Minimal intervention styles are
growing in popularity as drinkers
appreciate the pure expression of fruit,
intermingled with the winemaker’s
skill. Similarly, there is a growing
interest in natural or wild ferment
wines, which100Proof is excited to
showcase in this edition of
Wine Essentials.
NICK BARLOW
From the oaky, buttery fruit bombs of
the 90’s to the nervy, austere and flinty
expressions of the new Millennium,
winemakers are beginning to nail the middle
ground with Chardonnay: Textural but
delicate, oaked but integrated, terroir driven,
but unique. Listing a number Chardonnays
from the plethora of regional expressions
will add interest and depth to any list.
JESSI GOULD
Imported wines and varietals are being
enjoyed by consumers and with a range
of price points and styles, are more
accessible than ever before. Prosecco,
Pinot Grigio and red varietals such as
Grenache, Tempranillo and Sangiovese are
establishing a strong reputation and offer
a food friendly alternative to some of the
more traditional wine styles.
RYAN AGAR
Melbourne, VIC
Health and wellbeing is a trend
that is here to stay with younger
generations opting for lower ABV wines
as an alternative to the more robust reds
and full bodied whites. This trend affects
the way consumers drink wine and I’m
seeing an increasing trend towards
wine based cocktails and spritz’s.
with a cool climate and chalky,
high mineral soils. Growers are
permitted 7 varietals as part of
the strict governance of the
region, but most Champagne
houses favour Chardonnay, Pinot
Noir and Pinot Meunier.
To produce Champagne’s unique
bubbles, the wine undergoes
secondary fermentation in the
bottle. This is done by adding
a small amount of yeast and
sugar, producing carbon that
becomes trapped within the bottle
Tasting Notes
Grenache has a long history in Australia.
Widely planted in the Mediterranean regions
of Spain and southern France, Grenache
thrives in warm, dry conditions. Suited
perfectly to McLaren Vale and the Barossa
Valley, Grenache plantings were thriving by
the mid 1800’s. These regions are home to
the oldest Grenache vines in the world today.
As we move away from rich, dense, sweet
fruited reds and toward more nuanced,
elegant wines of freshness and balance,
Grenache is poised to take centre stage.
Often referred to as ‘Barossa Pinot’, today’s
Grenache is vibrant, drinkable and exactly
what your customers are looking for.
understood the secrets of making
fine wine. He was the grandson of
pioneering vigneron, Johann Gramp
FERMENT
Wild Yeast Fermentation has been
around as long as the hills in which
they grow, but a resurgence of interest
into this process in winemaking has
become apparent by consumers.
Fermented naturally using the
indigenous yeasts from the vineyard
environment, as well as the winery,
eliminating most of the artificial
processes that can happen in
producing a bottle of wine.
By not inoculating the wine with
cultured yeast to spark fermentation,
the wine can produce a softer, more
complex flavour. It takes a little more
time, but some would say that it is
worth every minute.
