The Weekly TImes - TWT - 8th May 2019
The Weekly Times - TWT - cheekily describes itself as a campaigning, crusading, truth-seeking, death defying, Aussie battler-aligned, one-eyed-Tiger-led news organisation dedicated to Sydney's north west. It's one of the few remaining independently run community newspapers and turns 100 years old in 2021 - so if you want to show your support for independent media, have a quick look at the paper, submit a letter to the editor via its website or like or share one of its posts on social media. The flip book - or digital edition/replica - of the 1st May edition of TWT can be reached here: https://weeklytimes.com.au/the-weekly-times-twt-8th-May-2019/ And the most current edition of TWT is always reachable using this short address: bit.ly/OurTWT

World in state
of evolution
Dear Sir,
My good friend Tony
Ikonomou (letters
TWT May 1, 2019) has
crossed the line of a
“fair go” by dragging
in the migrants from
the Indian subcontinent
into the immigration
debate.
We love reading his one
man crusade via TWT
against immigration of
Asians from a particular
country.
It says more about the
“juicy letter” writer who is
a talented soccer man.
Mr Ikonomou hasn’t
come across the word
“Evolution” when assessing
the changing
geopolitical environment.
The Indians have
brought Tandoori and IT
wizardry into this country.
They are everywhere in
the world excelling in Information
Technology.
World conglomerate
Google knows it well
because their CEO, Mr
Sundar Pichai, is a Chennai
born Indian American.
Sri Lanka where I came
from produces smiley
faces and mouth watering
recipes for curries
that even Indians can’t
match.
So would be the Greek
Souvlaki recipes Tony
prepares.
The world is a body of
different cultures.
Just as cells in our body
keeps moving from place
to place. That’s Evolution.
Vote for whom you
may, but in a democracy
we have to accept the
majority decision.
I am looking forward to
say G’day to Tony tomorrow
Morning!
Thank you JB.
Guide Dogs can
go everywhere
Dear Sir,
Guide Dogs NSW/
ACT’s new Access
All Areas campaign
aims to remind businesses
and the community
that a person
with their Guide Dog
in harness is legally
allowed to enter all
public places.
Public places include,
shops and supermarkets,
cafes and
restaurants, pubs and
clubs, hotels and motels,
hospitals, medical
practices and dental
surgeries.
Guide Dogs can also
travel on all forms of
public transport, as
well as taxis and rideshares,
and planes.
It is an offence to
deny or charge a fee
for the entry of a person
with their Guide
Dog. NSW Police officers
can issue onthe-spot
fines of $165
and penalty notices of
up to $1100 for refusing
entry to a Guide
Dog handler.
While the public
generally do the right
thing, Guide Dog handlers
continue to face
many barriers when
going about their daily
lives.
Being refused entry
can leave Guide Dog
handlers seriously inconvenienced
- arriving
late, missing out
on events completely,
or incurring cancellation/late
fees.
Many handlers tell
us they have changed
their routines or avoid
trouble areas and certain
businesses as a
result of refusals.
On a personal level,
it leaves them feeling
frustrated, angry,
upset and humiliated,
especially when in
groups of friends.
Guide Dogs are not
pets. They are highly
trained to open up the
Who invests most
in Australia?
Dear Sir,
Gentle reader, can
we take Mr I at his
word: “Enough said”?
I fear not. Just to
help with his homework
(he really is slack
at research, don’t you
know?): China ranks
Number 9 (2%) when
it comes to investment
in Australia, just behind
Luxembourg and
The Netherlands.
Mind you, Hong Kong
is at Number 5 with
3.6%. The Big Four*
are: USA (27.5%); UK
(14.7%); Belgium - go
figure (9.3%); Japan
(6.7%)
Mr I and his racist
rants belong to the
“don’t confuse me
with facts, I’ve made
up my mind” school of
“thought.”
In fact, as regular
readers to the TWT’s
letters pages would
know, he ignores evidence
for opinion.
Year 9, good students
of Australian
use of evidence, would
expect him to receive
Voices for Change: Songs
of empowerment and hope
IN 2019 the Joubert
Singers have been singing
together as Hunters
Hill’s community choir
for 26 years.
The Joubert Singers
began in 1993 as a group
of local singers and over
the last quarter century
evolved into a vocal
ensemble attracting
singers and audiences
from Sydney and beyond
to experience the joy of
sharing great music from
around the world and
across the centuries.
The choir took its name
from the brothers Jules
and Didier Joubert, who
established the district
as one of Australia’s
first residential suburbs,
building some of its
most beautiful sandstone
historic edifices, and
serving as its first mayor
and liquor merchant.
The Joubert Singers
Choir has since
interwoven itself into
Hunters Hill’s history,
commissioning and
performing works about
the locality, participating
in its sesquicentenary
celebrations, and in
the protests to save
Hunters Hill from the
recent threatened council
merger.
WITH A focus on
music by the great
choral composers such
as Mozart, the Haydn
brothers, Vivaldi and
Bach, the choir also
celebrates its heritage
with numerous French
choral works including
by Poulenc, Faur, and
Presenting music that
has inspired change
in diverse lands, this
program reminds us of
the power of music to
unite people to achieve a
common goal.
From Verdi to The
Beatles, and songs
from around the world,
you may be surprised
to learn of the many
ways singing has been
harnessed to activate
nations, communities
and at its most elemental,
individuals.
While focusing on
music by the great choral
composers such as
Mozart, Bach and Haydn,
the choir also sings a
wide variety of music
from countries around the
world.
