WESTERN SOUTHERN NEWS VIEW Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday [Edition April 30 datE] 2019 19 11 What to get on with in May Words & P hotos Rachel Vogan With the hint of frosts nipping at our heels, the last month of autumn is time to get a few things done. It may seem daunting that winter is only a few weeks away, but I suggest you embrace the last days of warmer soil by getting some new vegetables planted out, along with some winter flowering colour. Your bulbs should well and truly be in the ground by now, however they will survive if you have forgotten. Just make sure you plant them deeply in the ground. Vegetables Complete the tidy-up and clean-out of the summer and end of autumn crops. Plenty can go in the ground now; look to leafy greens first, like spinach, kale, silver beet, mustard, mizuna and mibuna, which, planted in May will nourish you in the cooler months. Or you may choose to put up the closed sign on the vege patch. If you do, to save yourself effort next spring, clear the area now and then mulch it with pea straw. Alternatively, you can sow a green-manure crop, which can be left to its own devices to grow until the springtime before being dug into the soil ahead of the next planting season. Leave pumpkins on the vine to ‘harden’ up and cure until after the first frosts. And remember to save seeds of your tastiest ones as these will give you free plants for next year. Frost protection Move pots and planters with tender plants to a warm spot near the house, into the greenhouse, or, in some cases, inside. Alternatively cover them up with frost cloth or old net curtains. Layers of straw or leaves keep the ground warmer for tender plants that hibernate under the ground. Reduce the amount of water now to help plants toughen up going into the cold months ahead. Autumn leaves This valuable source of nutrients will rot down to create leaf litter that will turn into a wonderful soil conditioner. Only collect leaves where absolutely essential. They provide root protection for trees and shrubs and a warm blanket for bulbs and perennials. Don’t leave leaves too long on the lawns, however, or they will kill the grass underneath. Clear them from walkways and drives. Avoid adding too many piles of leaves to the compost heap at once, too. Cyclamen How pretty are these flowering powerhouses right now? It seems fitting that Mother’s Day coincides with them looking their best. I am a huge fan of cyclamen. I love the big open types as much as the miniature ones. Outdoors, the smaller types do the best and indoors you can go for either big or small. The trick to getting the longest flowering period from them is to keep the soil moist but not wet. Do not leave the plants sitting in a saucer of water, they hate it. They like a bright room, but not direct sunlight. Every few weeks, rinse them under the shower to remove any house dust from the foliage. After flowering, and in warmer months, the leaves shrink down and the plant literally goes to sleep for a few months. Don’t panic!
