear and unequivocal election promise that Labour made that they have not fulfilled. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday April 10 2019 5 Public notified of quarry proposal • By Anan Zaki MORE THAN a year after plans were announced, Fulton Hogan’s quarry proposal near Weedons has finally been publicly notified. Its application for resource consents from both Environment Canterbury and the district council was notified on Saturday. Fulton Hogan applied for a land use consents from ECan to excavate material and Simon Moore Jolene Eagar deposit clean fill from its 170ha site bordered by Curraghs, Dawsons, Jones and Maddisons Rds. It applied for a discharge permit from ECan to discharge contaminants, stormwater and also applied for a water permit to use water for aggregate washing. Fulton Hogan also applied for consents from the district council for land use for gravel extraction and processing. Fulton Hogan is seeking an unlimited duration for all land use consents and 35 years for its discharge permits. The public notification comes about 18 months after Fulton Hogan first announced its intentions to quarry in the area. Weedons quarry opponent Simon Moore said it has been a long wait and the process had taken a toll on residents. “I know people that have taken time off work to prepare for this. And my god, you’ll see it comes out, but I’ve seen some already All new stock MUST GO – the work some people have put in is unbelievable, 100s of hours,” Mr Moore said. Templeton Residents’ Association member Jolene Eagar agreed. Mr Moore said the effect on people is something few people see. “They hear about a quarry going in, they hear about a fight. But they don’t actually realise just how much time, effort and emotion goes into it.” Submissions for the proposed Fulton Hogan quarry close on June 6. •Your local views, p8 Local News Now Fire rages, homes at risk Five taken to hospital after crash • By Anan Zaki FIVE PEOPLE were hurt after a two-car crash near Ladbrooks on Friday. The crash, at the intersection of Ellesmere and Robinsons Rd, happened at about 2.20pm. Police said the crash wasn’t serious, and its serious crash unit would not investigate the incident. The cause of the crash is unclear and the intersection was closed for a period of time after the incident, a police spokeswoman said. A St John Ambulance spokesman said all five injured people were taken to Christchurch Hospital. Three patients had moderate injuries and the remaining two had minor injuries, the spokesman said. A business close to the crash said that it had not heard anything until after the crash had happened.
