Land commemorates WW1 soldiers
•From page 1
Sports clubs which have been
involved are the Lancaster Park
Cricket Club, Cashmere Technical
Football Club and Sydenham
and Otautahi rugby clubs.
Linwood Ward city councillor
Yani Johanson said the process is
in early stages but he is pushing
to get it under way sooner.
“We need some
sort of concept
plan in place before
demolition is
completed.”
The concept
plan will go
Yani
Johanson
out for public
consultation
before designs
are finalised.
The park’s war memorial gates
will be restored and incorporated
into the new design.
The stadium demolition is
thought to be the country’s biggest.
It involves the removal of
68,000 cu m of material above
ground and about 30,000m3
below ground.
The cost has been revised from
$20 million to $12 million.
Lancaster Park was founded
in 1881 as a home for cricket and
athletics.
It was initially privately
owned, but in 1919 the Victory
REMOVAL: The demolition of earthquake-damanged Lancaster Park is expected to be
completed by the end of the year.
of the Canterbury soldiers
who died in World War 1.
Phillipstown Community Hub
community development worker
MaryAnn Bell said the group is
excited to see what is going to
happen with the park.
“We are so appreciative of the
council’s very inclusive approach
to working with community
groups. We’re also very pleased
to see with the sports group a
general recognition that we can
all work together.”
App to help
report bad
smells
• By Julia Evans
Fire rages, homes at risk
BROMLEY’S ODOUR issues
could soon be solved through
mobile phones.
Environment Canterbury and
the city council have been working
together to investigate the ongoing
issue of bad smells from industrial
activity in the area.
Now ECan has beta-tested an
app, which would let residents
and industries file and respond to
odour complaints in real time.
ECan manager zone delivery
Paul Hulse said the public will be
able to use the app to report how
odour is impacting their environment
and amenity.
“They can advise us where they
were when they smelt the odour,
the intensity of the smell, what it
smelt like and how long the odour
lasted for. They can also see other
reports of odour on a real-time
map,” he said.
But Mr Hulse said the project
was in the very early stage.
A prototype was piloted with
previous complainants to help understand
localised odour issues.
“The app, while promising,
needs further development and
testing before a decision can be
made as to if the solution will be
implemented.”
