Parents and Mayor support urgent demand for a pedestrian crossing
at Meadowbank skate park
MEADOWBANK’S new skate, scooter and play space park
has only been opened for a few days but parents have already
warned of the risk of a child been hit by a car while
crossing the road outside it.
Parents told The
Weekly Times there
has been a recent and
significant increase in
parked cars outside
the park on Constitution
Road West -
which may obscure
driver vision – as well
as children running out
across the road.
They have also
raised these concerns
with City of Ryde Mayor,
Clr Jerome Laxale,
who has called on the
state government to
immediately intervene
and build a pedestrian
crossing across the
road, right outside the
main entry gate.
“We have already
seen a large increase
in the amount of foot
traffic in the area and
it is only right that all
steps are taken to
ensure safe access
for all the people that
use this new facility,”
Mayor Laxale told The
Weekly Times.
There is only a pedestrian
refuge at the
preferred crossing site
where a pedestrian
crossing could be installed
within weeks if
the government has a
will to do it.

Services will not approve
the crossing as
the current pedestrian
counts do not reach
the level stipulated under
the RMS approval
guidelines,” Mayor
Laxale said.
Backed by parents,
the Mayor has now
written an urgent letter
to Roads Minister
Andrew Constance
asking him to overrule
the need for the RMS
criteria and provide a
new pedestrian crossing
as a priority project.
He said that without
Mr Constance’s
intervention the process
to obtain the
necessary approvals
for a pedestrian
crossing would take
months.
Parents who spoke
to The Weekly Times
this week said both
the council and the
government appear to
have over-estimated
the number of skate
park user families
parking at the nearby
Eastwood-Ryde
Netball Association
courts and walking
to the skate park and
had under-estimated
the number parking
on Constitution Road
West and on side

advised that the existing
pedestrian refuge
could easily be converted
to a marked
pedestrian crossing
without the loss of
on-street parking,” he
said.
“So I call on Mr Constance
to use his authority
as Roads Minister
to intervene and
ensure residents have
the safest possible access
to this important
community facility.”
Some residents have
also called for the
area to be better sign
posted and the road illuminated
during dark
afternoons throughout
the winter daylight
saving period.
Parents are strongly
advised to hold the
hands of children
when crossing Constitution
Road West and
to warn them against
running onto the road.

Raising
awareness
for lupus
THIS Friday May 10 marks the 17th World Lupus
Day, a global awareness day which serves to unite
people affected by the disease and lupus organisations
around the world for the common purpose of
raising awareness of this disabling and potentially
fatal autoimmune disease.
Lupus Association of NSW
is committed to supporting
the World Lupus Federation
(WLF) to raise awareness
of this disease, educate
the public about the symptoms
and health effects of
lupus and improve the lives
of some 5 million patients.
Currently there is no cure for
Lupus.
