SOUTHERN VIEW Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday [Edition April 30 datE] 2019 13 5 New retailers deliver diversity and style The Hub Hornby offers an extensive selection of retail and service businesses, and the last 12 months have seen a number of new retailers join The Hub family. The fashion offering has seen especially large growth with Merric, Bras’n Things and Ziera Shoes all opening new stores at The Hub. The fashion accessory offering has also increased, with Lovisa proving especially popular, along with Glamlette Jewellery where they have a wide range of ethnic jewellery including bold statement pieces and everyday items. The Hub’s fashion stylist, Vicki McMillan creates the looks featured on the mannequins outside Michael Hill, drawing together items from different retailers in unique ways to show how items can be mixed and matched. Vicki also offers personalised styling and shopping sessions for those customers that would like some expert advice as to what fashion would work best for them. On Thursday, April 11, The Hub held its very first Fashion Forecast show. Featuring a 24-metre-long runway, the show featured upcoming autumn and winter fashions showcased from The Hub’s retailers, and modelled by friends and family to demonstrate real clothing on real people. The evening was a huge success and also featured the winners of the Proud to Be…promotion, which saw six locals receive full makeovers. The winners were: June Foster Campbell, a proud Hornby resident, who serves the community in both a professional and voluntary capacity. Described as firm but fair, she is widely known in the community as Aunty June. Matt Voice, husband and stepfather to four-year-old Maddison. Matt runs a non-profit organisation, Primortal, which provides calisthenic fitness classes at The Base in Waterloo Road. Mandy Wilson, wife and mother of four. An immigrant to New Zealand as a young child with no English, Mandy is now studying to be a teacher, while helping her husband in his business and running the household. Glenda Harris, grandmother with full custody of her blind, autistic 12-year-old grandson. Glenda has terminal cancer, and is in constant pain, but never complains. Her days are spent caring for her grandson, and attending medical appointments with him, as well as supporting family and friends when needed. Sheavoynne Mouat, mother of six and mother figure to all who need it. Sheavoynne founded the netball club Revelations to support young Maori to fulfill their netball and touch dreams. Her door is always open to anyone who needs a place to stay or a shoulder to cry on. Nicola Asmussen, blind competitive runner and Volunteer of the Year for the Achilles charity, which organises guides for athletes with disabilities. Nicola runs the Christchurch chapter of Achilles, is a mentor for the Blind Foundation, and is always ready to help out when someone needs it. P lenty on offer for club members to enjoy While there is still some demolition activity happening at the Hornby Working Men’s Club, it’s “business as usual”, says general manager Paul Inwood. “We have been having a number of promotions over recent weeks for our members and visitors, and they are still going on,” Paul says. On Monday and Tuesday nights it’s Steak Night at the Club Café, with steak, eggs, chips and a side salad for just $20. This is available from 5pm-7.30pm on both nights. Mid-week meal deals are available from 12pm-2pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the Club Café. For just $12, you can enjoy Roast of the Day with vegetables, or Fish of the Day with chips and salad. For another $5 you can finish with a delicious dessert. Members are invited to bring a guest. On Mother’s Day, Sunday May 12, the club will have two dining offerings – a buffet lunch from 12pm-2pm and dinner from 5pm-8pm with live entertainment. Bookings are essential for these. “We understand the demolition is causing some disruption, but we want to look after our regulars,” Paul says, “and we also welcome new members. “On the first Sunday of each month we are running a buffet dinner upstairs in the Sports Hall and the Café is continuing to operate as normal, so our members can continue to use those until the new facilities are completed,” he says. “The redeveloped club will be a multifunctional facility where families can spend time in a relaxed environment, with a lot more opportunities for our regulars as well as new members to enjoy the club.” LIVE MUSIC FRIDAY 7PM: IN THE MAIN BAR JO’S KARAOKE SATURDAY 7.30PM: EDDIE SIMON PLAYING ALL YOUR FAVOURITE DANCE TUNES!
