Plants from memorial garden
continue to disappear

DISAPPOINTED: Our Lady Star of the Sea parish
chairman Michael Hannifin is not happy someone is
stealing the flowers from the memorial garden.

FLOWERS FROM a
memorial garden in
Sumner are continuing to
be stolen.
Our Lady Star of the Sea’s
memorial garden was setup
in September to commemorate
former members
of the church who had
passed away.
Since then several flowers
have been dug up and
stolen overnight.
Sharyn Lane, who helped
set-up the garden, was
shocked to see someone
had stolen their 1.2m protea
only two weeks after the
mosque shootings.
“Here we have this absolute
tragedy, don’t we learn
anything from tragedy in
life? This has been horrible
for people and then some
bugger digs a flower up out
of a memorial garden,” she
said.
Mrs Lane said they could
not afford to keep replacing
the stolen flowers and
was concerned the garden
might die.
“I feel sick about it because
you think they
are going to steal the rest
of plants and there are people
giving us money
in good faith to make
the garden beautiful in
memory of the loved ones
they’ve lost.”

Hannifin had a message for
the thief.
“Bring them back and
there won’t be any repercussions,
we want them
back. Even if they are just
left there in the garden, we
are more than happy to
replant them,” he said.
“It’s just disappointing to
see someone stealing plants
in a supposedly affluent
area.”
