Photo Submitted Field Wind Ensemble receives perfect score at Illinois contest Submitted by District 31 The Field Middle School Wind Ensemble represented District 31 on March 8 by performing at the Illinois Grade School Music Association District Band Contest held this year at Wilmette Junior High School. At the contest, bands play selections for three judges who rate the ensembles on their technical skill and musicianship. For the 10th consecutive year, the Field Wind Ensemble received a perfect score from all three judges. They were the only band at the contest site to receive this honor. The band performed “Jig”, by Pierre LaPlante, “Chorale and Fugue” in F major, by J.S. Bach and “His Honor March”, by Henry Fillmore.

And with years of experience in the industry, Fenton, the restaurant’s general manager, feels providing diners with topnotch service makes all the difference. That’s why Fenton and staff members work to instill a strong sense of community and a customer-first approach. “We definitely go by the motto of treat people how you want to be treated,” Fenton said. “I think there’s not enough of those places around anymore. … The treatment of people is kind of getting lost. And I don’t believe in it being lost, I believe in a staff that cares and treating people like family.” Now 16 years after founder Steven Herzon opened Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar at 1820 Tower Drive inside The Glen Town Center, it’s a spot known to many in the community as Glenview’s neighborhood hangout. “I think we definitely are the neighborhood hangout and a place where everyone comes to meet up or comes after Glenbrook South or Glenbrook North games,” Fenton said. From its plexiglass panels hanging on the ceiling meant to mimic clouds, to its airplane wing-shaped bar, the restaurant stays true to its aviation-based theme throughout both its design and menu. While its name may indicate a restaurant known for its wine and cocktails, Flight’s extensive food menu offers guests a bevy of food options. Fenton said the restaurant’s menu has nearly tripled in size over the last six years, and is now altered roughly every month, with new specials being rolled out and tested before they are officially added to the menu. Approximately 25 percent of offerings can be changed out when an alteration to the menu is made, per Fenton. Fenton always tried to keep some of the restaurant’s longtime staples, like its herb fries, duck mac and cheese, and signature Flight burger as menu constants. Chefs at Flight use high-quality and fresh ingredients in the makings of the menu’s entirety. Fenton said the restaurant tries to be as locally sourced as possible, with many of its baking needs delivered five times a week from Northbrook’s Highland Baking Co. Those headed to Flight for its wine and cocktail offerings surely won’t be disappointed, as it offers a substantial menu for both. Fenton said the alcohol menu features 36 wine offerings by the glass, more than 200 different bottles of wine and nearly 20 signature cocktails. Among some of the specialties are its sage cocktail, its up in smoke Manhattan, the Flight old fashioned and the Mediterrian mule. The restaurant’s drink menu is changed over about twice a year, with more minor adjustments compared to its food menu. Fenton said about 25 percent of the wines are switched out each year. Editors from 22nd Century Media headed to The Glen to test out some of Flight’s food offerings. We started out with diver sea scallops ($18). The gluten-free offering is served with a rainbow swiss chard, bacon, butternut squash and topped with a hazelnut vinaigrette. Fenton said the dish is made with the highest-grade scallops. We next tested out the signature Flight Burger ($15.95). The half-pound burger is made with Meyer ranch beef, topped with sugar-cured bacon, aged white cheddar, red wine onions and served with beer-battered fries and a side of truffle aioli sauce. The hearty burger offering was full of taste and certainly will satisfy the taste buds of most burgerlovers. Those looking for chicken offerings also have plenty of options at Flight. We sampled its chicken francaise ($20) dish, which featured a Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar’s chicken francaise ($20) dish features a pan-seared chicken breast served with roasted potatoes, French green beans and topped with a lemon-garlic pan jus. Flight Wine Bar and Restaurant offers several flatbread options, all of which can be prepared gluten free.
