Anzac
services
to go
ahead
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
“ANZAC DAY is an absolute
representation of our freedom and
it must go ahead.”
That is the message from former
city councillor Bob Shearing who
has been organising the Anzac
Day service at Hornby Primary
School for about 20 years.
Safety concerns following the
March 15 terror attack led to the
cancellation of some Anzac Day
services, following advice from
police.
Police recently made requests
for smaller services to be cancelled
or consolidated to allow
for police to provide appropriate
support at large gatherings.
But, Mr Shearing said cancelling
the service would have meant
the shooter had won.
“To be told we can’t have
them for the act of some idiot,
it is just absolutely wrong,” Mr
Shearing said. His views have
been backed by past Templeton
Residents’ Association president
and member John Rae, Halswell
Residents’ Association secretary
David Hawke and Greater Hornby
Residents’ Association member
Mark Peters.

DON’T MEDDLE with Anzac Day.
That’s the loud and clear message from
organisers of services in the western suburbs
(see page 1).
Police have asked organisers of Anzac
Day services to consider if they need to go
ahead or if they can be merged.
I can see the reasoning. Police have only so much resource.
Events where there are reasonable amounts of people need to
have a police presence, given the March 15 tragedy.
But it is also good to see some tough talking from those
involved in Anzac Day like Bob Shearing who has been organising
the service at Hornby Primary School for 20 years.
As Bob says cancelling the service would mean the terrorist
had won. And that just wouldn’t be right.

Bid for free swims not likely
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
HORNBY RESIDENTS bid to
have free access to nearby pools,
as a result of the ongoing delays
with the suburb’s mega-centre,
is unlikely to be granted.
Greater Hornby Residents’
Association member Alison
Murray is calling for residents
to be able to swim for free at city
council pools until the Hornby
Library, Customer
Services
and South
West Leisure
Centre is built.
But city
council head
of recreation,
Ross Houliston
sports and
events Nigel
Cox said it
has no plans to provide free
access for Hornby residents to
swimming pools.
“Our priority is having the
new facility open for the growing
south-west community by
late 2022,” he said.
Mrs Murray said she has dealt
with breast cancer and exercise
through swimming was recommended.
But she said the cost of
petrol to travel from Hornby
to Pioneer Recreation & Sport
Centre and Graham Condon
Recreation and Sports Centre
was too high.
The suburb has been without a
city council swimming pool for
about 13 years after it was closed
in 2006 and demolished in 2007.
An indoor pool for the southwest
of the city was first proposed
in the city council’s 2006
Aquatic Facilities Plan.
Mrs Murray’s idea has been
backed by fellow member Mark
Peters, who said it was quite
a novel approach to have free
concession tickets for residents,
given the delays to the Hornby
mega-facility.
“It is more a case of giving
Hornby residents the ability to
have access free of charge due to
the fact they are having to travel
to get there and the inconvenience
of having the cost as well,”
he said.
But not everyone is sure if it
will be a viable option.
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board chairman
Mike Mora said he would like
to see Hornby residents with a
green prescription to be able to
get free access.
A green prescription is written
advice from a health professional
for a person to be active
or improve their diet.
Mr Mora said while he was
unsure whether it will be a
feasible option, he will put the
idea forward to the community
board.
But Mrs Murray said it was
her intention for all Hornby
residents to receive free access
to pools.
The association’s treasurer
COSTS: A
suggestion has
been made for
Hornby residents
to have free
access to city
council swimming
pools until the
Hornby Library,
Customer Services
and South West
Leisure Centre is
built at Kyle Park.
Ross Houliston said he thought
the cost of travelling to Pioneer
and Graham Condon was
comparable to the using some of
the smaller pools near Hornby.
He said he did not think it was
any more expensive for residents
to go to the Canterbury Swim
School in Yaldhurst or Propeller
Swim School in Wigram.
“If they started subsidising
people like that it could lead to
all sorts of problems all over
the city. Other people will be
wanting the same,” he said.
But Mrs Murray said the
Canterbury Swim School’s
pool hours were more limited
and she could get a cheaper
concession at city council pool.
She had not considered
the Propeller Swim School’s
options.

Are you ready

Whether we came here by

toward the same direction/goals?
How can we make Hornby a
great place to live for all of us,
stay connected, get involved and
make use of our built-in environment

What can we create now that
will help the future generations
be proud of Hornby?
This is the big question.
Aspirational yes, achievable –
that’s up to all of us.
So, what do we need to do?
I believe it’s how we choose to
respond, whether we jump in for
the ride or sit in the background
and be left behind.
Change isn’t easy and takes

The Hub Hornby centre

A crowd of about 400 people

It showcased about 10 of the

Parking restrictions mooted
• By Jess Gibson
PARKING restrictions are being
considered on an upmarket
street near Russley Golf Club.
Residents believe vehicles have
only recently started using the
all-day parking on both sides of

close proximity to the airport.
Resident

said he thinks
it is because

When parks
are full, the

becomes
almost as narrow as a single

concerns.
A letter to the Fendalton-

Community Board addressing
the issue was signed by residents
of 17 homes and the golf club.
City council manager
transport operations Steffan
Thomas said staff are now
investigating the issue.
As the entrance to the golf
club is on Stableford Green, the
street is heavily used by vehicles,
including large trucks which
make deliveries to the club and
rubbish trucks.
Cars enter at speed when
they come in from the 60km/h
Memorial Ave.
Resident Shirley O’Leary said
she is amazed at the danger on
her street when vehicles park on
both sides.

Junior

national

• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A JUNIOR council formed in
Halswell to engage young people
in politics has been recognised
at a national community board
conference.
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board won the
executive best practice award for
excellence in engaging with your
community at the New Zealand
Community Boards Conference.
In 2017, city councillor Anne
Galloway established the Halswell
Junior Council, which is made
up of year 5-8 pupils from Seven
Oaks School, Oaklands School
and Aidanfield Christian School.
The project began as a means
to teach young people civics and
participation in local politics.
The junior council has done
a number of projects including
addressing safety outside
Aidanfield School where they have
suggested alternative routes, a
neighbouring park for parents to
park at and creating a walkway to
the school.
They made a deputation to the
board on traffic and safety and ran
a clean-up of Westlake Park.

terrain. The responsible attitude
of dog owners in adhering to this
is paramount, to alleviate the
continuous need for city council
monitoring to ensure this.
Don Robertson - When
my older boy was young, we
used to go to the quarry park
regularly. We’d take him and
his friends around the quarry
rim track, have a picnic and
so on. We also went to several
of the planting days there and
enjoyed seeing the trees we
helped plant growing. Over the
summer I took my youngest
son – a two-year-old – to the

quarry park for a walk around
the quarry rim track and we
were going to have a picnic in
the picnic area. Unfortunately,
we had about a dozen
dogs running up to us
and jumping about us
in the hour or so we
spent there. As soon as
one dog left, another
one came up. As we
gave up and started
heading for home, I
said to one owner that
dogs should be on a lead in that
area of the park. He said nobody
cared what I thought. We haven’t
been back. Irresponsible owners
have always been a problem, but
lately, it has been ridiculous. I
did complain to the city council,
and was told there are only
two animal control officers
covering Christchurch - from
the Waimakariri to
Akaroa - and there was
nothing that could be
done. (Abridged).
Readers respond
to the article
on a resource
application being
made to the city
council to open an eight
cinema complex in Wigram
Margaret Taylor - I would
love to have a cinema at Wigram
as its my local shopping centre, it
certainly would pull the people
in as nothing in Hornby.
Barbara Tyson - I have lived
in Wigram for the past 20-odd
years and have seen so many
changes. It’s great. I totally agree
with the possibility of a cinema
being built. It will also help the
new businesses that have started
up at The Landing.
Nicki Howe - Well as a
resident on The Runway this is
the first we had heard about it.
Do we want an eight cinema
complex? No is my answer to
this, so not all locals are happy
or it seems informed. Eighteen
months ago, we made a massive
decision to sell our family
home of 18 years and move
to the quiet newly developed
area of Wigram. We love the
quaintness of the area, if it was
to be one or two small cinemas
like The Colombo or Hollywood
in Sumner, then yes, okay but
eight, seriously this is not the
area for this, take it back to
Hornby’s main centre, where
the general public have easy
access to this facility. This will
bring more traffic into the area
making the main roads in and
out of The Landing more busy,
idiots speeding up and down
the straight stretches of road,
littering because people who
don’t live here give a damn,
vandals, home robberies will
increase and the list goes on. We
really think the city council and
Ngai Tahu have to think about
the big picture and effect it will
have on the local residents and
not just their pockets. We have
paid premium prices to own
homes in this subdivision with
many covenant restrictions
imposed on us so why should
such a large development be
allowed. Anyway I guess at the
end of the day our say doesn’t
matter, it will happen no matter
what and we will have to live
with it. All be it when we say I
told you so. Saddened if this goes
ahead.
Diane Richardson - What a
great idea, about time.

ADVERTORIAL
Independence in a friendly community
Lorraine stands happily beside her treasured painting, alongside Margaret Stoddart Sales Advisor Michelle Van der Park.
Lorraine Quinn has quality
art works adorning the walls
of her serviced apartment at
Ryman Healthcare’s Margaret
Stoddart Retirement Village
and loves the spaces both
within her home and in the
village grounds.
The art is very tting
with the Margaret Stoddart
village, given that the village
namesake was a well-known
water colourist and painter.
Lorraine moved to Margaret
Stoddart in December 2018
and loves the fact the village
is within a short distance of
Hagley Park and its walks.
Lorraine and other residents
make good use of the village
facilities, which include a bar,
dining room and hair salon.
The boutique village is close
to the many amenities that
Riccarton and the central city
provide. To balance this, on
Bartlett Street it is tucked away
from the hustle and bustle of
city life.
The village provides
independent living in
townhouses, assisted living in
serviced apartments, and the
very best of resthome care.
Lorraine’s rst contact was
when both her parents moved
to Margaret Stoddart in the
early 2000s.
She says it retains a strong
community of friendly staff
and residents. She has known
some of the residents since her
school years and others were
with her at her previous village.
She still has a wide network of
friends outside the village.
Lorraine likes to visit her
daughter and son-in-law
at their home once a week.
She also goes further aeld,
visiting a friend at Tahunanui
in Nelson at least two times
a year.
Lorraine likes the security
and feeling of home her
serviced apartment offers.
She has direct access to both
the inside of the village and
out into an inner courtyard
that features the lovely
village gardens.
The staff have been
accommodating in terms of
her meals as she is often “out
and about” during the day, and
thus happy that the kitchen
can give her an option to eat
later in the evening. She likes
to drive to her daughter’s
place for a family meal every
Sunday and to keep in contact
with other members of her
family in Christchurch. She
also plans to use the bus
for quick trips into the city,
given there is a bus stop near
to the village gates. There
are also transport services
available at the village for
resident outings.
The art displayed in
Lorraine’s home is not only
beautiful but also reminds
her of the time she ran an
art gallery in Akaroa. She is
even featured in a Christine
King painting from 1994. The
scene reects a French festival
in Akaroa.
But the work she is most
proud to have purchased is
a commissioned work of the
Ōnawe Peninsula, located near
Duvauchelle. The beautiful
Banks Peninsula painting is by
Nathanael Provis.
Lorraine originally ordered
the work to enable her to give
it to a charity ball auction on
behalf of Akaroa Hospital.
About halfway through the
auction she changed her mind
and bought it back herself.
“When I got in here (to
Margaret Stoddart) I was
mindful of the painting. That
wall is the absolute perfect
place for it.”
Michelle Van der Park says
the village is conveniently
located close to Hagley Park,
Riccarton Mall and the city.
The serviced apartments
provide the option for those
who would like to remain
independent yet would benet
from some help with meals
and housekeeping.

This stylish contemporary home is
simply outstanding in its design and its

Lyttleton and beyond, you will never tire of
the constantly changing scene unfolding in
front of you.
Set over different levels giving a feeling of
