northbrooktower.com life & arts the northbrook tower | April 11, 2019 | 31 ‘Rock of Ages Jr.’ sends inspiring message Alexa Burnell Freelance Reporter Wood Oaks Junior High School Students stepped back in time to the 1980s during their recent production “Rock of Ages,” learning that despite the big hair and cassette tapes, the quest to discover oneself and stand up for personal beliefs, is just as relevant today as it was then. Director Jamie Trow explained how the production was selected because of the upbeat, inspiring and motivating themes, resonating with both young performers and staff alike. “There were many reasons that ‘Rock of Ages’ appealed to us,” Trow said. “First and foremost, our beloved Music Director, Tammy Gould, is retiring and songs that are found within the production like, ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ are among her favorites. “This production is a tribute to her and all she’s done for our students. At the same time, as we explored the plot more carefully, we fell in love with each character; they are all striving to achieve a dream, realizing that with the right mindset and the willingness to receive help from others, they achieve what they set out to accomplish. “This is such a motivating and inspiring message to send to our junior high performers and the entire student body.” Along with the inspiring plot came life-lessons learned off the stage as well. “Rock of Ages” was one of the largest casts, attracting 41 students. The school’s no-cut philosophy, means that everyone has a role – either on stage as a performer, or behind the scenes as a member of stage crew. “I want every student who wished to be part of the production to have a role, which is why there are no cuts; I saw firsthand the benefit of this decision,” Trow said. “When we first began, the students grouped themselves according to age, sitting only with those they knew. But, that quickly changed; everyone took ownership of their part, happy to collaborate with students they didn’t know in order to create great art. “It didn’t take long for this group to become very close. In the end, they bonded over the desire to make ‘Rock of Ages’ a memorable production; they achieved that goal, collectively.” Eighth-grade student Hannah Dalinka portrayed Lonny Barnett — a narrator and rock music venue manager who helps aspiring musicians achieve their dreams. Dalinka explained that her involvement in the school production opened her eyes about the 1980s, while having one of the best performance experiences of her life. “Before ‘Rock of Ages’ I probably had a lot of misconceptions about the 1980s; now I love the era,” she said. “The music is so fun and it seemed to be a simpler time. For example, when the main characters decide they like each other, they just say it face to face — no texting, no chance to send a mixed message. It seemed a lot easier. “I also loved how the characters were all so passionate about becoming successful musicians. I feel the character’s journeys motivated us as actors to have the same passion. This group worked so hard and we all realized how important each role is to another — everyone had each other’s back. I ended up falling in love with songs from Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, and I know our parents, most who grew up in the 1980s, loved the great songs too.” For Leah Popovskiy, also an eighth-grade student, who played Dennis Dupree, the owner of the Dupree Club in jeopardy of being shut down, the music only further enhanced the theme to never give up on one’s dream. “The experience both on and off the stage was so inspiring,” Popovskiy said. “This is one of the best casts I’ve ever worked with — we all became very close and supported one another entirely. My favorite part comes at the very end when we all sing, ‘Don’t Stop Believing.’ We sing directly to the audience, hoping to inspire them to never give up on their dreams either. The whole performance is unlike others I’ve participated in before. The show is interactive, making the audience feel like they are right back in the 1980s, chasing their dreams too.” RIGHT: Conor Lynch, a sixth-grader at Wood Oaks, performs during the play.
