SAINT KEVIN’S Catholic Church in Eastwood is celebrating a Centenary
this year and Parish Priest Father Martin R Maunsell (pictured
above) reflects on 100 years of Catholic life in this historic parish.
What are the
greatest milestones
in the history of
St. Kevin’s and the
most significant
changes?
Without a doubt
the implementations
of the changing
that happened from
the Second Vatican
Council that ended
in 1965. This event
opened the Church
up to the times and
culture that we are
now living in.
Also, the 23 years
of Fr John Haseler
as Parish Priest
between 1966 until
1989. He ‘enlivened’
the parish in
a way that has not
happened before or
since.
Does St Kevin’s
have a special charism
or devotion?
Not really, it has always
been a parish
that has been strong
and constant in lay
involvement.

POLICE are urging members of the Eastwood community to be
aware of a blessing scam.
“Blessing scams are elaborate frauds that are designed specifically to prey
on elderly Chinese members of our community who maintain strong traditional
cultural beliefs,” Ryde Police said.
“Potential victims are approached on the street by members of the group committing
the fraud, who convince these victims that they can cure an illness, or
an evil spirit is following them and will harm members of their families unless a
blessing ceremony is performed to remove the evil spirit.
“The ceremony requires the victim to place all of their money and valuables in
a bag to be blessed.
“The bag is then given back to the victim, and they are instructed not to open
it for several days or weeks and to not tell family members or the blessing will
not work. “When the bag is finally opened, the valuables are no longer inside,
and the suspects are long gone,” police said.
Ryde Police are encourage people to be aware of the scam and warn friends
and family members about the scam.

is to have more
people involved especially

their teens to the
under 40 age gap.
There is a real challenge
and weakness
in that people of this
age often do not see
the Church as relevant
to them.
