The Weekly TImes - TWT - 8th May 2019

The Weekly Times - TWT - cheekily describes itself as a campaigning, crusading, truth-seeking, death defying, Aussie battler-aligned, one-eyed-Tiger-led news organisation dedicated to Sydney's north west. It's one of the few remaining independently run community newspapers and turns 100 years old in 2021 - so if you want to show your support for independent media, have a quick look at the paper, submit a letter to the editor via its website or like or share one of its posts on social media. The flip book - or digital edition/replica - of the 1st May edition of TWT can be reached here: https://weeklytimes.com.au/the-weekly-times-twt-8th-May-2019/ And the most current edition of TWT is always reachable using this short address: bit.ly/OurTWT

Parents and Mayor support urgent demand for a pedestrian crossing
at Meadowbank skate park
MEADOWBANK’S new skate, scooter and play space park
has only been opened for a few days but parents have already
warned of the risk of a child been hit by a car while
crossing the road outside it.
Parents told The
Weekly Times there
has been a recent and
significant increase in
parked cars outside
the park on Constitution
Road West -
which may obscure
driver vision – as well
as children running out
across the road.
They have also
raised these concerns
with City of Ryde Mayor,
Clr Jerome Laxale,
who has called on the
state government to
immediately intervene
and build a pedestrian
crossing across the
road, right outside the
main entry gate.
“We have already
seen a large increase
in the amount of foot
traffic in the area and
it is only right that all
steps are taken to
ensure safe access
for all the people that
use this new facility,”
Mayor Laxale told The
Weekly Times.
There is only a pedestrian
refuge at the
preferred crossing site
where a pedestrian
crossing could be installed
within weeks if
the government has a
will to do it.
Councillor Roy Maggio
– backed by The
Weekly Times – put
a motion at a council
meeting in August last
year to have the crossing
installed, but state
government bureau-
“Roads and Maritime
Services will not approve
the crossing as
the current pedestrian
counts do not reach
the level stipulated under
the RMS approval
guidelines,” Mayor
Laxale said.
Backed by parents,
the Mayor has now
written an urgent letter
to Roads Minister
Andrew Constance
asking him to overrule
the need for the RMS
criteria and provide a
new pedestrian crossing
as a priority project.
He said that without
Mr Constance’s
intervention the process
to obtain the
necessary approvals
for a pedestrian
crossing would take
months.
Parents who spoke
to The Weekly Times
this week said both
the council and the
government appear to
have over-estimated
the number of skate
park user families
parking at the nearby
Eastwood-Ryde
courts and walking
to the skate park and
had under-estimated
the number parking
on Constitution Road
The Mayor said there
is no reason why a
pedestrian crossing
should take away the
available on-street
parking.
“Council staff have
advised that the existing
pedestrian refuge
could easily be converted
to a marked
pedestrian crossing
without the loss of
on-street parking,” he
said.
“So I call on Mr Constance
to use his authority
as Roads Minister
to intervene and
ensure residents have
the safest possible access
to this important
community facility.”
Some residents have
also called for the
area to be better sign
posted and the road illuminated
during dark
afternoons throughout
the winter daylight
saving period.
Parents are strongly
advised to hold the
when crossing Constitution
to warn them against
running onto the road.
