Sumner cricket wrap-up Sumner cricket club captain Dan Vann wraps up the cricket season SO THAT’S it for the 2018/19 season. It has been another enjoyable and successful season in a number of ways. It has been awesome to welcome so many new players to the club and they have slotted in very well. •The first XI (championship): The first XI had a mixed season, many personal milestones and achievements and lots of growth from young players. Unfortunately, lack of consistency and being on the wrong side of many tight matches meant they finished mid to lower table. Tom Davie, our overseas player from England, has been outstanding with the bat scoring more than 500 runs, including a maiden 100. Michael Newton-Vesty had an impressive first half of the season with the bat, averaging more than 50 before Christmas. George Moore, who we sadly lost after Christmas due to a new job, was the rock of our batting and scored close to 400 runs in half a season, including a maiden century for Sumner. After Christmas, Brett Taylor had a huge surge in runs scoring a tonne and two fifties in three weeks. Jonny Percasky was again the leading wicket-taker with more than 40, including an SPORT impressive 6-53 on the last day. Dan Vann closely followed and also took career best figures of 6-6. We look forward to seeing how the younger players develop and perform next season. •The Mighty (division three): Another outstanding season from The Mighty. Consistent performances meant they were the top side in the league and took out the major trophy at the end of the round-robin. A slip-up in the final meant they finished second in the minor trophy. Josh Hurrell again cleaned up with the ball, taking more than 50 wickets, including a 7-9; Simon Turner led the run-scoring closely followed by Regan Cantwell and Jeremy Boyd who both scored tonnes as well. We look forward to another solid season from our most consistent team in the club for some time now. •The Blues (division four): The Blues were largely made up of new players to the club with some stalwarts returning, led by Marcus Thompson after he retired from the first XI. Before Christmas, the Blues were struggling somewhat with only a couple of wins, but a lot of tight losses, mainly due to lack of runs to defend. After Christmas, they saw the return of ex-Sumner first XI player, Todd Burnett, who was a great acquisition and was consistent with bat and ball. Some other players found their feet and wins began to come more often. The competition was extremely close so there was always a hope of sneaking into the finals and they eventually managed to finish third. They then convincingly won their semi by eight wickets and the final by nine wickets. An outstanding result for our newest team. Marcus Thompson was the rock of the Blues batting (463 runs at 38.6) and Simar Kang the enforcer with the ball (42 wickets at 8.9), both leading the comp respectively. Many other players made good contributions throughout. •The Presidents: The Pressies had another great year. They were always there or thereabouts each week, picking up wins far more consistently than last season. Eventually, they finished the round-robin in third, which meant they played a full round against the top four sides and managed to beat a very strong St Albans for the first time. On the last day, if they beat East Shirley they would have shared the silverware but Easts were too strong on the day so they finished third overall. Skipper Paul Russell scored more than 500 runs, closely followed by Ben Yock, who notched up 500. Wickets were shared around with Jashwinder Singh at the top with 20. Heathcote hands out senior and junior awards HEATHCOTE celebrated the end of the cricket season over the weekend at their senior prize-giving. The prize-giving followed the junior event, which was held the previous weekend. Heathcote had 11 senior sides competing this summer. The club’s premier side won promotion to the metro premiership – becoming the first club to do so since the new promotion/relegation system was implemented. Highlights included overseas import Tom Payne taking 52 wickets and scoring 465 runs. Ben Cochrane was the top wicket-taker with 56, while Matt House was the top run-scorer with 700. In the junior ranks, the winner of the John Garry Trophy for most runs over the whole junior club and the Valley Inn Trophy for most wickets in the whole club was Joshua McIlrath with 435 runs and 20 wickets. It was the first time the same junior has won both.
