Students from Rolleston School taking part in technology education at Hornby High School.
Specialist teachers key to innovative technology classes
As one of a number of technology education providers
around New Zealand, Hornby High School caters for
students from schools in the surrounding areas that
don’t have the required facilities on site.
Every week, over 500 Year 7 and 8 students from the
client schools – Rolleston School, Templeton School,
West Melton School and St Bernadette’s, as well as
home-schooled students, head to Hornby High School
for technology education.
The classes were transferred to Hornby High’s new
campus at the beginning of this year, and prior to that
were held on the site of the former Branston Intermediate,
principal Robin Sutton says.
“The Hornby Tech Centre staff, who were located at
Branston, are all here now,” Robin says.
However, the key innovation that sets these technology
classes apart from others in New Zealand is that
the students are instructed by specialist teachers
from other areas of the curriculum. Teachers from
the arts and the sciences, including food technology
and hard and soft material technology, integrate their
subjects into the technology curriculum.
“It’s called Connect Class. We started it this year and
it’s still evolving. We will evaluate how it’s working
towards the end of the year, and make adjustments as
necessary,” Robin says.
Learning spaces
For all the students at Hornby High, including those
from client schools, the design of the newly built
school enhances their opportunities to learn, Robin
says.
While the Modern Learning Environment is sometimes
seen in a negative light by those more used to the
traditional mode of classroom teaching, in fact it has a
very positive effect on the students and their learning,
he says.
“There are big benefits with these flexible open
spaces. The architects were conscious of the potential
noise issues and the spaces are designed with that in
mind. The environment is quiet, and the children are
calmer, more focused, and more respectful of each
other and their teachers.
“The quality of the relationships that teachers build
with their students is much greater, and with the
teachers and students not being isolated from each
other in classrooms, this has a motivating effect on
the learners. The space is an enabler for learning.
“The open spaces also enable students from different
levels to work alongside each other, and we see
instances of Tuakana teine – older students helping
younger ones if they need it.”
